Book excerpt: This publication was prepared by the UNCTAD secretariat to commemorate the first three decades of the Trade and Development Report (TDR) - UNCTAD's main flagship publication - whose first edition was published in 1981.Part one of this publication traces the key issues relating to the global economy and development strategies discussed in various TDRs over the past three decades. It also shows how the ideas, analytical perspectives and policy proposals expressed in the TDR have differed from "mainstream" thinking, and how they have evolved in response to new challenges arising from global economic developments. The salient features reviewed in this publication are: the concept of interdependence, which has shaped the TDRs' policy analyses and recommendations over three decades; the approach of the TDR to macroeconomic and financial policies in both developed and developing countries; the TDRs' contribution to the debate about the shortcomings and the need for reform of global governance in trade, finance and macroeconomics; the TDRs' assessments of the failures and successes of development policy, as well as their recommendations for development strategies, taking into account lessons from past experiences; and Issues that remain topical and others that may become relevant for analysis in future TDRs.Part two of the publication comprises the contributions of the experts who participated in a panel discussion on "Thinking Development: Three Decades of the Trade and Development Report", a pre-Conference event for UNCTAD XIII, which took place in Geneva on 20 February 2012.

Book Synopsis Measuring and Analyzing the Impact of GVCs on Economic Development by : World Trade Organization
Download or read book Measuring and Analyzing the Impact of GVCs on Economic Development written by World Trade Organization and published by World Trade Organization. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is about a huge contribution to our deepening understanding of what the global economy really means and how it is changing. The report helpfully distinguishes elements of an economy that are tradable and the large set that are non-tradable. Clearly the tradables set is expanding with the support of enabling technology. The report argues that connectivity in the networks that define the evolving architecture of GVCs is important. This Global Value Chain Development Report is the result of intensive and detailed work in assembling and analyzing data on the structure of economies and on how they are linked. It creates a much clearer picture of evolving patterns of independence. It also presents a much clearer picture of comparative advantage. --Publisher description.

Book Synopsis E-commerce, WTO and Developing Countries by : Arvind Panagariya
Download or read book E-commerce, WTO and Developing Countries written by Arvind Panagariya and published by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. This book was released on 2000 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the policy issues that e-commerce raises for the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and developing countries. Electronic commerce offers unprecedented opportunities to both developed and developing countries. In the short term, due to lack of infrastructure in the developing countries, the gains are likely to be concentrated in the developed countries. In the long term, the developing countries have more to benefit and they can gain by skipping some of the stages in development of information technology through which developed countries have had to pass. The author has three policy proposals for developing countries. First, that it would be most appropriate to classify e-commerce as trade with services with GATS discipline applied to it. Classifying e-commerce as goods trade with a permanent zero custom duty pact would liberalise all e-commerce by default, undermining the bargaining power of developing countries. Secondly Internet transactions would be best classified as cross-border trade rather than consumption abroad. The last proposal is that developing countries with the capacity to export skilled services through the Internet, should aggressively negotiate market access with developed countries in the future WTO negotiations aiming to seek liberalisation in the sectors in which they have comparative advantage and recognition of their education, qualifications and skills etc.
