Download or read book Unprotected written by Oroub El-Abed and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2009 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on personal interviews with Palestinian families, Oroub El-Abed examines the effects of displacement and the livelihood strategies that Palestinians have employed while living in Egypt. The author also analyzes the impact of fluctuating Egyptian government policies on the Palestinian way of life. With limited basic human rights and in the context of very poor living conditions for Egyptians in general, Palestinians in Egypt have had to employ an array of both tangible and intangible assets to survive. By providing an account of how they marshalled these assets, this book aims to contribute to the expanding literature on forced migration and the theoretical understanding of the livelihoods of Palestinians in their "host" countries.

Book Synopsis Applied Welfare Economics by : Chris Jones
Download or read book Applied Welfare Economics written by Chris Jones and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-05-05 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Welfare Economics uses important results in the welfare economics literature to extend a conventional Harberger cost-benefit analysis. After reviewing the properties of different welfare measures a conventional welfare equation is used to evaluate marginal policy changes in a general equilibrium economy with tax distortions. The analysis is extended to accommodate trade and income taxes, time, internationally traded goods, and non-tax distortions, including externalities, non-competitive behaviour, public goods and price quantity controls. The welfare analysis is developed in stages, and where possible is explained using diagrams, to make it more adaptable to the different institutional arrangements encountered in applied work. With this in mind, computable welfare expressions are solved using demand and supply elasticities for each good. The lump-sum transfers used in a conventional analysis to separate welfare effects are carefully examined to identify the role of the marginal social cost of public funds (MCF) in policy evaluation. The main contribution in the book is to separate income effects for marginal policy changes in the shadow value of government revenue, which converts efficiency effects into dollar changes in private surplus. It is a scaling coefficient that makes income effects irrelevant in single (aggregated) consumer economies, and conveniently isolates distributional effects in heterogeneous consumer economies. The decomposition is used to test for Pareto improvements, and to examine the separate but related roles of the shadow value of government revenue and the MCF in applied work.

Download or read book Beyond Marginality? written by Rik van Berkel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume describes and analyses organizations of social security claimants and their position in the field of force of the national welfare state in six European countries: representing a diversity of welfare state regimes. The authors analyse these organizations, and their strengths and weaknesses, from a variety of theoretical perspectives: such as the opportunity structures of welfare states and national political relations, the fragmentation of the social movements of social security claimants along ideological and categorical lines, the (im)possibilities of organizing socially highly marginalized groups etc. The volume also contains an introduction and an epilogue, as well as a chapter dealing with the relations between collective and individual forms of social resistance.
