Book excerpt: During the Spring 2017 semester, I taught a West Virginia University (WVU) Honors English course on Isaac Asimov. It was the first time such a course has been offered at WVU and likely one of the first times such a course has been taught anywhere in academe. In reality, a wonderful group of WVU Honors College students taught me. Although I have been a big fan of Asimov for 35 years and have read more than 100 of his books, I was amazed by how many new insights and perspectives I gained on Asimov and his work from the students' comments and questions in class and their answers on the exams.I also caught a glimpse of the future of speculative/science fiction. For the course's final creative project, I asked each student to write a work of science fiction. Novel, play, poem, script, short story, other-they had complete freedom in their choice of format. This anthology contains the creative writing projects from students in the course who agreed to have their work included. If these clever, compelling, creative stories are any indication, the future of speculative/science fiction is in good hands. I have entitled this anthology Umbra: Stories from the Shadows. The title celebrates the occurrence of a total solar eclipse on 21 August 2017, and also reflects the variety of "gray areas" of human experience in which these stories take place. Thanks to Stewart Plein, Assistant University Librarian, a copy of this collection will be placed in the WVU Libraries' Isaac Asimov Collection. Stewart gave the students an excellent introduction to WVU's Asimov Collection during a class field trip to the Libraries' Rare Book Room. Copies will be mailed to Larry Shaver and Carlos Patterson, whose generous donations comprise the majority of WVU's Asimov Collection. A copy will also be shared with the WVU Honors College.I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much I did. I have a feeling Isaac would have been proud.

Book excerpt: "A Song of an Older Time. A Memory Yet to Come. Long ago, the world was One. Everything lived in harmony. All creatures revered the great mother, Gaia. Then the fabric of the world was rent. Spirit was torn from matter by the claws of the Wyrm and the webs of the Weaver. From one world, two were born: the Earth and the Umbra. Werewolves still live between the two worlds. They have one foot in each, yet their home is neither. Great adventures await in the Umbra -- but so does death; the Wyrm has infiltrated the Shadow. The Apocalypse is coming, even in the spirit world. Umbra: The Velvet Shadow is a Werewolf sourcebook detailing the places, spirits and cosmology of the Garou spirit world".

Book excerpt: For fans of Dragon Pearl and the Lockwood & Co. series comes a swift-moving contemporary fantasy about a young girl tasked with destroying deadly shadow creatures. In Brannland, terrifying beasts called Umbrae roam freely once the sun sets, so venomous that a single bite will kill a full-grown adult—and lately, with each day that passes, their population seems to double. The only people who can destroy them are immune children like Nora, who are recruited at the age of seven to leave their families behind and begin training at a retrofitted castle called Noye’s Hill. But despite her immunity, Nora’s father refused to let her go. Now, years after his death by Umbra attack, Nora is twelve, and sees her mother almost killed by the monsters too. That’s when Nora decides it’s time for her to join the battle. Once she arrives at Noye’s Hill, though, she and her new friends are left with more questions than answers: Where are the Umbrae coming from? Could the government be covering up the true reason their population has whirled out of control? And was Nora’s father, the peaceful, big-hearted man who refused to let Nora fight, in on the treacherous secret?

Book excerpt: Umbra is a story of one woman's journey into the wilderness of her own being, a deliciously weird tale, both universal and unique, deeply disturbing, darkly funny, and altogether unforgettable. When Ohno Hoia, an amnesiac solitary seafarer, wakes up on a ship Umbra, the earth is desecrated, and humanity is moored in despair. As she navigates unknown waters for the search of land, she discovers that she's in possession of two extraordinary things: an ancient collection of seeds and a shadow of most wicked and unruly nature. After Ohno lands in a strange new world of modern-day California, she plants a garden the likes of which have not been seen since the days of Eden. As her plants' magical powers break the spell of collective apathy across North America, Ohno's vile shadow begins to threaten everything she holds dear. Through a series of mysterious coincidences and chance encounters, she realizes that the future of humanity is inextricably linked to her unremembered past, and her shadow will never stop plotting to destroy her until she asks the scariest of questions: Who am I?Even if discovering the answers kills her. Even if it already did. An explosive combo of enchanting fairy tale and piercing satire perfect for fans of Neil Gaiman, John Crowley, Kazuo Ishiguro's Buried Giant, and Lewis Carol's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Book excerpt: This anthology is a collection of spine-chilling narratives drawn from the darkest corners of the cosmos, where the laws of reality bend and twist, and the veil between the mundane and the macabre is perilously thin. Each tale serves as a portal to an otherworldly realm, where the inexplicable and the terrifying converge to weave a tapestry of cosmic horror. These stories are not bound by the limitations of our known universe; instead, they propel readers into the cosmic unknown, where the echoes of dread and the whispers of the eldritch dance in the shadows. As the curator of this ethereal compendium, I invite you, dear reader, to embark on a journey into the realms beyond the stars. Prepare to encounter malevolent entities, ancient forces, and unspeakable horrors that defy earthly comprehension. These stories are not for the faint of heart; they are tales that grip the soul and elicit a primal fear—a fear that resonates not only with the unknown lurking in the cosmos but also with the depths of the human psyche. In the following pages, you will traverse desolate planets shrouded in perpetual darkness, confront entities that defy the laws of nature, and witness the awakening of malevolent forces that have slumbered for eons. Each story is a portal to a different dimension, a glimpse into the cosmic nightmares that await those who dare to peer beyond the veil.

Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind devoted to the key role played by light and electromagnetic radiation in the universe. Readers are introduced to philosophical hypotheses such as the economy, symmetry and the universality of natural laws, and are then guided to practical consequences such as the rules of geometrical optics and even Einstein's well-known but mysterious relationship, E = mc2. Most chapters feature a pen picture of the life and character of a relevant scientific figure. These ‘Historical Interludes’ include, among others, Galileo's conflicts with the Inquisition, Fourier's taunting of the guillotine, Neils Bohr and World War II, and the unique character of Richard Feynman. The second edition has been revised and made more accessible to the general reader. Whenever possible, the mathematical material of the first edition has been replaced by appropriate text to give a verbal account of the mystery of the phenomenon of light and how its understanding has developed from pre-historic to present times. The emphasis is on reading for interest and enjoyment; formulae or equations which underpin and reinforce the argument are presented in a form which does not interfere with the flow of the text. The book will be of interest to students and teachers, as well as general readers interested in physics. Topics are, nevertheless, treated with a good degree of rigour … This may be the book that affords the struggling student a glimpse of the beauty that makes the serious study of physics so worthwhile.” (see full review) Professor Frank Imbusch National University of Ireland “Compared to the first edition, the mathematics demands have been reduced, and the last chapter has been expanded to include the potential detection of the Higgs boson in 2012. Historical interludes continue to be distinct from the main development, and the illustrations provide charming entertainment. The revisions make the main text, already instructive and well developed, more accessible and engaging to general audiences.”CHOICE

Book excerpt: Keeper of the Lost Cities meets Pokémon in this riveting first book in a middle grade series about a girl who embarks on a treacherous journey with her mystical animal companions to save her family—and the entire kingdom. Twelve-year-old Mia McKenna has grown up in the darkness. It’s all she’s ever known, and she finds comfort in it. Like nearly all the cities in the Kingdom of Lunis, her home of Nubis was plunged into a forever night years ago by the shadowy Reaper King—a figure now only known in nightmares, a cautionary tale warning children to stay safe inside the tall city walls. But all that changes when a mysterious cult storms Nubis, capturing everyone with the ability to protect it—including her parents, the rest of the umbra tamers, and their mystical, powerful creatures made of shadow and starlight. Now, Mia and her brother, Lucas, are the city’s only hope of survival, and Mia must learn to harness her umbra taming abilities to stand any chance of saving her city and rescuing her parents. If she can’t, she’ll lose her soul, and her family, to the Darkness forever.

Book excerpt: Photographers know that they must use highlight and shadow to create a sense of dimension in their portraits, sculpt their subject’s features, and add palpable mood in their images. However, enterprising photographers know that these uses of shadow only scratch the surface when it comes to maximizing their portrait effects. They are willing to go to surprising lengths to create dramatic shadow patterns that add texture, a sense of mystery, and compositional interest in their portraits. In this beautifully illustrated book, award-winning photographer David Beckstead showcases 180 of his most powerful images and explains how each shadow effect was created using commercial lighting, natural light, store-bought modifiers, and even common household items. Armed with the techniques outlined in this book, you will find a host of creative means to introduce and manipulate shadow patterns—both in the studio and on location—and watch your creative efforts and profits surge.
