Book excerpt: This book, “Two Voices Forever”, is about the life and artwork of two Russian artists, Yuri and Elizabeth Grachev, husband and wife, who emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1977, finally settling in New York City in 1978. They left their native land to be free and to escape the Soviet world governed by the police and military regime. This book provides an interesting insight into their life, both in the Soviet Union and in the United States, and a glimpse of their struggle as artists in the old and new world. The book also includes memoires, letters, interviews, photographs, and a substantial number of reproductions of Yuri’s drawings and paintings as well as of works by the author – Elizabeth Grachev. It is a unique opportunity to read the story of these two artists who shared such a deep sense of togetherness for 37 years. Theirs is a story of true love and unity between two people, and in this book Elizabeth Grachev recounts and records the extraordinary life she shared with Yuri, a life to be remembered for generations to come.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Katherine Arden returns with another creepy, spine-tingling adventure in the critically acclaimed Small Spaces Quartet. Having survived sinister scarecrows and the malevolent smiling man in Small Spaces, newly minted best friends Ollie, Coco, and Brian are ready to spend a relaxing winter break skiing together with their parents at Mount Hemlock Resort. But when a snowstorm sets in, causing the power to flicker out and the cold to creep closer and closer, the three are forced to settle for hot chocolate and board games by the fire. Ollie, Coco, and Brian are determined to make the best of being snowed in, but odd things keep happening. Coco is convinced she has seen a ghost, and Ollie is having nightmares about frostbitten girls pleading for help. Then Mr. Voland, a mysterious ghost hunter, arrives in the midst of the storm to investigate the hauntings at Hemlock Lodge. Ollie, Coco, and Brian want to trust him, but Ollie's watch, which once saved them from the smiling man, has a new cautionary message: BEWARE. With Mr. Voland's help, Ollie, Coco, and Brian reach out to the dead voices at Mount Hemlock. Maybe the ghosts need their help--or maybe not all ghosts can or should be trusted. Dead Voices is a terrifying follow-up to Small Spaces with thrills and chills galore and the captive foreboding of a classic ghost story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near the end of his second term as president of France, Francois Mitterrand decided to talk openly about his life, both personal and political. President for fourteen years, longer than anyone else in the history of the French Republic, Mitterrand was interested not in constructing an elaborate memorial to himself in words but in leaving behind a living testament. He therefore turned to someone whom he knew and trusted, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, a close friend of many years, to join him in a vibrant, vigorous exchange. The topics they discuss in these pages are childhood, faith, war, power, writing, and those moments - however and whenever they arrive - that shape and sometimes define us as people. Mitterrand and Wiesel's dialogue is spontaneous, thoughtful, lyrical, blunt, far-reaching, and candid, whether it involves controversial moments in Mitterrand's political career, Wiesel's memories of Auschwitz, the importance of family and religion in their lives, or simply their favorite books and walks. Here is an unobstructed view into the lives and times of two of the greatest figures of conscience of our century, an inspiring memoir in two voices.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • For anyone who wants to learn a foreign language, this is the method that will finally make the words stick. “A brilliant and thoroughly modern guide to learning new languages.”—Gary Marcus, cognitive psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller Guitar Zero At thirty years old, Gabriel Wyner speaks six languages fluently. He didn’t learn them in school—who does? Rather, he learned them in the past few years, working on his own and practicing on the subway, using simple techniques and free online resources—and here he wants to show others what he’s discovered. Starting with pronunciation, you’ll learn how to rewire your ears and turn foreign sounds into familiar sounds. You’ll retrain your tongue to produce those sounds accurately, using tricks from opera singers and actors. Next, you’ll begin to tackle words, and connect sounds and spellings to imagery rather than translations, which will enable you to think in a foreign language. And with the help of sophisticated spaced-repetition techniques, you’ll be able to memorize hundreds of words a month in minutes every day. This is brain hacking at its most exciting, taking what we know about neuroscience and linguistics and using it to create the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn a foreign language in the spare minutes of your day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated multidisciplinary study addresses interpretations of the Genesis creation story in Paradise Lost and other seventeenth-century English poems and in the visual arts from the Middle Ages through the Reformation. It considers poems, visual images, and music concerned with divine and human creativity and interprets these works as salutary examples for the creation of the arts and the preservation of the earth. The central topic is the daily work of body or mind of Adam and Eve in Paradise Lost as primal artists and caretakers of nature before the Fall, developing the arts of language, music, liturgy, and government, discovering the rudiments of a technology harmless to the biosphere, and dressing and keeping a garden that is an epitome of the whole earth. These unfallen arts promote awareness of the complex harmonies of creation and potentially of civilization: an awareness that is not only linear or binary but radiant and multiple; not only monodic but also choral. McColley argues that northern European visual artists and seventeenth-century English poets reimagined Eden in order to re-Edenize the imagination as a source of ethical and ecological healing. The best-known depictions of Adam and Eve in the visual arts, which focus on the drama of the all, depart from a widespread but undervalued tradition that more celebratory and regenerative and less susceptible to misogynous interpretation. This tradition includes the neglected topos of original righteousness and contributes to what we would now call ecological awareness. Poets allied to this view foster Edenic consciousness by creating a Paradisal language that weaves form, sound, image, metaphor, concept, and experience as closely as nature weaves life, and so exercises our sense of connections

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is fasting 1000 consecutive days possible? Not fasting day and night without any food and water, no, that's not possible; but fasting for over a thousand consecutive days from 15 to 17 hours a day is possible. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be the person to do this. But why fast 1000 days? What was the reason behind it all? I wish the answer to why a person would fast 1000 days was simple, but it's not. The absolute truth is that I never intended to fast 1000 days. It never even entered into my mind. Had it, I know I would have rejected the idea. I never thought it was possible. I didn't even think 100 days was possible until GOD blessed me to do it. It was not until I had fasted around 700 days that I began to believe 1000 days of fasting was possible. That's when I prayed and said to God, "Lord, since you have blessed me to fast 700 days, I have only one request now. Lord, bless me to go 1000 days." The Lord heard my request and granted it. During my fast I kept wondering and saying, "Lord, why? Why won't you give me a release from this fast?" It was not until I had fasted 1000 days that God revealed the reason why He had me fasting all those days. God spoke to my mind and said, "Vernard, I didn't have you fasting for `you', I had you fasting for people who need Me all over the world." So I was not fasting for me, I was fasting for you --people who are broken, people who have been wounded and bruised, and people who need God to move in their behalf.
