Download or read book New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones written by Richard F. Veit and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the earliest memorials used by Native Americans to the elaborate structures of the present day, Richard Veit and Mark Nonestied use grave markers to take an off-beat look at New Jersey’s history that is both fascinating and unique. New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones presents a culturally diverse account of New Jersey’s historic burial places from High Point to Cape May and from the banks of the Delaware to the ocean-washed Shore, to explain what cemeteries tell us about people and the communities in which they lived. The evidence ranges from somber seventeenth-century decorations such as hourglasses and skulls that denoted the brevity of colonial life, to modern times where memorials, such as a life-size granite Mercedes Benz, reflect the materialism of the new millennium. Also considered are contemporary novelties such as pet cemeteries and what they reveal about today’s culture. To tell their story the authors visited more than 1,000 burial grounds and interviewed numerous monument dealers and cemetarians. This richly illustrated book is essential reading for history buffs and indeed anyone who has ever wandered inquisitively through their local cemeteries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating new addition to the Images of America series offers a glimpse into the unique history of Scotch Plains and Fanwood, New Jersey. This wonderful new book contains more than 200 fascinating photographs, maps, and prints and brings to life the people, places, and events which have defined Scotch Plains and Fanwood over the centuries. These images invite us to explore the area's rich history from the time of its first settlement, in 1684, to the present day. Scotch Plains and Fanwood were originally one community, also encompassing the area now known as Feltville or Glenside Park. From the beginning, the region played a critical role in American history. The Battle of the Short Hills, from June 14 to June 30, 1777, between the British under General Howe and the Revolutionary Army under George Washington, took place here. During the nineteenth century, Scotch Plains became an important stop on the Swift Sure stage line between New York and Philadelphia. As New York City burgeoned during the nineteenth century and the railroad arrived in Central New Jersey, Scotch Plains and Fanwood became a bedroom community of the metropolis. Finally, in 1895, Fanwood was chartered independently. Later, Feltville became part of the Union County Park System. Local authors Richard and Suzanne Bousquet have brought together a unique collection of photographs and maps from both the Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood and from private collections. They have combined this superb collection with informative captions to create a fascinating journey down memory lane that will be enjoyed by old and young, resident and visitor alike.

Download or read book Elizabeth written by Jean-Rae Turner and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003-08-27 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth, New Jersey is a city of firsts: first English-speaking colony in the state, first state capital, first home of Princeton University, and the site of the first shots fired after the Declaration of Independence. This impressive history is bolstered by the town's production of the first U.S. Navy submarine, Singer sewing machine, and ice cream soda, but these triumphs should not overshadow the hardships endured along the way. With no precedent to guide the way, the industrious people of Elizabeth built traditions rather than uphold them, and for nearly 340 years this community has forged its own path against the landscape without losing its small-town flavor. Elizabeth: The First Capital of New Jersey is the uplifting record of the people who settled land and built homes, many of which are still populated by their descendants. Tales of the sacrifices of a rich colonial history lead seamlessly into stories about the Singer Sewing Machine Company, which changed the face of the city's commerce, and the Morris Turnpike and Central Railroad that form the heart of the transportation industry to which Elizabeth owes much of its economic well being. Presented in both lucid word and striking image, Elizabeth: The First Capital of New Jersey depicts the people, places, and events that secured Elizabeth's well deserved place in the history of America. The hard-working citizens who had the foresight to develop a diverse economic, religious, and cultural base for the "City of Churches" are memorialized in this new volume.
