As Latino youth enter colleges and universities, it has become the responsibility and goal of administrators to understand the struggles and promote the educational success of this population. A known factor influencing educational success and degree attainment is academic self-efficacy (Brady-Amoon & Fuertes, 2011). Thus, understanding how academic self-efficacy is developed and influenced holds a key to understanding the educational experience of Latino students. Statement of Problem: Self-efficacy can be developed and influenced through multiple means, including mastery experience, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, and physiological signals. Racial discrimination represents a form of verbal persuasion that holds the potential to negatively influence a student's academic self-efficacy. The purpose of this study was to determine what types of racial discrimination Latino students experience on the college campus and how these discriminatory interactions influence the student's feelings of academic self-efficacy, recognizing gender differences. Methodology: The study used a quantitative method to conduct research on currently enrolled undergraduate Latino and Latina students at a Northern California public university. The study utilized an online survey. A total of 404 students participated in the research. Conclusions and Recommendations: The results of this study revealed three findings. First, Latino students are experiencing racial discrimination on the university campus, most often in the forms of microaggressions. Second, experience with perceived racial discrimination does not appear have a direct relationship with academic self-efficacy for male or female students, but a strong inverse relationship was found between the two variables for students identifying as other than male or female. Future research is needed to further understand the disparity in experiences between students with different gender identifications and to ensure that all students have access to an educational environment that bolsters self-efficacy.

Minority Serving Institutions, specifically Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), serve a unique purpose in educating a targeted demographic, but these institutions are pressed with the need to diversify because of financial and legal demands. With the largest minority population in the United States being Hispanic, understanding how HBCUs can serve this specific sector is necessary to the success of all stakeholders. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of the Hispanic minority population at four-year, public Historically Black Colleges and Universities, specifically related to the Hispanic students' experiences with perceived discrimination. This study utilized a sequential explanatory mixed methods approach. The first quantitative phase consisted of Phinney's (1992) Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure survey; the second qualitative phase included semi-structured phone interviews with 15 randomly selected participants from three HBCUs. Following the data collection, nine specific themes were identified within three specific categories: personal (cultural dexterous and consciousness of ethnicity and cultural differences), social (segregation of peer groups, independent creation of social groups focused on Hispanic culture, assumed ethnicity/questioning of ethnic background, and monocultural [African-American] friend groups), and institutional (lack of representation of Hispanic culture on campus, classroom isolation, and mixed perspectives regarding diversity being included/promoted on campus). An overarching theme of stereotyping was also noted. The MEIM (Phinney, 1992) results suggested that Hispanic students attending HBCUs have high ethnic identity development and high other group orientations, although the relationship of these two factors to the levels of perceived discrimination was undeterminable. The results of the study suggest that HBCUs need to make adjustments on their campuses to better accommodate and serve the growing minority population that they are enrolling. By creating a campus that is culturally sensitive and welcoming to other minority groups, HBCUs will be able to offer to other populations what they already offer for their African-American students- a place where they feel represented, where they feel welcomed, and where they can share their unique cultural customs that contribute to the American melting pot.

Likewise, the authors found that involvement in ethnically segregated student organizations sharpened perceptions of discrimination and aggravated conflict between groups. Latino college students' ethnic identity may be protective against the negative effects of discrimination. Recent studies have documented both positive and negative effects of having strong national identity among minority ethnic group members. The current study examined how Latino adolescents' ethnic and national identities are related to their perceptions of and affective responses to discrimination. We explored the relationships between ethnic and national identity, perceived discrimination, and the amount of stress and type of affective responses following experiences with discrimination in thirty-five Mexican-American students. Ethnic identity was positively correlated to perceptions of discrimination, as predicted. Additionally, ethnic and national identities were also positively related. This finding indicates that future research on this topic may need to consider ethnic and national identities in tandem. Importantly, bicultural youth scored higher on the measure of perceived discrimination than non-bicultural participants.

A theory was proposed that explained how Latina/o students cope with racial discrimination/racial microaggressions at a Hispanic Serving Institution. The results are discussed using a Critical Race Theory lens. Implications and future directions are presented.

Although Latina/as are the largest ethnic minority group in the United States, they attain less education than other racial/ethnic groups (Chapman, Laird, Ifill, & Kewei Ramani, 2011). Racial discrimination is one factor that may account for the lower levels of education attained by this group, and research has indicated that racial discrimination is associated with poor educational outcomes among Latina/a adolescents (Alfaro, Umana-Taylor, Gonzales-Backen, Bamaca, & Zeiders, 2009; DeGarmo & Martinez, 2006). Despite exposure to risk factors such as racial discrimination, resilience theory suggests that some adolescents with assets, such as ethnic identity or coping efficacy, can still thrive, or achieve success (Fergus & Zimmerman, 2005). Ethnic identity and coping efficacy are two protective factors that were hypothesized to buffer Latina/a students' academic outcomes from the negative effects of racial discrimination. Some research suggests that these relationships are significant among male participants, but not among female participants (Umana-Taylor, Wong, Gonzales, & Dumka, 2012). The participants in this study were 446 urban, low-income Latina/a high school students from a large, Midwestern city who completed surveys in both 9th-grade and 10th-grade. Structural equation modeling was used to test the relationships among racial discrimination, ethnic identity, coping efficacy, and academic outcomes. Results supported a protective model of resilience. Specifically, ethnic identity and coping efficacy served as protective factors by buffering the negative effects of perceived racial discrimination on some academic outcomes, including GPA, attendance, and extrinsic motivation. This study filled gaps in the literature by examining the relationships among perceived racial discrimination, ethnic identity, coping efficacy and academic outcomes among urban, low-income Latina/a adolescents over time.

Book excerpt: Past research has established a relationship between perceived racial discrimination (how frequently a discriminatory situation occurs) and psychological distress (e.g., depression and anxiety). The present study aims to contribute a more detailed view of this relationship by (a) examining cognitive appraisal as a moderator of this relationship and (b) measuring psychological distress at explicit and implicit levels of responding. Cognitive appraisal is the way in which an individual defines and evaluates his or her environment. There are several dimensions of cognitive appraisal that are relevant to the perceived discrimination -- psychological distress relationship, including stressfulness, harmfulness, controllability, and ability to cope. Situations perceived as high harm and stress, low control and ability to cope have been found to account for greater psychological distress. Herein, it is argued that frequently recurring discriminatory events that are perceived as relatively benign (i.e., low harm and stress, high control and ability to cope) can also be linked to psychological distress. Therefore, it was predicted that low harm and stress, high control and ability to cope situations would account for greater psychological distress, especially when these situations occur with greater frequency. In addition, it was argued that racial minority group members may not be fully aware of, or willing to self-report, the adverse effects of perceived discrimination. There may be two distinct levels of thoughts and feelings in relation to perceived discrimination: the consciously accessible and controllable (explicit) level and the inaccessible and automatic (implicit) level. Thus, studying psychological distress at the implicit level may provide additional insights into the detrimental impact of racial discrimination. Data were collected from a sample of 152 Latino college students. The frequency of personal experiences of racial discrimination was assessed using the Schedule of Racist Events. Cognitive appraisals were assessed using a series of items designed to measure stressfulness, harmfulness, controllability, and ability to cope. Two Implicit Association Tests were used to measure the extent to which the self was associated with the concepts "depressed" vs. "happy" and "anxious" vs. "calm." Participants also completed parallel explicit measures of depression and anxiety, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies --Depression Scale. In line with previous research, increased frequency of perceived discrimination was related to greater explicit psychological distress (i.e., depression and anxiety). In addition, decreased controllability and ability to cope were related to increased explicit depression. None of the predicted interaction effects of frequency with the cognitive appraisal dimensions reached statistical significance. Furthermore, there were no significant main effects or interactions on the implicit measures of depression and anxiety. This study provides additional evidence for the link between frequency of perceived discrimination and mental health, and suggests that the role of cognitive appraisal in the perceived discrimination -- mental health relationship may be more tenuous that what is typically assumed.

Book excerpt: The current study analyzes the rates at which different racial groups experience identity discordance, or the phenomenon of one's self-ascribed racial identity not being commensurate with external perceptions of one's race. While previous research has documented the possibility of discrepancy between self-ascribed and external classifications of racial identities, few empirical studies have sought to determine which racial groups are most susceptible to experiencing identity discordance or investigated specific mechanisms that may contribute to that discordance. Utilizing the 2006 wave of the Portraits of American Life Study (PALS), the current study investigates the rate of identity discordance for Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians using perceived discrimination, geographic region, and race itself as focal predictors. Results indicate that those that identity as non-white and those that experience discrimination are more susceptible to experiencing identity discordance. Geographic region does not predict identity discordance overall, but is differentially important to rates of discordance for those that identify as Hispanic.
