Download or read book Sex Differences written by Yves Christen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few people realize how much science can tell us about the differences between men and women. Yves Christen, provided the first comprehensive overview of research in this area when this classic book was first published in the1990s. He goes beyond simplistic biology is destiny arguments and constructs a convincing case for linking social and biological approaches in order to understand complex differences in behavior.Biologists agree that the sexes differ in brain and body structure. Christen links these differences in cerebral anatomy to differences in behavior and intellect. Taking his readers on a journey through psychology, endocrinology, demography, and many other fields, Christen shows that the biological and the social are not antagonistic. To the contrary, social factors tend to exaggerate the biological rather than neutralize it.This controversial work, Sex Differences, takes on traditional feminism for its refusal to confront the evidence on biologically determined sex differences. Christen argues for a feminism that sees traits common to women in a positive light, in the tradition of such early feminists as Clemence Royer and Margaret Sanger, as well as more contemporary feminist sociobiologists like Sarah Hrdy. We deny sex differences only at the price of scientific truth and our own self-respect.
Book Synopsis Medical Misadventures by : Alistair Fraser-Moodie
Download or read book Medical Misadventures written by Alistair Fraser-Moodie and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: •A memoir looking at the ups and downs of a doctor’s life. •A ‘warts and all’ examination of the NHS through the last 50 years. •The book also looks at the looming crisis in the NHS when the number of doctors will dramatically fall. Alistair Fraser-Moodie believes he was probably born into medicine. His mother was a general practitioner working from home, his father was a surgeon & also a dentist. Following his ‘destiny’ he started training as a doctor. He recalls 5 years at medical school learning very little about medicine, but a lot about girls, alcohol and sport. Now after 54 years as a doctor, and having recently retired, Alistair has written about his personal journey through the highs and lows of the medical profession. Alistair had many different jobs within the NHS and for a while was a plastic surgeon. But in 1978 he was appointed a single-handed emergency casualty consultant in Derby, a position that is now shared between 16 people. He remained there until 2007. During this time he became an expert in ‘Road Traffic Accidents’ and made many court appearances as an Expert Witness. He writes about many of medical misadventures, dilemmas and curious cases that occurred while in the A&E. Alistair also lays bare the medical problems attributable to, and suffered by, the doctors themselves. He looks at the incredible stress that doctors have to suffer. And many of the problems of the health system which have been made worse by government policies. How sick is the NHS? Well read this uncensored account of a lifetime in the NHS which is both true and for adults only. If you read this book cover to cover then you will see why the NHS is in the mess it is in.Only then, he would maintain, can drastic action be taken.

Book excerpt: My father's brother was a boatman; and there was no greater joy for me than when he was with his ship lay here in the port. Then I had no peace at home, but asked if they would let me go to Munde. Oh, what a merry life when I was on the ship, jumping about with the sailors at their work! Not much less was my love and joy of gardening, because my grandfather was also a special garden lover, always took me to his garden, even gave me a small patch of land to own and let me see and learn what gardening was all about. Here I put fruit pits; I transplanted, I grafted and grafted; I watered and tended to my plants.
Book Synopsis Genre, Reception, and Adaptation in the 'Twilight' Series by : Anne Morey
Download or read book Genre, Reception, and Adaptation in the 'Twilight' Series written by Anne Morey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the criticism on Stephenie Meyer's immensely popular 'Twilight' novels has underrated or even disparaged the books while belittling the questionable taste of an audience that many believe is being inculcated with anti-feminist values. Avoiding a repetition of such reductive critiques of the series's purported shortcomings with respect to literary merit and political correctness, this volume adopts a cultural studies framework to explore the range of scholarly concerns awakened by the 'Twilight novels and their filmic adaptations. Contributors examine 'Twilight's debts to its predecessors in young adult, vampire, and romance literature; the problems of cinematic adaptation; issues in fan and critical reception in the United States and Korea; and the relationship between the series and contemporary conceptualizations of feminism, particularly girl culture. Placing the series within a broad tradition of literary history, reception studies, and filmic adaptation, the collection offers scholars the opportunity to engage with the books' importance for studies of popular culture, gender, and young adult literature.

Book Synopsis Essex Boys, The New Generation by : Bernard O'Mahoney
Download or read book Essex Boys, The New Generation written by Bernard O'Mahoney and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-03-04 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1995, three key members of the infamous Essex Boys firm were executed in their Range Rover after being lured to a deserted farm track by the promise of a lucrative drug deal. The police predicted that the void left as a result of the murders would cause a gangland war that would extend across London and much of the south-east. Essex Boys, The New Generation tells the chilling true story of the gang that destroyed everything that stood in their way to take control of their fallen predecessors' drug empire. With a reputation for ruthless violence, the gang expanded and protected their drug-dealing operation with a terrifying combination of bloodshed and intimidation. In February 2001, tensions within their circle boiled over and resulted in one member being shot dead. The police investigation was met with a wall of silence and for three years it seemed as if the case would remain unsolved. A leading member of the gang was eventually charged, but in an unexpected twist he became the prosecution's star witness. While a murder conviction was finally secured, the real truth surrounding the murder and the gang's psychotic crimes has never been revealed. Now, for the first time, former Essex Boys member Bernard O'Mahoney tells the full, extraordinary story of the rise and fall of the gang that took over the Essex underworld from him and his associates.
