Warren dove back, rolled on his shoulder, and came up clear, his sword slicing in every direction… With his turned-up nose and pointy ears, Warren Trumbull looks a lot like a pig. Even in a world of evil warlocks and eight-foot cyclops, Warren is an oddball. He gets the worst assignments working for Prince Charming’s Damsel in Distress Rescue Agency: assignments like exterminating a Gorgon—a mean, green, scaly, creature with the power to turn humans to stone. Warren doesn’t want to become a rockhead. But he’ll need all his courage, and surprising secret weapon, to win his wildest battle ever!

Book excerpt: What impoverished young knight would duck a chance to win fame along with beautiful lady bringing rich lands with her hand in marriage? Prince George, that’s who. Stung by previous failures, he’d rather stay home in comfort, but finds himself struggling through forests, crossing deserts, and sailing seas to capture the Unicorn, find a fabled flower, and discover an “Unsung Song.” Accompanied by a headsman, a Seeker, and a wild boy, Prince George battles beasts, Northmen, and bandit armies, not to mention witches, Gypsies, and a diabolical dragon-rider. Will the Prince win Dorinda of Darr? And what of his childhood playmate, Princess Julianna? Does she have plans for him too? Possibly. More of the Prince’s tale is continued in The Black Unicorn.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together a lifetime’s achievement by one of America’s outstanding poets of the twentieth century. Though his earliest poems were published more than sixty years ago, Ben Belitt’s works in sum are likely to strike readers today with the force of unprecedented encounter. A poet of abundance and sometimes carnivalesque riotousness, Belitt also calls to mind the intensity and eruptiveness of Hopkins, the double passion for the infinite and the empirical exemplified by Neruda, and the lustrous word-painting associated with Keatsian Romanticism. But as these diverse predecessors suggest, Belitt is altogether an original, whose derivation is as multiple as his figuration. His concerns range from the appalled enthrallment with violence and disorder to the rage to learn how one can live in chance and confront the mandates of mortality. Scrupulously attentive to place, moving steadily in his works between northern vistas (Vermont, Block Island, New York) and southern (Mexico, Spain, Italy), Belitt is also haunted by a sense of fated displacements and havoc. Many of his best poems are elegiac, and his autobiographical works possess a posthumous air. In “This Scribe, My Hand,” perhaps his greatest poem in this genre, Belitt offers a powerful tribute to Keats while concurrently meditating upon his own forfeits and failures. The startling poèm-en-prose “School of the Soldier,” previously unpublished in book form, is also included. At once poignant in their confrontation of loss and defiant in their insistence upon connection, meaning, and wholeness, Belitt’s poems offer readers a fresh opportunity to discover “the fascination of what is difficult” and distinctive, marvelously rich and achingly human.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explaining change in the behavior of states and other international actors is at the core of the study of international relations. The proficiency with which states respond to changes in the international environment has important consequences for world peace and the world economy as well as domestic politics and well being. One way to understand changes in behavior is to consider whether and how states learn. Key to understanding this is considering how the groups responsible for making decisions learn and make decisions. Andrew Farkas presents an evolutionary theory of how states adjust their foreign policies in response to international changes. Employing both formal models and computer simulations, Farkas explores the relative efficacy of a wide range of alternative strategies for dealing with unanticipated changes in the international environment, and goes a long way toward reconciling the success of rational choice modeling with criticism from psychological studies of decision making. Farkas looks at the way small groups charged with making policy decisions work. He explicitly models the process of search and policy selection. He demonstrates how a group of disparate individuals can act as if it were a unitary rational actor and provides the first endogenous account of when and why groups curtail their search for satisfactory policies. Farkas uses the general model to explore the effects of different institutional designs on the decisionmaking process. This book will be of interest to scholars of international relations, learning models and group processes. Andrew Farkas is Assistant Professor of Political Science, Rutgers University.
