Book excerpt: The Fifth Chinese Peptide Symposium, hosted by Lanzhou University, was held at Lanzhou, China July 14-17, 1998, with 156 participants, including 30 scientists from abroad, representing nine countries. The four-day conference was both intense and spiritually rewarding. Our goal for CPS-98 was to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge, cooperation and friendship between the international and Chinese scientific communities, and we believe this goal was met. The symposium consisted of 8 sessions with 42 oral and 90 poster presentations, including synthetic methods, molecular diversity and peptide libraries, structure and conformation of peptides and proteins, bioactive peptides, peptide immunology, De Novo design and synthesis of proteins and peptides, ligand-receptor interactions, the chemistry-biology-interface and challenging problems in peptides. The enthusiastic cooperation and excellent contributions were gratifying and the active response of the invited speakers contributed to the success of the symposium. The presentations were of excellent caliber and represented the most current and significant aspects of peptide science. Dr. Kit Lam of the University of Arizona and Dr. Yun-Hua Ye of Peking University were the recipients of “The Cathay Award” sponsored by the H. H. Liu Education Foundation, offered for their seminal contribution in peptide science and the Chinese Peptide Symposium. Four outstanding young scientists were selected by the organizing committee to receive awards sponsored by Haikou Nanhai Pharmaceutical Industry Co. Ltd. (Zhong He Group).

Book excerpt: The Peptides: Analysis, Synthesis, Biology, Volume 7: Conformation in Biology and Drug Design focuses on the analysis of peptides, emphasizing the use of physical methods in peptide conformational analysis and the relationship of conformational properties of peptides to biological properties. This book consists of nine chapters. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of the perspective on the application of physical methods to peptide conformational analysis. The use of circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy to examine the conformational properties of peptides in solution is elaborated in Chapter 2, while the use of fluorescence spectroscopy to examine the special relationships of aromatic side-chain groups to one another is discussed in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4, the use of various theoretical methods to calculate the conformations of peptides is described. The methods used to stimulate peptide conformations and dynamics are outlined in Chapter 5. The last four chapters examine various aspects of the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in peptide conformational analysis. This volume is suitable for biologists, specialists, and researchers interested in peptides and proteins.

Book excerpt: The Eleventh American Peptide Symposium was held on the San Diego campus of the University of California in picturesque La Jolla on July 9-14, 1989. More than 1100 participants from around the world came to attend a scientific program comprised of an assortment of oral presentations, posters and exhibits. Most rewarding to us was the regular attendance at all the scientific sessions by our registered guests despite the beautiful scenery offered by La Jolla and San Diego county. Indeed for all of us, the purpose of the biennial American Peptide Symposium is to try to keep up with a fast evolving and fascinating field. The goal of the proceedings of these meetings is to provide the scientific community unable to attend some or all of the Eleventh American Peptide Symposium with a synopsis of current results in peptide research. Of 65 oral presentations and approximately 390 poster displays, the Program Committee selected 393 articles for publication. A few manuscripts by distinguished invited speakers were unfortunately not received in time to appear in these proceedings. All manuscripts herein were selected on the basis of their originality at the time of presentation and their significance in the development of peptide-related research. As in the past, this Eleventh meeting brought together scientists with a wide range of expertise, which was harnessed to address and solve basic as well as applied scientific problems in broad areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first synthetic peptides were produced a century ago. In the ensuing period, they have developed as valuable research tools that are readily available to all researchers. However, since most researchers do not make their own peptides, they are often unfamiliar with not only the synthetic chemistry but also with important and useful aspects of design, analysis, handling, and applications. This volume is the second edition of a volume that was first published 10 years ago. It is written by experts in the field who provide detailed descriptions as well as practical advice for producing and using synthetic peptides. The various chapters cover peptide design considerations, the synthetic chemistry, the evaluation of the synthetic product, and the modern applications of synthetic peptides. This includes the basic principles of peptide structure, analysis and chain assembly as well as the latest in selective disulfide bond formation, new strategies for the production of large peptides, and sequencing peptides by mass spectrometry. This book was designed with the intent of providing useful information both for the novices to the field as well as more seasoned practitioners. Its contents will help prevent problems commonly encountered and allow scientists to optimize their use of synthetic peptides.

Book excerpt: Solid-binding peptides have been used increasingly as molecular building blocks in nanobiotechnology as they can direct the assembly and functionalisation of a diverse range of materials and have the ability to regulate the synthesis of nanoparticles and complex nanostructures. Nanostructured materials such as β-sheet fibril-forming peptides and α-helical coiled coil systems have displayed many useful properties including stimulus-responsiveness, modularity and multi-functionality, providing potential technological applications in tissue engineering, antimicrobials, drug delivery and nanoscale electronics. The current situation with respect to self-assembling peptides and bioactive matrices for regenerative medicine are reviewed, as well as peptide-target modeling and an examination of future prospects for peptides in these areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tenth American Peptide Symposium was held on the campus of Wash ington University in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 23-28, 1987. More than 750 participants from around the world met to renew acquaintances, make new friends, and feast at the scientific explosion occurring in the field of peptide research. From over 85 oral presentations and 295 poster presentations, the manuscripts which make up this proceedings have been selected in order to present a synopsis of current research. In many ways, this meeting represented a culmination of forces clearly perceptible in the proceedings of previous meetings in which synthetic chemistry, spectroscopy, molecular biology, molecular modeling, and protein chemistry all are blended as needed to focus on interesting scientific problems. As peptides assume an ever increasingly important role in biological phenomena, our domain as peptide chemists has obviously expanded, and we are the richer for it. The session on conformation was highlighted by both predictions ofthree-dimensional structures of proteins (i. e. , interleukin and human growth hormone) as well as determination of solution structures by 2D NMR. A growing interest in peptide mimetics stimulated much interest in reverse turn mimics, nonpeptide antagonists of peptide hormones, and amide bond isosteres. Increased use of unusual amino acids created strong interest in approaches to asymmetric syntheses of amino acids and methodological improvements in peptide synthesis as well as recent advances in purification and characterization methods.
