Book excerpt: Understanding the Role of Generations in Artisanal Fishing in Ghana Subtitle: Challenges, Choices, and the Pursuit of Sustainable Livelihoods Understanding the Role of Generations in Artisanal Fishing in GhanaBook Description In "Understanding the Role of Generations in Artisanal Fishing in Ghana," the intricate dynamics of artisanal fishing and its impact on both the environment and the livelihoods of the people involved are explored. This comprehensive study delves into the critical issue of declining fisheries and the delicate balance between effort controls and their repercussions on the artisanal Ghanaian fishers. Key Insights1. Balancing Act of Effort Controls Examines the positive and negative effects of effort controls on fishers' livelihoods. Highlights the challenges and consequences when controlling efforts leads to the exclusion of fishers from the declining fishery. 2. Fishers' Willingness to Exit Investigates the factors influencing artisanal Ghanaian fishers' willingness to exit a declining fishery. Explores perceived alternative livelihood options and the reasons behind their choices. 3. Generations in Fishing Identifies "generations in fishing" as a major factor influencing fishers' decisions to exit or remain in the fishery. Discusses the impact of family background and heritage on fishers' commitment to their craft. 4. Effort Reduction Challenges Highlights the study's findings that direct effort reduction may face resistance, with fishers reluctant to exit or likely to return to fishing without proper control measures. 5. Recommendations for Sustainable Solutions Proposes indirect means, particularly addressing the influence of "generations in fishing," to achieve successful effort reduction. Advocates for government support in promoting alternative livelihoods to reduce overdependence on the declining fishery. 6. Promoting Alternative Livelihoods Emphasizes the importance of promoting alternative livelihoods among fishers. Identifies preferred alternative livelihoods based on the fishers' educational background and skill levels. 7. Government Intervention Recommends government support for alternative livelihoods, targeting those forced into the fishery and feeling trapped. Advocates for policies aimed at eliminating or reducing intergenerational transfer of fishing within households. Preface Excerpt One of the major ways to reduce pressure on a declining fishery is through effort controls, which often have both positive and negative effects on the people whose livelihoods depend on the fishery. This study focuses on artisanal Ghanaian fishers in an urbanized and developed area like Tema, examining their willingness to exit a declining fishery and identifying alternative livelihood options. The findings emphasize the significance of addressing "generations in fishing" and promoting alternative livelihoods to achieve sustainable solutions. The study recommends government support and targeted policies to break the cycle of intergenerational fishing dependence. Book Synopsis Increasing the Contribution of Small-scale Fisheries to Poverty Alleviation and Food Security by : Christophe Béné
Download or read book Increasing the Contribution of Small-scale Fisheries to Poverty Alleviation and Food Security written by Christophe Béné and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third and main section of the document discusses ways of increasing the contribution of small-scale fisheries to poverty alleviation and food security through nine main entry points. First, the paper revisits conventional fisheries policies and legislation and makes suggestions on how those can be made more pro-poor. Next, the paper emphasizes the importance of capacity building and highlights how cross-sectoral interventions can greatly improve the livelihoods of fish-dependent communities. The paper then proposes a series of broad pro-poor or pro-small-scale fisheries principles, before discussing in greater detail three of the main management instruments adopted in fisheries: (i) property right approaches; (ii) co-management; and (iii) protected areas. The next two sub-sections discuss markets and how to make them work for the poor, and the important issue of pro-poor financing systems and subsidies.

Book Synopsis Spheres of Transnational Ecoviolence by : Peter Stoett
Download or read book Spheres of Transnational Ecoviolence written by Peter Stoett and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores violence against the environment within the broad scope of transnational environmental crime (TEC): its extent, perpetrators, and responses. TEC has become one of the greatest threats to environmental and human security today, as well as a lucrative enterprise and a mode of life in many regions of the world. Transnational Spheres of Ecoviolence argues that we cannot seriously consider stopping TEC without also promoting environmental (and climate) justice. The spheres covered range from wildlife and plant crime to illegal fisheries to toxic waste and climate crime. These acts of violence against the environment are both localized in terms of event and impact, and globalized in terms of market drivers and internationalized responses. Because it is so often intimately linked to political violence, coerced labor, economic and physical displacement, and development opportunity costs, ecoviolence must be viewed primarily as a human security issue; the fight against it must derive legitimacy from impacts on local communities, and be twinned wth the protection of environmental activists. Reliance on the generosity of distant corporations or the effectiveness of legal structures will not be adequate; and militarized responses may do more harm to human security than good to nature. A transformative approach to transnational ecoviolence is a very complex task affected by the geopolitics of neoliberalism, authoritarian states, rebel factions and extremists, socio-economic patterns, and many other factors. In this challenging text, the authors capture this complexity in digestible form and offer a wide-ranging discussion of commensurate policy recommendations for governments and the general public.

Book Synopsis Improving governance of tenure in fisheries sector in Ghana using the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests and small-scale fisheries guidelines by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Improving governance of tenure in fisheries sector in Ghana using the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests and small-scale fisheries guidelines written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small-scale fishers and their communities highly depend on secure access to fisheries resources and to the beaches that allow fishers to access the fishing grounds, to land their catches, and store and maintain their boats, gear and equipment. Landing sites are also often a place that women use for fish processing and marketing activities. These tenure rights for fishing grounds and landing sites are of crucial importance for the livelihoods of small-scale fishers and for food and nutrition security for fishing communities, and for the coastal population in most countries. Most of the landing sites for small-scale fisheries in Ghana are under increasing demand to use the beaches for other purposes, such as tourism, urban and commercial activities. Small-scale fishers also have major challenges pertaining to their exclusive use of the Inshore Exclusive Zone (IEZ), reserved for the small-scale fishing for small pelagic fish. In recent years there are major conflicts with industrial fleet that are trans-shipping (by)-catches of small pelagic fish to canoes at sea, which are subsequently landed unrecorded in Ghana. In addition, the industrial trawlers are regularly fishing illegally within the IEZ for small pelagic fish. Through the European Union Land Governance Programme support has been provided to develop the capacities of small-scale coastal fishing communities to secure their tenure rights, secure the fish landing and processing sites and reduce the incidence of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Capacities of clam fishery producers was also developed. The aim was to secure and sustain the livelihoods of the small-scale fishers.
