Book excerpt: Veterans have long-succeeded in higher education, but because available data on contemporary student veteran success has been difficult to uncover, some question the success of this reemerging student population. While data is emerging that suggest student veterans are succeeding in higher education, this study sought to reveal factors that contributed to the success of graduating student veterans in the hopes that these factors can be nurtured in current and future generations of student veterans to help ensure their success as students. Using a new method, the focused life-history narrative, and a conceptual model grounded in nontraditional student theory and Astin's IEO Model, this study suggests that success influencers emerge during the education of veterans, primarily from faculty and staff, but also from peer veterans, that serve to validate the decision to go to college by veterans and thus propels veterans forward to success. Other findings suggest that timely and accurate processing of education benefits serves to improve focus on the academic experience, rather than worrying about tuition and fee payments, enhancing success. Finally, this study suggests that structure and discipline are important to the successful degree attainment of veterans.

The participants for the study included 15 adults who are current or former military servicemembers of 18 years of age or older and have earned a bachelor’s degree from a not-for-profit public or not-for-profit private postsecondary institution. The risks associated with this study were minimal. Precautionary steps were taken to protect the identities of the participants. This study will contribute to the conversations of how undergraduate degree completions by veterans in the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill era are accomplished. Additionally, the concepts revealed by this research led to the development of a framework that may be useful as a path to completion for military veterans and military servicemembers transitioning into academia with the hope of completing a bachelor’s-level degree using veteran education benefits to cover the costs.

Book excerpt: The Post-9/11 GI Bill represents unprecedented federal funding intended to aid veterans in furthering their education and successfully making the transition to the civilian workforce. While widely reported that the student veteran population experiences unique challenges on college campuses that may hinder their degree completion, there is little empirical research on their educational outcomes. Research is especially scarce at the community college level. The purpose of this study was to investigate the variables that influence completion and transfer rates among Post-9/11 student veterans enrolled at a Texas community college. The Bean and Metzner (1985) model of nontraditional student attrition served as the conceptual framework for the study and was adapted to reflect the background and defining variables, academic outcome, and environmental variables relevant to the study’s focus on student veterans and the mission of community colleges. Institutional and National Student Clearinghouse data were used in this study. First, descriptive analysis offered a baseline portrait of student veterans who were successful at completing a certificate/degree or transferring and those who were not. Second, independent measures t-tests and chi-square tests of independence revealed age, at time of enrollment, and first-term cumulative GPA were significantly associated to student veterans who earned a certificate or an associate degree, or transferred to a four-year institution. Next, a logistic regression analysis investigated the predictive nature of these variables to a student veteran’s successful completion or transfer. The overall model was found to be statistically significant, ([chi]2 = 12.117, p = .002, df = 2) and correctly predicted 86.5% of the population’s outcome. Finally, the influence of first-term cumulative GPA prompted a linear regression analysis of its relationship, as a dependent variable, with the remaining independent variables. The results suggested a statistically significant negative relationship between minority racial status and GPA, a statistically significant positive influence for full-time enrollment status, and a statistically significant positive effect for older student veterans on GPA. Recommendations for policy, practice, and future research are addressed in this study.

For institutions that experienced declines in traditional age students due to changing demographics, Post 9/11 veterans are an attractive enrollment target because of guaranteed government funding. Veterans are particularly appealing to private, online institutions as a viable revenue stream. We know that student veterans share many of the same attributes of nontraditional students (Navarre Cleary, M., & Wozniak, K., 2013) but often do not perform as well as their nonveteran counterparts in the areas of academic performance, retention and in bachelor’s degree completion (Cate, Lyon, Schmeling, & Bogue, 2017; Durdella & Kim, 2012). While the amount of research into veteran transitions has increased in the past 10 years, previous studies have often focused on the provision of veteran services or on the mental and physical health issues of combat veterans. Little has been revealed about the lived college experience of Post 9/11 veterans and the difficulties they encounter. Although it has been established that student veterans tend to default to avoidance coping strategies (Romero, Riggs, & Ruggero, 2015), data about the effectiveness of their coping choices and the repercussions on their persistence in college is lacking. More research on veteran college transitions is needed, so this study seeks to address a critical gap in the literature. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to examine the lived experiences, academic challenges, and the coping strategies of Post 9/11 student veterans at a large, Midwestern university.

Knowles (1984) Adult Learning Theory and the concepts of social and academic integration proposed by Bean and Metzner (1985) were used to conceptualize participant experience. I employed a design of Narrative Inquiry with interviews to explore the narratives of nine nontraditional student veterans enrolled in higher education. Five themes emerged from the thematic data analysis: (a) Nontraditional student veterans engage in purposeful pursuits, (b) Nontraditional student veterans experience "Military Gap" in higher education, (c) Institutional policies hinder degree completion for nontraditional student veterans, (d) Nontraditional student veterans are less likely to engage with student support services when perceived as ineffective from prior experience, and (e) Utilize tenets of Adult Learning Theory and Environmental Press as a guide in supporting nontraditional student veterans. These themes illustrate concerns and areas of support services that can be improved to support degree completion for these students. Concluding recommendations address providing supportive policy, programming, and services for nontraditional student veteran assistance in degree completion.

Very few of today's veterans, however, attend our nation's most selective institutions. Military-connected students constitute about 5% of the total college-going population, but make up only 2% or less of the student body at Ivy League and Ivy Plus institutions. The purpose of this narrative study was to understand the experiences of these talented few student veterans, with a focus on undergraduates. The primary research questions were: 1) How do members of the current generation of veterans make the transition from the military to the Ivy League? 2) How are these veterans faring, academically and socially, in what is arguably the most challenging sector of higher education? A series of in-depth interviews with four veterans of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines studying for undergraduate degrees at three different Ivy League schools was undertaken to address these questions. The resulting four biographies were interpreted using Vacchi and Berger's (2014) adaptation of Bronfenbrenner's (1989, 1995) ecological systems theory and from a life course perspective. Findings revealed that the veterans carefully planned their transition from the military to the academy, and eagerly sought and accepted transition support. Academically, the self-discipline learned in the military was most important to the four Ivy League student veterans' success. Social support from other veterans was also important, but to varying degrees. The four student veterans all shared insights gained from their military experience with civilian peers in Ivy League classrooms, though they disclosed their veteran status only selectively in social situations. These exchanges, formal and informal, were mutually beneficial. While some Ivy League institutions are taking steps to attract and better support military-connected students, from a public policy perspective, elite higher education is not doing enough to help close the civil-military gap in American society. To the extent that elite institutions cannot or will not accommodate more veterans as non-traditional undergraduates, a greater focus on ROTC programs could help achieve this goal, as could admitting more family members of long-serving military personnel.

Moreover, it sought to explore how colleges can provide support services that promote a positive and rewarding college experience for student veterans. Three questions guided this research: (a) How do veterans describe their transition from military to civilian life? (b) What stories do Post 9/11 veterans tell about their experiences in higher education? and (c) How do Post 9/11 veterans describe what faculty and staff can do to better serve their needs. To address these questions, a qualitative narrative research design was applied and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 veterans who successfully completed college following military service. Through analysis of the data, five findings revealed that veterans in college have unique needs that need to be addressed. The findings revealed that while veterans face unique needs when entering higher education, they also possess a maturity level that helps them overcome challenges associated with higher education. Findings also revealed that peer-to-peer support is crucial to veterans successfully completing college. As the number of veterans in college continues to increase, so does the need for university administrators to gain a deeper understanding of their issues.

This is troubling given that earning money for college is one of the primary reasons cited for enlisting in the military (Eighmey, 2006; Woodruff, Kelty, & Segal, 2006; Zinger & Cohen, 2010) and the financial resources are available through various VA education programs. This study examined key factors that led post-9/11 veterans to enroll in higher education. A central focus of this study was to identify key factors that explain why a majority of veterans enter two-year and for-profit institutions instead of four-year institutions after leaving active duty. This study used data from the Education Longitudinal Study (ELS) of 2002, which is publicly available through the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). First presented was a descriptive portrait of veterans who did and did not enter college, as well as a description of veterans at two-year, for-profit, and four-year institutions. Second, a logistic regression analysis was used to answer the first research question, which sought to examine factors related to veterans' college enrollment. Finally, a multinomial logistic regression was employed to respond to the second research question, which explored key factors that predict veterans' attendance at two-year and for-profit institutions compared to four-year institutions. The final logistic regression results showed that veterans' educational expectations and the number of friends who planned to enter four-year institutions during high school (peer plans) were the most significant predictors of college enrollment among veterans, even after accounting for gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), highest math taken in high school, and high school urbanicity. The multinomial logistic regression found that, once veterans' demographic characteristics, high school context, and other factors are controlled for, the highest math taken and educational expectations are the best predictors of enrollment into two-year colleges. Moreover, the multinomial logistic regression results shows that veterans' enrollment into for-profit colleges compared to four-year institutions is also best explained by the highest math courses taken in high school, even after accounting for gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), educational expectations, peer plans, and high school urbanicity. These findings have implications for policy development and practice at various levels. Given the lack of empirical research on student veterans, this area also needs further research.
