Book excerpt: The rocket-firing Typhoon fighter played a pivotal role in the Allies' success in the air and on the ground in World War II, from the Normandy beachhead to the Battle of the Bulge and the final struggle for Germany. In this lively, dramatic account of aerial combat, Norman Franks describes what it was really like to fly at low level and attack trains, ships, and tanks; to fire lethal high-explosive rockets into radar or V-1 sites; or to roll over at 12,000 feet and then roar down into an inferno of flak to dive-bomb an enemy position. --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the past, present, and potential future variability of hurricanes and typhoons on a variety of timescales using newly developed approaches based on geological and archival records, in addition to more traditional approaches based on the analysis of the historical record of tropical cyclone tracks. A unique aspect of the book is that it provides an overview of the developing field of paleotempestology, which uses geological, biological, and documentary evidence to reconstruct prehistoric changes in hurricane landfall. The book also presents a particularly wide sampling of ongoing efforts to extend the best track data sets using historical material from many sources, including Chinese archives, British naval logbooks, Spanish colonial records, and early diaries from South Carolina. The book will be of particular interest to tropical meteorologists, geologists, and climatologists as well as to the catastrophe reinsurance industry, graduate students in meteorology, and public employees active in planning and emergency management.

This book was released on 2011-11-29 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) had started, the Department had contracts for two carriers with an estimated cost of £5.24 billion and delivery dates of 2016 and 2018. Decisions taken in the Review mean the UK will have no carrier aircraft capability from 2011-2020. While two carriers are still being built, only one will be converted to launch the planes that have now been selected, and the other will be mothballed. The UK will only have one operational carrier with a significantly reduced availability at sea when Carrier Strike capability is reintroduced in 2020. That carrier is being built according to the old design and will have to be modified to make it compatible with the requirements of the new aircraft: the cost of these modifications will not be known until 2012. The SDSR decision is forecast to save £3.4 billion, but only £600 million of this is cash savings while the remainder is simply deferring expenditure beyond the Department's 10 year planning horizon. The decision will lead to nine years without Carrier Strike and full capability will not be achieved until 2030. And more work will be needed to get the best and most flexible operational use from the carrier. The Committee is disappointed that the systemic issues that have appeared in its other recent defence reports continue to arise. The Committee has built on what has been said in past reports and focussed on two key areas: strategic decision-making and delivery of capabilities

Book excerpt: This report examines the past decisions taken on the Typhoon fighter aircraft and looks at improvements that the Department can make to its delivery model to get more from industry in terms of reduced costs and better performance in the future. The Department originally planned to buy 232 aircraft. However, in light of changed operational requirements and significant funding constraints arising from the pressures of the defence budget, it is now ordering 160 aircraft and will retire the 53 oldest aircraft by 2019, leaving a long-term fleet of 107 aircraft. Overall, it is costing the Department £20.2 billion, £3.5 billion more than it first expected, to buy a third fewer aircraft. This is equivalent to the purchase cost of each aircraft rising by 75%, from £72 million to £126 million. Problems with the availability of spares mean that Typhoons are not flying the hours required and the Department is forced to cannibalise parts from other aircraft to maximise the number of aircraft available on a given day. As a result, it is not fully training all its pilots. Support costs are budgeted at £13.1 billion, but could be as high as £16.6 billion across the life of the aircraft. The Department has identified potential savings of £3.5 billion to keep support costs within budget. The Department will need to both reduce the cost and increase the timeliness of future collaborative spares and repairs contracts. At present, the contracts do little to incentivise better industry performance and to penalise failure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1918, the Royal Air Force became the first major independent air force in the world. Formed to serve a strategic need in the most intensive war that Britain had then fought, the RAF continued in the inter-war era to play a key role in the political and diplomatic world, and in defending the Empire. During the Second World War, the RAF was pivotal in defending Britain from invasion in the Battle of Britain, and then in leading the assault on the Axis powers, most notably through the contentious bomber offensive against Germany. In the post-war world, the RAF adapted and developed into a force to meet the needs of the United Kingdom during the Cold War, the retreat from Empire, and most recently in the move to coalition warfare against low intensity threats, all against a backdrop of diminishing resources and shifting priorities. This is the story of the RAF over the first century of its existence: how it has confronted the many challenges and threats it has faced -- from the Luftwaffe in 1940, through the spectre of nuclear holocaust in the Cold War, to the fight against terrorism in the 21st century -- and how it has contributed to the defence of the United Kingdom throughout that period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boeing B-29 Superfortress lived an operational life of only 26 years, but what a life it was. The introduction to this book provides basic information on the physical plane: dimensions, specs, leading particulars and operational usages. Then an exhaustive day-by-day chronology of the B-29 is presented--from the earliest designs in 1934 through thousands of missions and aircraft events in World War II and Korea to the 1960 retirement of the last operational B-29. The book also includes an extensive glossary and three appendices, which provide a discussion of the general anatomy of a mission, a sample of operational voice or radio codes used in 1945, and a guide to (very unofficial) aircraft names.

Book excerpt: Beauty manifests itself in nature, and that beauty inspires love, kindness, and goodwill. In The Morning Echo, author Javed Naseer explores a plethora of subjects revolving around nature and science and the role they play in life. Collected from his life experiences from his early childhood after leaving India for New Orleans to adulthood, the essays are based on experiments and speculation as well as mathematics, derivation, and extrapolation. These essays share insights on a wide array of topics, discussing how India emerged as a free democratic republic after dethroning British from positions of authority in the Indian subcontinent; presenting a brief introduction to a ruling democratic government and its methods of implementing justice; and describing the Apollo 11 mission to the moon and the first man, Neil A. Armstrong, on the moon. Naseer also delves into the issues involving the ever-growing world population and the pollution crisis that plagues our planet; brings to light one of the cheapest resources of energy, hydropower; lists the top ten universities of the world; and reviews Einsteins Special Relativity and Newtons Laws of Motion Covering widely diverse subjects, The Morning Echo communicates valuable insight as to the nature of human life, the world around us, and how we must act in order to survive the calamities and the brutalities of time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The official novelization of the upcoming sci-fi blockbuster Pacific Rim from visionary director Guillermo del Toro! When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse. "I wanted to make not a war movie, but an adventure movie, with a huge, romantic sense of adventure, a sense of grandeur, and operatic battles..." - Guillermo Del Toro
