Book excerpt: The Joan Miró Foundation was the first public institution set up in Barcelona to focus entirely on contemporary art. Joan Miró and Josep Lluís Sert the building’s designer and a founder member of GATCPAC (a leading group in the introduction of modern architecture in Catalonia) first met in 1932 and became close friends while working on the Spanish (Republican) Pavilion at the ParisWorld Fair in 1937. After the first big retrospective of Miró’s work (1968), the artist had decided to set up a building to make his work accessible to the public on a permanent basis. Sert was commissioned and created an open-plan structure in which the interior space communicated with the exterior, producing a perfect balance between architecture and landscape. Since then, the Foundation has been expanded on two occasions. The architect commissioned to carry out this task was Jaume Freixa, a pupil of Sert's who had worked with him for eleven years at Harvard and had played an active part in the creation of the Foundation.

Book excerpt: Reeling from a divorce, a woman commits a brutal murder Anna’s husband has left her, and he took their friends with him. Fifty years old and on her own for the first time in decades, Anna drifts through the world of Manhattan singles parties, where wrinkled women fight for the right to flirt with paunchy, middle-aged men. One night she lets herself be taken home by one of these flabby lotharios, but when the man wants more than ordinary sex, Anna snaps. She bashes his head in, hitting him over and over until his face is nothing but a bloody mess. The next morning, she doesn’t remember a thing. The detective investigating the murder is transfixed by Anna, and they begin a hesitant love affair. But as more and more evidence points to Anna, and her memory of that fateful night comes creeping back, this budding romance may take a turn for the worse.

Book excerpt: This collection of surveys and research papers on recent topics of interest in combinatorics is dedicated to Paul Erdös, who attended the conference and who is represented by two articles in the collection, including one, unfinished, which he was writing on the eve of his sudden death. Erdös was one of the greatest mathematicians of his century and often the subject of anecdotes about his somewhat unusual lifestyle. A new preface, written by friends and colleagues, gives a flavor of his life, including many such stories, and also describes the broad outline and importance of his work in combinatorics and other related fields.

Book excerpt: With Europe reduced to rubble after the Second World War, Constance must seek knowledge beyond the modern in order to heal her patients—and herself. In Durrell’s fourth installment of the Avignon Quintet, Constance returns to Europe after the end of World War II. A Freudian analyst, she treats the shell-shocked, the battle-fatigued, and other despairing survivors in Geneva. She also treats the traumatized, autistic son of her former lover, Sebastian—a situation that draws her back into the mysterious cult that the sensitive and charismatic Sebastian led in the deserts of Egypt. In Sebastian, Constance’s pursuit of wisdom in the midst of Europe’s blackest night is rendered as a gorgeous and heartbreaking quest for truth in a world full of illusion.
