Book Synopsis Uncorrected Papers by : Wallace Matson
Download or read book Uncorrected Papers written by Wallace Matson and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2012-02-29 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These incisive, witty, and completely accessible essays on a wide range of topics by historian of philosophy Wallace Matson admirably demonstrate that philosophy can still be based on careful reasoning and presented with clarity of expression. Against fashionable contemporary views, Matson asserts that philosophy is "the most important subject in the college curriculum," because it is the investigation into what rationality is. Getting the answer wrong to the question "What does it mean to be reasonable?" is the most catastrophic of errors. The motivation for most of the essays in this collection is his perception that this error is being widely committed and that received opinion on many topics is dead wrong. Accordingly, he takes issue with the following beliefs: bodily resurrection is possible; zombies are logically possible (as David Chalmers claims); John Rawls wrote a book on justice; religion is an aid to morality; Zeno and Parmenides tried to prove that nothing really moves; the actual world is only one out of an infinity of possible worlds; and much more. Also included are two essays on Matson''s distinctions between high and low beliefs, four essays on Spinoza, and, in conclusion, "The Study of Philosophy as a Prophylactic against Bullshit."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Jerome (ca. 347-420), one of the four Latin Fathers of the Church (along with Sts. Augustine, Ambrose, and Gregory the Great), is particularly famous for translating the Bible into Latin, known as the Vulgate Bible. The saint spent four years in the Syrian desert as a hermit, mortifying his flesh and elevating his spirit through study. The subject has given Pinturicchio the opportunity to depict a monumental, rocky landscape, while the lizard and the scorpion call attention to the desolation of the scene. The open book contains a passage from a letter attributed to St. Augustine in which Jerome is compared to St. John the Baptist, another saint who lived in the wilderness.

Book Synopsis Regret the Error by : Craig Silverman
Download or read book Regret the Error written by Craig Silverman and published by Union Square + ORM. This book was released on 2010-09-10 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This look at careless journalism—from hilarious mistakes to egregious ethical lapses—is “chock-full of amusing historical anecdotes” (Publishers Weekly). Winner of the National Press Club’s Arthur Rowse Award for Press Criticism We regret the error: it’s a phrase that appears in newspapers almost daily, the standard notice that something went terribly wrong in the reporting, editing, or printing of an article. From Craig Silverman, the proprietor of www.RegretTheError.com, one of the Internet’s most popular media-related websites, comes a collection of funny, shocking, and sometimes disturbing journalistic slip-ups and corrections. On display are all types of media inaccuracy—from typos to “fuzzy math” to “obiticide” (printing the obituary of a person very much alive and well) to complete and utter ethical lapses. While some of the errors can be laugh-out-loud funny, the book also serves as a sobering journey through the history of media mistakes (including the outrageous hoaxes that dominated newspapers during the circulation wars of the nineteenth century) and a serious muckraking investigation of contemporary journalism’s lack of accountability to the public. Regret the Error shines a spotlight on the media’s carelessness and the sometimes tragic and calamitous consequences of weak or non-existent fact checking. “Mixing humorous corrections taken from large and small newspapers alike, Silverman gives historical context to the current problems . . . and then proposes solutions for busy newsrooms.” —Variety

Book Synopsis Life and Works of Rufinus with Jerome’s Apology Against Rufinus by : Rufinus
Download or read book Life and Works of Rufinus with Jerome’s Apology Against Rufinus written by Rufinus and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exposition is well written and clear; but it is not in itself of much value. The text on which he comments is very faulty: for instance, in the Blessing of Reuben, instead of the words “the excellency of dignity and the excellency of power,” it has “durus conversatione, et durus, temerarius.” When Rufinus adheres to the plain interpretation of the passage his comments are sensible and clear; but he soon passes to the mystic sense: Reuben is God’s first-born people, the Jews, and the couch which he defiles is the law of the Old Testament; and the moral interpretation is grounded on the supposed meaning of Reuben, “the Son who is seen,” that is the visible, carnal man, who breaks through the law. So, in Judah’s “binding his foal to the vine,” the explanation given as he says, by the Jews, that the vines will be so plentiful that they are used even for tying up the young colts, is dismissed.
