Book excerpt: “Who you see is who I am, and what you see is what you get!” How many of us can say these words and mean it? Too many people hide behind masks of pretense, whether it is socially, emotionally, spiritually, or physically simply to gain the approval or acceptance of others. One of the greatest challenges many people face today, especially Christians, is trying to live an authentic (unbogus) life in a world full of fake (bogus) people. Thus, this book is a real eye-opener on the subject of bogusness versus unbogusness. The author gives valuable insight into how to avoid living a bogus life and how to pursue an unbogus life. Having your outer man match your inner man is the goal of this book. This powerfully written book will also challenge you to rise above your unbogus behavior and find true contentment, peace, and self-worth. Finally, this book will give you a game plan to cast out areas of unbogusness in your life that have kept you from living your best life.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive first course in Scheme, covering all of its major features: abstraction, functional programming, data types, recursion, and semantic programming. Although the primary goal is to teach students to program in Scheme, this will be suitable for anyone taking a general programming principles course. Each chapter is divided into three sections: core, appendix , and problems. Most essential topics are covered in the core section, but it is assumed that most students will read the appendices and solve most of the problems - all of which require short Scheme procedures. As well as providing a thorough grounding in Scheme, the author discusses different programming paradigms in depth. An important theme throughout is that of "meta-programming", thus providing an insight into topics such as type-checking and overloading which might otherwise be missed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the Bible allow us to deceive? Is it ever right to lie? These are perennial questions that have been discussed and debated by theologians for centuries with little consensus. Entering this conversation, Just Deceivers provides a fresh analysis of this important topic through a comprehensive examination of the motif of deception in the books of Samuel. While many studies have explored deception in other Old Testament texts--especially the patriarchal narratives of Genesis--and a few articles have initiated examination of this motif in Samuel, Just Deceivers builds upon this groundwork and offers an exhaustive treatment of this theme in this important portion of the Hebrew Bible. Newkirk takes the reader through the books of Samuel, investigating every occurrence of deception in the narrative, exploring how the author depicts these various acts of deception, and then synthesizing the results to offer an exegetically based theology of deception. In so doing, this study both challenges commonly held views concerning the Bible's stance on falsehood and illustrates the importance of attending to the sophisticated literary character of biblical narrative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone has mistaken one thing for another, such as a stranger for an acquaintance. A person who has mistaken two things, Joseph L. Camp argues, even on a massive scale, is still capable of logical thought. In order to make that idea precise, one needs a logic of confused thought that is blind to the distinction between the objects that have been confused. Confused thought and language cannot be characterized as true or false even though reasoning conducted in such language can be classified as valid or invalid. To the extent that philosophers have addressed this issue at all, they take it for granted that confusion is a kind of ambiguity. Camp rejects this notion; his fundamental claim is that confusion is not a mental state. To attribute confusion to someone is to take up a paternalistic stance in evaluating his reasoning. Camp proposes a novel characterization of confusion, and then demonstrates its fruitfulness with several applications in the history of philosophy and the history of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Corps, Republic of South Vietnam, bloody 1968 Live the harrowing highs and traumatic lows of one marine youth who finds his seven-month “in country” war-weary self carrying a field radio burden for a suspect glory-minded forward observer artillery officer who’d yet to learn the undeclared war was a government sham, a political ruse that would one tragic day force the FO team’s “command structured” relationship to a “who’s responsible” head over a short round of friendly artillery, which put their field commander permanently out of action. The resolve-testing war with the North Vietnamese Army, the near immobilizing, ever-sweltering jungle mountains and sandy flatlands, the thought-friendly villages, the two of our people executed, the four enemy prisoners executed in turn, as well as President Johnson’s bombing halts and retaking enemy positions are the nerve-pickling building blocks shackled themselves together like a confrontation-packed novel about combat-weary vets not taught to run from a political fight either. Experience the combative days, literally sweat the chancy nights, devour the popular songs . . . when lucky enough to hear such haunting “sounds” as “Get Off My Cloud” by the Rolling Stones. For one can’t simply “throw their rifle down and quit!” The corps will toss said shameless in the brig for untold years; though a panicked one can steal away into the masking jungle and surrender, yet hard-core enemy will put a bullet through a deserter’s enlisted head like a pesky bunker rat, unless one’s a commissioned officer, then the VC “might” keep said alive as a “peace”-bargaining chip. One may understand the historic reason why many the combat marine during such oh-so-questioning times likened themselves to the politically used, if not correct, title of Uncle Sam’s misguided children—know what it’s truly like to stalk and be stalked, kill or be killed, fear and be feared.

Book excerpt: Contango is a book by James Hilton. Hilton was an English novelist and playwriter. Excerpt: "Gathergood was forty-nine, and had spent a quarter of a century in various parts of the East. He had never married, nor had rumour ever associated him with a woman, white or coloured. He was aware that women did not particularly care for him, and he had never found their indifference hard to endure. With men, individual men, he had sometimes wished he could become more intimate, but even the wish for this had rarely been enough to make for keen disappointment."

It is a genuinely warm, tender, humorous coming of age story while at the same time being a novel that is smart, informative and illuminating in the fields of genetics, autism as an increasingly proliferating condition, fast food and obesity as national crises, and the overemphasis of pill-popping for invented childhood and adult disorders.
