Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's semiconductor technology, the size of a transistor is made smaller and smaller. One of the key challenges presently faced by the designers is the increasing impact of process variations to circuit performances. As a result, circuits designed using the traditional methods can deviate from the desired specifications after being manufactured. Therefore, new circuit design and characterization methodologies are required to handle these process variations. The problem of estimating the circuit performance at a transistor-level due to parameter uncertainties is examined. Uncertainty in circuit process and device parameters arises as a result of manufacturing variability. Since electrical circuits are, in general, complex and nonlinear systems, estimating their performances efficiently and accurately is very challenging. Existing methods on propagating uncertainties in circuit parameters to circuit performance include worst case corner analysis, Monte-Carlo simulations, response surface modeling, sensitivity analysis and unscented transformation. In this work, a novel interval based circuit simulation algorithm is proposed. An interval is a quantity consists of noise variables following Gaussian. The algorithm is developed for both Gaussian and non-Gaussian process variations. When the uncertainty in the circuit process and device parameters can be captured by correlated Gaussian distributions, the process/device parameters are first represented by the appropriate interval representations. An interval-valued SPICE simulator, in which all real number operations are replaced by interval operations, is used to simulate the circuit. The simulation results are therefore interval-values that can be used to extract performance statistics. In this approach, only one circuit simulation is required to obtain the best Gaussian distribution approximation for any circuit performance. The algorithm is tested on RC circuits and transistor circuits with excellent simulation accuracy (

Book excerpt: The development of a statistically-based process for verification and validation of computational experiments is presented in this study. The process can be used to identify sources of uncertainty, quantify magnitudes of uncertainty, and propagate uncertainty through a model. Model form error was identified through prototype experiments with the system and subsystem, and methods for reducing model form error are presented. Existing validation metrics are applied to the system in this analysis, and a new statistical validation metric is introduced. The methodology for performing Uncertainty Analysis (UA), nonlinear Sensitivity Analysis (SA), and nonlinear Uncertainty Propagation (UP) is presented in this investigation as part of the validation process. The results of this portion of the methodology guided the development of the experimental design and evaluation. Experimental validation experiments were developed for a simple electrical system in order to demonstrate the computational-to-experimental validation process. The process is applicable to any system, but a simple example was chosen so that any interested person can follow the implementation. Despite the simplicity of the system selected, the analysis proved to be complicated and tedious, while also identifying many avenues for future work. A numerical example is presented along with the relevant data in sufficient detail to demonstrate how the analysis was performed. By applying this new process, the electrical system is studied from a statistical perspective, with an emphasis on uncertainty quantification and propagation. The sensitivity analysis discovered that the behavior of each component varied significantly, and several critical parameters were identified. By identifying and quantifying the uncertainty in each parameter, the quality of the computational model can be improved, and decisions can be made with quantifiable confidence.

Book excerpt: by Kurt Keutzer Those looking for a quick overview of the book should fast-forward to the Introduction in Chapter 1. What follows is a personal account of the creation of this book. The challenge from Earl Killian, formerly an architect of the MIPS processors and at that time Chief Architect at Tensilica, was to explain the significant performance gap between ASICs and custom circuits designed in the same process generation. The relevance of the challenge was amplified shortly thereafter by Andy Bechtolsheim, founder of Sun Microsystems and ubiquitous investor in the EDA industry. At a dinner talk at the 1999 International Symposium on Physical Design, Andy stated that the greatest near-term opportunity in CAD was to develop tools to bring the performance of ASIC circuits closer to that of custom designs. There seemed to be some synchronicity that two individuals so different in concern and character would be pre-occupied with the same problem. Intrigued by Earl and Andy’s comments, the game was afoot. Earl Killian and other veterans of microprocessor design were helpful with clues as to the sources of the performance discrepancy: layout, circuit design, clocking methodology, and dynamic logic. I soon realized that I needed help in tracking down clues. Only at a wonderful institution like the University of California at Berkeley could I so easily commandeer an ab- bodied graduate student like David Chinnery with a knowledge of architecture, circuits, computer-aided design and algorithms.

Book excerpt: This book is about large-scale electronic circuits design driven by nanotechnology, where nanotechnology is broadly defined as building circuits using nanoscale devices that are either implemented with nanomaterials (e.g., nanotubes or nanowires) or following an unconventional method (e.g., FinFET or III/V compound-based devices). These nanoscale devices have significant potential to revolutionize the fabrication and integration of electronic systems and scale beyond the perceived scaling limitations of traditional CMOS. While innovations in nanotechnology originate at the individual device level, realizing the true impact of electronic systems demands that these device-level capabilities be translated into system-level benefits. This is the first book to focus on nanoscale circuits and their design issues, bridging the existing gap between nanodevice research and nanosystem design.
