Book excerpt: Isabella Bird's Unbeaten Tracks in Japan was published in 1880 and recounts her travels in the Far East from 1876. Bird was recommended an open-air life from an early age as a cure for her physical and nervous difficulties. She toured the United States and Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the Sandwich Islands, before travelling to the Far East in order to strengthen herself to marry Dr John Bishop and live in Edinburgh. Created out of the letters Bird wrote home, primarily to her sister, Volume 1 recounts her experiences as a solo woman traveller living among the Japanese in Yokohama and Niigata. It includes descriptions of clothing, food and drink, education, housing, theatre, women's lifestyles, religion, plant life, medicine, shopping and other day-to-day activities, as well as the vicissitudes and excitement of the conditions and process of travelling, including by boat and pack-horse.

Book excerpt: In a land not so far away, and closer than one may think lives familiar friends, in familiar places, yet in a world so different from our own. It?s a land where an average garden gnome may live a not so average life; where he may learn that tending gardens is by far NOT his greatest responsibility.Charlie, a 15" garden gnome takes his responsibilities very seriously, so seriously, that it leads him on an adventure of a lifetime. This is a story of good versus evil, where good may not always prevail; a story filled with mystical creatures, living hand-in-hand with dwarves, elves, and warlocks. And, of course, no magical tale would be complete without a dragon or two, as well. This is a story of heart, a story of wonder, and a story you'll want to pass on to generations to come.

Book excerpt: If at one time we thought that the movement to science would yield unification of the discipline, it is now apparent that there are many roads to science. Still it is important for us to consider yet again what the appropriate goals are for our scientific enterprise. What works in theory building; induction and deduction; prediction and control; the search for useful principles to guide us OCo examining these questions, we can build a better science. Political science has come so far as a discipline that different schools and scholars have different interpretations of science in the study of politics, and that diversity is important to maintain. Advances made in the study of political institutions and behavior are described in twelve essays from the 1983 annual meeting of the American Political Science Association . Addressing they do not employ any single approach to the study of the science of politics. Taken as a whole, they illustrate the multiplicity of interpretations that are presently given to the common enterprise."
