Book excerpt: The use of coal as a fuel source has been decreasing rapidly due to economic and environmental concerns. As a result, it is becoming increasingly important to find alternative uses for this abundant resource for states and countries that have economies that rely heavily on coal. Previous work from our group has shown that treatment of coal with various solvents can convert Wyoming coal into carbon fiber mats for non-thermal applications, such as electrodes for energy storage devices (supercapacitors or batteries). However, there still lacks systematic study on the fate of different streams for one of the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable solvents, formed from choline and l-arginate in water, referred to as [Ch][ARG]. In this work, Wyoming coal from the Powder River Basin was treated with [Ch][ARG], with the coal fragments insoluble in the solvent being referred to as char. The [Ch][ARG] char was carefully characterized and used as precursors for electrospinning. FT-IR and TGA-MS results of the char showed the presence of the [Ch][ARG] used for treatment despite thorough washing and of oxygen containing functional groups. N2 and CO2 physisorption results showed the porosity of the char is located mainly in the sub nanometer region (microporous), with a very low percentage of mesopores (> 2nm). The coal derived carbon fiber mats (CFM) were characterized using FT-IR and scanning electron microscope (SEM) and tested for their potential applications in semipermeable membranes.

Book excerpt: The production of Wyoming coal has been dropping since 2008 due to stringent regulation of coal burning power plants and the low prices of natural gas. To keep the coal industry providing for Wyoming, new uses need to be found for coal that are viable and valuable. Liquid extraction of Wyoming coal to produce valuable products was investigated in this study. Initially, acid-base leaching of coal was used to extract humic acids (HA), a known soil amendment. Further, solvent extraction leaching of Wyoming coal was performed with two polar solvents, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), to extract the polar fraction present in coal. These two extraction procedures were performed on coal from five different sources within Wyoming and Montana. Further, these coals include sub-bituminous coal and lignite. Initial results have shown high yields of extraction products for two of the of the four Wyoming coals. Analysis of these products has proved difficult due to their chemical complexity; however, a variety of analytical methods have been performed to characterize these products and determine their chemical makeup. High yield results of the extraction products are a positive step towards designing a feasible coal extraction process; although, analysis, use, and synthesis of products or feedstocks from these extracts needs to be further investigated.

Book excerpt: This research is sponsored by the Wyoming Carbon Engineering Initiative, a state fundedprogram that seeks to convert Wyoming subbituminous coal into primarily non-fuel higher valuedproducts to revitalize Wyoming’s economy. One focus of this initiative is a proposed continuouscoal extraction pilot plant that will produce cleaner, ash free coal by solvent extraction, a coal toliquids conversion process where the organic matter in coal is dissolved in an organic solvent. This study examined the feasibility of possible post-extraction separation techniques ofcoal in solvent for the proposed pilot plant. Filtration of coal extract in tetralin was analyzed torecommend the filter size for the pilot plant. Bench top toluene and cyclohexane recrystallizationexperiments were performed to examine the effects of solvent and recrystallization temperature onthe split between the soluble and insoluble fraction during extract recrystallization. Tetralin was initially identified as the solvent of choice for the pilot plant. Though it is anexcellent hydrogen donating solvent, tetralin is expensive and presents possible health hazards infinal products. Alternative extraction solvents were examined in this study. Ampoules of coal andvarious solvents were tested at 200, 250, 300, and 350°C using a Teflon lined hydrothermalautoclave and high-pressure stainless-steel tube reactors. The results suggested that phenol andethylene glycol are potential alternative solvents. It was also concluded that treating the coalsample with acid prior to extraction increased the effectiveness of solvent extraction with phenoland tetralin. A variety of analytical methods was used to characterize extracted products.
