Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After two decades of reinvention, Japanese companies are re-emerging as major players in the new digital economy. They have responded to the rise of China and new global competition by moving upstream into critical deep-tech inputs and advanced materials and components. This new "aggregate niche strategy" has made Japan the technology anchor for many global supply chains. Although the end products do not carry a "Japan Inside" label, Japan plays a pivotal role in our everyday lives across many critical industries. This book is an in-depth exploration of current Japanese business strategies that make Japan the world's third-largest economy and an economic leader in Asia. To accomplish their reinvention, Japan's largest companies are building new processes of breakthrough innovation. Central to this book is how they are addressing the necessary changes in organizational design, internal management processes, employment, and corporate governance. Because Japan values social stability and economic equality, this reinvention is happening slowly and methodically, and has gone largely unnoticed by Western observers. Yet, Japan's more balanced model of "caring capitalism" is both competitive and transformative, and more socially responsible than the unbridled growth approach of the United States.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Dortmund (Wirtschaft), language: English, abstract: This thesis deals with the adequate preparation when planning business endeavours with Japanese Companies. As Japan is the second largest market in Asia and one of the strongest markets worldwide, it is an important trading partner for Western countries. Many companies, when attempting to move into the Japanese market, run into difficulties that derive from wrong expectations and misunderstandings. These difficulties can be managed with decent preparation. Therefore, the objective of this thesis is the elaboration of a training program based on an analysis of the Japanese business culture. To achieve this goal, we combined a profound categorization of the Japanese culture with interviews we conducted with people who have gained experience with the Japanese business culture in order to identify possible obstacles on the one hand and determine best practice preparations and to derive an exemplary training program on the other. The results of the different parts of the thesis provide the foundation of an exemplary training program designed to simplify the transition for businesses intending to expand in the Japanese market. This training program combines extensive general culture and language orientation that help easing the transition with a focus on Japanese idiosyncrasies in business. The key elements include the unique characteristics of communication in Japanese business. This training program will improve cross-cultural communication and thus mutual business relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The values and behaviors of the Japanese businessman--and of the Japanese in general--are quite diverse and keep changing, making it difficult for anyone (including the Japanese themselves) to truly understand why they act the way they do. The Eight Core Values of the Japanese Businessman saves readers time and effort when pursuing business opportunities in Japan because it identifies the core values of the Japanese businessman, ranging from the obvious and public, “Diligence,” to the more private, “Silence as Eloquence” and “Perception of Time.” After identifying these eight core values, Yasutaka Sai explores the history and modern interpretation of each. Based on over 300 Japanese language sources--otherwise unavailable to those who do not read Japanese--The Eight Core Values of the Japanese Businessman reveals the diversity and dynamism of Japanese values and behaviors. This information empowers businesspeople and international business educators to develop solid business relationships with the Japanese. With many years of experience, the author focuses on specific values that are most common among Japanese in the business world. These are not exclusive, but the most prevalent or widely shared values that Western businesspeople are likely to encounter: Japanese diligence, work ethic, and “Gambarism” or persistence group orientation: sense of belonging and participation, spirit of harmony, interpersonal relations aesthetics and perfectionism curiosity and emphasis on innovation respect for form and “Hana Yori Dango” or practicality a mind for competition and outlook on rewards the value of silence as eloquence perception of time As there is no single uniformly accepted source for the values of today's Japanese citizen or business person, Sai's exploration opens a vital window into understanding many Japanese values and behaviors. The Eight Core Values of the Japanese Businessman is vital reading for those with international business concerns--business and management educators, businesspeople interested in how Japanese managers manage and employees work, and practicing managers interested in cross-cultural management issues. It allows readers to develop good relationships with the Japanese based on a realistic understanding of how they think and act, both individually and as members of business organizations.

Book excerpt: This book looks at Japanese companies in manufacturing and services sectors and how they are trying to emerge from the prolonged uncertainty of the pandemic. The chapters are written by those dealing with Japanese business under the shadow of the pandemic and being influenced by the continuous and rapid adoption of digital technologies in business and our daily lives. This book brings together the experiences of big and small corporations while looking at how digital transformation and the pandemic combined have led to a transformation in the product, production processes and services. It highlights the role played by robots, 3-D printing and renewable energy in manufacturing while the impact can be seen in the changes coming to future offices, how we work and interact and how we relax through tourism and travel on the service side. The services sector is as much impacted by digital transformation and the pandemic as any other field in business. Aimed at academics, researchers and practitioners, Japanese Business Operations in an Uncertain World will provide valuable insights into how Japanese organizations are adapting to the dual impact of the pandemic and advancements in digital technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its original publication, Japanese Etiquette & Ethics in Business, the pioneering work on the subject, has been the standard guide for Westerners doing business with the Japanese--either here or abroad. In this new edition Boyd Lafayette De Mente, who has been living and working in Japan for more than twenty-five years, examines those characteristics that epitomize the Japanese character and business personality. De Mente explains how concepts from daily life extend to dealings in business and how loyalty to the family and nation applies to professional relationships as well. Throughout this book De Mente offers invaluable advice to Westerners wishing to do business with the Japanese. In an all new chapter De Mente compares the Japanese and Western approaches to business pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of each. This is the one book on Japanese business structure and practices that offers explanations for what appears to many foreigners to be confusing and contradictory behavior by their Japanese counterparts. As part of a rationale for Japan's economic achievements, De Mente has formulated "Japan's Five Commandments for Success," which he presents here for the first time. No other hook is as informative about the cultural factors that shape business practices in Japan. The insights that De Mente has gathered as the results of his long experience in Japan are presented on every page. No one who goes East with the intention of doing business with the Japanese should do so without first consulting Japanese Etiquette & Ethics in Business. "I am delighted to see this revised and expanded edition of a book that has become something of a classic over the decades. Boyd De Mente's long experience in Japan . . . has given him a keen insight into the cultural factors that shaped and still control management practices in Japan." -- Yasutaka Sai, Vice President International Japan Management Association "This book is 'must' reading for anyone with even a marginal interest in Japan and Japanese business." -- William K. Nickoson, President Asia Dynamics (Japan) Ltd. "Until foreign businesspeople fully understand and learn how to cope with the cultural factors underlying Japanese society, particularly such elements as discrimination and egotism, they will not be able to understand or work effectively with the Japanese. Boyd De Mente's Japanese Etiquette & Ethics in Business provides the basis for this understanding, along with practical advice on bridging cultural differences." -- John Artise, Vice President Drake Beam Morin, Inc.
