Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Craig Foster and Ross Frylinck regularly dive together in the awe-inspiring kelp forests off South Africa, without wetsuits or oxygen tanks. Craig had dived this way for years, including alongside the octopus that inspired My Octopus Teacher. In Ross, he found a kindred spirit, someone who also embraced the ancient methods of acclimating his body to frigid waters, but whose eyes had not yet adjusted to the transcendent wonder Craig saw each time they dove. In the heart-wrenching stories that make up this unforgettable book, we swim alongside Ross as he grows from skeptic to student of the underwater wild. And in the revelatory marine science behind the stunning photos, we learn how to track sea hares, cuttlefish, and limpets, and we witness strange new behaviors never before documented in marine biology. We realize that a whole world of wonder, and an innate wildness within us all, emerge anew when we simply observe. "--publisher's website.

Book excerpt: The Water Babes is the book for anyone who ever joined – or ever thought of joining – a group, perhaps for exercising, reading, quizzing, or playing cards. This novel is about ‘The Water Babes’, a group who get together each week for a lesson in aquarobics, a series of light exercises in water. The novel brings together people of different cultural, religious, racial and class backgrounds. The story unfolds over the last day of the class. In the morning we see the group’s final lesson. In the afternoon we see some of them split up and take tea in different parts of town. In the evening we see their farewell party for their instructor, who is about to return home to Australia. Throughout the day we are witness to laughter and tears, and to various incidents and accidents, some amusing, others less so. At the evening party, more than food and drink are shared…We hear confessional surprises and endure outright shocks. All this from just one group of very different people. But are people so very different from each other? The evidence from this slice of life of contemporary Britain is that each of us is not so different or unique as we may think. We learn that apparently different individuals may be connected to other members of their group in more ways than might at first appear. This novel demonstrates the old adage that no man – or woman – is an island. On the contrary, the story shows that we are all in this together. The Water Babes is a story to make you think.

Interview with the Author Q - So, what makes the Golden Threads Trilogy special? A - A handful of readers noticed the science fiction elements very early and speculated that my fantasy elements were stealthy science fiction. I did my job if you have to consider ‘is that possible for science?’ I made this complete series a solid mix of genres. Starting with fantasy and slowly adding in hidden science fiction elements. By the mid-point of the series, the readers enjoy a clear view of both sides of the battle. In this war of wizards and warriors, there are equal elements of fantasy sword & sorcery and science fiction action & adventure. This world has the expected mythical creatures like elves, dragons, orcs and ninjas but with unique twists you will enjoy. I won’t spoil the story for you. I designed this complete series to keep building and compelling you to turn the page. I’ve made sure there’s never a dull moment. Q - Are these books safe for teens and tweens? A - Absolutely, there is no explicit details or bad words. Adult subjects are there but dealt with in a tween safe way. I made this complete series a fast, fun-ride for adults and teens to live with wizards and warriors! Each of the books has hit the top ten bestsellers list on Kindle for Fantasy and Science Fiction, which isn’t easy. Q - What order should I read the books in? A - Good question. I do not mean these books to be read out of order. I’d recommend the following sequence: Thread Slivers Thread Strands Thread Skein Q - So, why should readers give these books a try? A - Because the Golden Threads Trilogy is a fast, fun-ride that takes you to a wondrous world of wizards and warriors! Each of the books has hit the top ten bestsellers list on Kindle for Fantasy and Science Fiction, which isn’t easy. Book excerpt: This trip through time takes us on a journey from the day to day struggle to survive on a Louisiana farm through his teenage years growing up in prewar New Orleans, a three year tour of duty in the South Pacific during World War II, the postwar search for a new beginning, a forty year career in Radio and Television Broadcasting, and finally, retirement. It is kind of a rags to riches story, running the gamut from abject poverty to traveling the world over, rubbing shoulders with the highest of the high, and the richest of the rich. The Time of My Life is a personal history of one member of The Greatest Generation. That group of Americans who, without coercion and no thought of personal gain except freedom, dropped all tasks at hand, took up arms, fought and won the greatest of all wars, and returned hope and freedom to a chaotic world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK government has committed to reducing the nation’s carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. Buildings currently use almost half of the UK’s generated energy and they are now the focus of an unprecedented drive to cut energy use in our homes, offices, schools, libraries – in fact in almost every building, public or private. Delivering Sustainable Buildings: an industry insider’s view offers peer-to-peer insights and advice from a leading practitioner in this field and brings together in one book an overview of the main issues to consider when creating energy-efficient and sustainable buildings. A resource to dip into for practical advice, which is both highly readable and also backed up by in-depth technical knowledge, giving the important points to note and common pitfalls to avoid. Based on observations of an author with hands-on experience of dealing with the various elements of the building services engineering industry, the book gives a unique insight into the particular challenges faced by designers, project managers, contractors and installers working to deliver lower carbon and sustainable building projects and operation. There is a lot of guidance on sustainable buildings available from reputable sources including BRE, CIBSE, B&ES, ECA and BSRIA. This book is different in that it speaks directly to contractors and practitioners, with practical messages dealing with real on-site challenges, offering practical advice based on experience. Many contractors are now faced with a business choice of offering services related to issues of the energy hierarchy, minimising energy use, providing good building automation and controls and then looking further at microgeneration/renewables. Here they must decide what technologies might be suitable for their businesses, as well as considering what level of training is required before they or their employees can start to work with these technologies. Delivering Sustainable Buildings: an industry insider’s view will help specialist contractors and facilities managers understand sustainable buildings at the strategic level (legislation, finance, training) and then to offer practical advice on various aspects of sustainable buildings (water use, energy-efficient building services, commissioning and keeping the building maintained to optimum performance) to their clients.

Book excerpt: Underwater Research is primarily a review of problems in underwater viewing and hearing and acoustics. The chapters in this book are papers collated from the symposia of the Underwater Association. This book explores the need for the further study of the physiological and psychological reactions of divers. The book also concludes that diving is still the best way in studying the benthic ecology and sunken wrecks and cities. The text is divided into 25 detailed chapters. Most of the topics in the text address the common problems encountered by divers such as in hearing and viewing. Specifically, problems in diver communication, depth estimation, color distinction are some of the topics covered. Other chapters deal with the psychological reactions such as anxiety, narcosis, and visual attention. Also, some chapters tackle solutions and experiments for the improvement of diving techniques and equipment. This reference is helpful to divers, students, and scientists involved in marine and environmental science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instant New York Times bestseller and publishing phenomenon: Marina Keegan’s posthumous collection of award-winning essays and stories “sparkles with talent, humanity, and youth” (O, The Oprah Magazine). Marina Keegan’s star was on the rise when she graduated magna cum laude from Yale in May 2012. She had a play that was to be produced at the New York Fringe Festival and a job waiting for her at The New Yorker. Tragically, five days after graduation, Marina died in a car crash. Marina left behind a rich, deeply expansive trove of writing that, like her title essay, captures the hope, uncertainty, and possibility of her generation. Her short story “Cold Pastoral” was published on NewYorker.com. Her essay “Even Artichokes Have Doubts” was excerpted in the Financial Times, and her book was the focus of a Nicholas Kristof column in The New York Times. Millions of her contemporaries have responded to her work on social media. As Marina wrote: “We can still do anything. We can change our minds. We can start over…We’re so young. We can’t, we MUST not lose this sense of possibility because in the end, it’s all we have.” The Opposite of Loneliness is an unforgettable collection of Marina’s essays and stories that articulates the universal struggle all of us face as we figure out what we aspire to be and how we can harness our talents to impact the world. “How do you mourn the loss of a fiery talent that was barely a tendril before it was snuffed out? Answer: Read this book. A clear-eyed observer of human nature, Keegan could take a clever idea...and make it something beautiful” (People).

Book excerpt: Most people know Ted Danson as the affable bartender Sam Malone in the long-running television series Cheers. But fewer realize that over the course of the past two and a half decades, Danson has tirelessly devoted himself to the cause of heading off a looming global catastrophe—the massive destruction of our planet's oceanic biosystems and the complete collapse of the world's major commercial fisheries. In Oceana, Danson details his journey from joining a modest local protest in the mid-1980s to oppose offshore oil drilling near his Southern California neighborhood to his current status as one of the world's most influential oceanic environmental activists, testifying before congressional committees in Washington, D.C.; addressing the World Trade Organization in Zurich, Switzerland; and helping found Oceana, the largest organization in the world focused solely on ocean conservation. In his incisive, conversational voice, Danson describes what has happened to our oceans in just the past half-century, ranging from the ravages of overfishing and habitat destruction to the devastating effects of ocean acidification and the wasteful horrors of fish farms. Danson also shares the stage of Oceana with some of the world's most respected authorities in the fields of marine science, commercial fishing, and environmental law, as well as with other influential activists. Combining vivid, personal prose with an array of stunning graphics, charts, and photographs, Ocean powerfully illustrates the impending crises and offers solutions that may allow us to avert them, showing you the specific courses of action you can take to become active, responsible stewards of our planet's most precious resource—its oceans.

Book excerpt: This is an intense love story wrapped up in CIA and KGB activities and intrigue. The two main characters, Mollie Sands and Jim Owens, have a long and stormy relationship over the eleven years. Mollie, an Alaskan woman who has to survive more hurt than most people ever expect to. Jim, a former Military Intelligence Officer and finally a CIA operative of much merit. After having hurt each other significantly several times the relationship falls apart for several years. During these years the two of them continue to work together. Jim has several relationships with other women during this time. Mollie has to contend with all that while still loving him. This is a detailed writing about the work they were involved in during the eleven years and all the hurts Mollie endured. It goes deeply into the thinking of some of the characters, revealing their weaknesses and fears as well as some of their strengths. One might ask why a woman would tolerate all that Mollied did and still keep her sanity? And why would she tolerate all the other things he did with other women and not completely dismiss him from her life? And why would she insist he tell her all the details of everything he did, knowing she would suffer tremendously? The amazing thing is that she seems to have kept her sanity while struggling mightly within herself. Happenings brought on by themselves, the KGB, and their own organization, the CIA. There is love; there are assassinations, much intrigue, loneliness, loss of several close friends as the CIA and the KGB battle each other. It is set in Alaska, but takes place in many parts of the world. It is very detailed and is a compelling story, one worthy of much psychological investigation and thought.
