Book excerpt: Throughout the ages vessels have been made not only for functional purposes, but also for creative expression. We see priceless examples of these vessels in museums, all made from natural substances. In modern times, this type of artistry has largely been replaced with disposable vessels made from synthetic materials. Tucson artist Edwin K. Hill has dedicated thirty years of his life to changing this. He has helped bring the Southwest into the artistic world by creating unique vessels inspired by and made from the natural surroundings of Southern Arizona. With this colorful, step-by-step guide, you too can create amazing vessels from nature. About the Author Dr. Hill lived his early childhood on a dry land ranch, assembling complicated contraptions from the boneyard of retired farming equipment and constructing carpentry projects that utilized scraps of wood and rusty nails. School opened up new vistas for him as he learned to work with power tools and a variety of new materials and developed his artistic awareness. Entering college at Eastern Washington University with a basketball scholarship in his pocket and a dream of engineering in mind, he soon found his way to the industrial arts department. There was little doubt in the direction of his future when it became clear that he could continue his love affair with hands-on creations and enjoy the benefits of the education profession. Throughout his career he taught industrial arts and education at all levels, from elementary grades through university graduate study. His masters and doctorate degrees, both from Washington State University, are in education. His unique vessels have been shown in numerous galleries across the country.

Book excerpt: The first book in a seafaring fantasy trilogy that George R. R. Martin has described as “even better than the Farseer Trilogy—I didn’t think that was possible.” Bingtown is a hub of exotic trade and home to a merchant nobility famed for its liveships—rare vessels carved from wizardwood, which ripens magically into sentient awareness. Now the fortunes of one of Bingtown’s oldest families rest on the newly awakened liveship Vivacia. For Althea Vestrit, the ship is her rightful legacy. For Althea’s young nephew, wrenched from his religious studies and forced to serve aboard the Vivacia, the ship is a life sentence. But the fate of the ship—and the Vestrits—may ultimately lie in the hands of an outsider: the ruthless buccaneer captain Kennit, who plans to seize power over the Pirate Isles by capturing a liveship and bending it to his will. Don’t miss the magic of the Liveship Traders Trilogy: SHIP OF MAGIC • MAD SHIP • SHIP OF DESTINY

This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing constitutes a persistent and pressing problem estimated to account for up to US$23 billion annually in the APFIC area. The effects of IUU fishing can be severe, particularly for small-island and coastal developing states heavily dependent on fisheries, and include adverse impacts on peoples’ livelihoods, food security, national economies and the environment. Countries unable to fulfil international obligations for fisheries management and governance risk incurring trade sanctions on their fisheries exports, an increasing issue as export markets tighten their permitting. Furthermore, IUU fishing is increasingly associated with national and transnational organised criminal activities, although the evidence remains mixed. FAO commissioned this report two years ago to produce an independent update to an unpublished 2015 study on IUU fishing in the APFIC area of competence, which was presented to the APFIC as an information paper in 2016 (FAO 2016a). The 2015 study used a mixture of media reports, literature review, and interviews to build a picture of hotspots of illegal fishing across the APFIC area of competence. This report builds on the previous work, incorporating additional analysis methods to predict illegal fishing in a transparent manner. Based on discussions with the APFIC Secretariat, it was decided to limit the study to the illegal component of IUU fishing. A key difference with the 2015 study is the extension of the estimation of illegal fishing from the 33 hotspots covered in the 2015 study to the entire APFIC area of competence in this study. This report provides the following key outputs: (i) development and implementation of an agreed methodology for estimating illegal fishing levels and progress; (ii) information from case studies in three Asia-Pacific countries; and (iii) analysis of results from the agreed method estimating the incidence of illegal fishing and implication of efforts to reduce it. The approach taken to achieve these goals included a structured online survey of fisheries officials in APFIC countries, semi-structured interviews of key informants knowledgeable about illegal fishing in the APFIC region, and analysis of articles on illegal fishing from public media data across the APFIC area of competence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying archaeological evidence from sites covering over 200 kilometres of the banks of the Euphrates River, Lisa Cooper's excellent monograph explores the growth and development of human settlement in the Euphrates River Valley of Northern Syria during the Early and Middle Bronze Ages from circa 2700 to 1550 BC. Cooper focuses on the nature and development of the urban politics that existed in the area during these periods and highlights two principal inter-related characteristics of the Euphrates Valley: the study of specific aspects of Euphrates culture, such as the nature of urban secular and religious architecture, mortuary remains, and subsistence pursuits, to underline the unique character of this region during the Early and Middle Bronze Ages the striking resilience of its cultural traditions over many centuries despite the political instability and environmental degradation. Including studies on the tribal background of the populations, the economy, the unique geography of the Euphrates, the ethnic and social structure of its inhabitants, and the influences of states surrounding it, this is a unique and invaluable resource for all students of archaeology and ancient history.
