Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uncertainty Analysis of Radar Cross Section Calibrations at Etcheron Valley Range The Etcheron Valley Range (evr) measures radar cross section of various targets provided by United States military and civilian customers. The evr currently Operates coherent ros measurement systems capable of measuring in the vhf, uhf, L, S, C, X, Ku and Ka bands (see Appendix A, Table a.i). The North 40 look - down slant range and the South 40 outdoor bounce range (see Figures are two fully operational sytems. Typical targets measured on these ranges are unmanned aerial vehicles, airplane components, air craft models and components, ship models and components, missiles and tactical ballistic missiles, very low - observable (vlo) articles, reentry vehicles, ground vehicles, rockets and rocket plumes. The North 40 range can also be used to simulate the ocean environment for measuring the ros of ship models and components. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phase Dependence in Radar Cross Section Measurements In the calibration model, where the radar cross section of the calibration target is known, the error signals can be removed from the measurements to obtain an accurate system calibration. When the radar cross section of the target is unknown, only error signals with a constant phase can be removed from the measurements. Error signals that vary in-phase with the theoretical signal Will introduce a bias that increases the uncertainty of the measurements. One is the strength of the radar bean sweeping over a target, the other is the strength of the reflected echo senses by the receiver. This book shows how the RCS "gauge" can be predicted for theoretical objects.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The error bounds for accuracy of radar cross section (RCS) measurements of targets in clutter are examined in detail. Traditional error bounds are based on precision at every individual aspect angle and on two deterministic sources (target and clutter). In this thesis a model is developed that describes the target and clutter probabilistically. The requirement of accuracy at every point is replaced by a requirement for accuracy of a running average of measured RCS values. The probability distribution of the ratio of the averaged, measured RCS to the averaged, true, free space target RCS is calculated. The standard deviation of this ratio represents how much the averaged, measured RCS data diverages from the averaged, true, free space target RCS. The results show that accuracy improves for increasing signal to clutter ratios, and also for increasing levels of averaging. Even averaging as few as eleven points, this new measure is shown to give more confidence in the measured, averaged results than the traditional approach. (Author).
