Download or read book Ultrastructure of the Mammalian Heart written by C. E. Challice and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrastructure in Biological Systems, Volume 6: Ultrastructure of the Mammalian Heart focuses on the mammalian heart with some cross-reference to that of other vertebrates, such as birds. This book is divided into four main topics— ultrastructure of ventricular and atrial myocardium; impulse generation and conduction system of the heart; embryologic development of the mammalian heart; and ultrastructure of the innervation of the mammalian heart. In these topics, this publication specifically discusses the sarcotubular system (SR), contractile apparatus, general description of cellular morphology, and physiologic implications of cellular and fiber structure. The origin and cytodifferentiation of heart muscle cells, innervation of the sino-atrial node, and ultrastructure of the sympathetic cervical ganglion are also deliberated. This volume is a good source for biologists and students researching on the ultrastructure of the mammalian heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a growth in interest in studying the heart from the perspective of the physical sciences: mechanics, fluid flow, electromechanics. This volume is the result of a workshop held in July 1989 at the Institute for Nonlinear Sciences at the University of California at San Diego that brought together scientists and clinicians with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who shared an interest in the heart. The chapters were prepared by the invited speakers as didactic reviews of their subjects but also include the structure, mechanical properties, and function of the heart and the myocardium, electrical activity of the heart and myocardium, and mathematical models of heart function.

Download or read book The Sinus Node written by F.I. Bonke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the clinician the sinus node is more or less a hidden structure and only by indirect assessment he is able to say something about the function of this center of pacemaker activity. The morphologist, however, is able to describe the structural microscopic and even electronmicroscopic features of this structure. The only disadvantage is that, as soon as he is coming into the picture, the tissue is dead. The physiologist tries to investigate the electrophysiological behavior of the sinus node. Since there is not a human being willing to give his sinus node for research, he has to do his investigation on isolated preparations of animals. Though there are a lot of experts in the field of the sinus node they nearly never speak the same 'language'. Therefore, it was my dream to bring all those people - or at least some of them -together on a workshop. I had the feeling that it was important to organize such a meeting without an audience but only with 'experts'.
Book Synopsis Comparative Anatomy And Development by : Geoffrey Bourne
Download or read book Comparative Anatomy And Development written by Geoffrey Bourne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hearts and Heart-Like Organs, Volume 1: Comparative Anatomy and Development focuses on the complexities of the heart and heart-like organs in various species, from the invertebrates and the lower vertebrates to humans. More specifically, it investigates the hearts of worms and mollusks, urochordates and cephalochordates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and humans. Organized into 11 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of myogenic hearts and their origin, the circulatory system of the annelids, and the nervous control and pharmacology of mollusk hearts. It then discusses the phyletic relationships and circulation systems of primitive chordates, cardiovascular function in the lower vertebrates, fine structure of the heart and heart-like organs in cyclostomes, and fine structure as well as impulse propagation and ultrastructure of lymph hearts in amphibians and reptiles. It also explains the neural control of the avian heart, functional and nonfunctional determinants of mammalian cardiac anatomy, postnatal development of the heart, and anatomy of the mammalian heart. The book concludes with a chapter on the anatomy of the human pericardium and heart. This book is a valuable resource for biological and biomedical researchers concerned with the anatomy and physiology of the heart.

Book Synopsis Structure of the Autonomic Nervous System by : G. Gabella
Download or read book Structure of the Autonomic Nervous System written by G. Gabella and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conspicuous portion of the peripheral nervous system is part of the 'vegetative nervous system'; it includes all the neurons which innerv ate the viscera, salivary and lacrimal glands, the heart and blood vessels, all other smooth muscles of the body, notably the intrinsic muscles of the eye and the muscles of the hair. Only part of the system belongs to the peripheral nervous system: it has also its own nuclei and pathways in the central nervous system. The distinction between visceral and somatic functions is a very old one in our culture. With the development of neurology the notion of a widespread nervous control of body functions emerged. Winslow (1732) used the term nervi sympathici majores for those nerves, which he thought to carry about 'sympathies' and then co ordinate various viscera's functions. His was an anatomical break through, which obscured Willis' 'intercostal nerve' and Vesalius 'cranial nerve'. The notion was developed among others by John stone (1764) who arrived, with the aid of some very accurate anatomical observations, at the problem of the nervous influence on motion and sensitivity of viscera. By the end of the eighteenth century, it was clear, with Bichat (1800), that what he called 'sympa thetic nervous system' (and his pupil Reil, a few years later, 'vegeta tive nervous system ') controlled visceral functions (fa vie organique), whereas somatic functions (fa vie animafe) were under direct control from the brain and spinal cord.

Download or read book Structure written by Geoffrey Bourne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-21 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Structure and Function of Muscle, Second Edition: Volume II: Structure, Part 2 deals with various aspects of muscle structure, including physiology and microanatomy. The structure of the motor end plate is discussed, together with muscle regeneration and postmortem changes in muscle. Membranous systems in muscle fibers as well as the ultrastructural and physiological aspects of heart muscle are also considered. This volume is comprised of nine chapters and begins with an overview of how basic studies in uterine function and regulation promoted developments in reproduction, obstetrics, and regulatory biology, with emphasis on the basic mechanism of function and regulation of smooth muscles. The following chapters explore the capacitative, resistive, and syncytial properties of heart muscle; contractile structures in some Protozoa such as ciliates and gregarines; the microanatomy of smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and voluntary, somatic, or skeletal muscle; postmortem changes in the physical characteristics of muscle; and morphology of spontaneous degeneration and regeneration in skeletal muscle. The morphology, ultrastructure, and cytochemistry of the muscle spindle are also outlined. The final chapter deals with membraneous systems in muscle fibers and includes a discussion on correlation between physiology and morphology of fiber types in vertebrates and invertebrates. This book will be a useful resource for students, researchers, and practitioners of anatomy, physiology, biology, and medicine.
