Book excerpt: This study was directed toward the investigation of the difference in recognition thresholds between taboo and neutral words with special consideration being given to the response suppression problem. It was hypothesized that: z) a perceptual defense process operates which results in higher recognition thresholds for taboo as compared to neutral words; and, b) response suppression operates in such a manner that the recognition thresholds for both taboo and neutral words are heightened in perceptual defense experiments which employ the "dirty word" paradigm. Two different methods were used to obtain recognition thresholds. In the verbal report method, tachistoscopic exposures of increasing duration were made until S wrote the word correctly on two consecutive exposures. In the checking method, S was provided with a pleasant-unpleasant scale and had only to check the emotional connotation the word had for him. He was given tachistoscopic exposures of increasing duration until he had made five consecutive checks in the same column. The duration of exposure during which S wrote the words correctly for the second consecutive time and the duration of exposure during which S made his second consecutive check in the same column on the pleasant-unpleasant scale were employed as recognition thresholds in the two methods respectively. It was assumed that response suppression would operate in the verbal report condition but not in the checking condition. On the basis of this assumption and the two hypotheses listed above, the following predictions were made: 1) the recognition thresholds for the taboo words in both the verbal report and checking conditions will be higher than the recognition thresholds for neutral words; and, 2) the recognition threshold for both taboo and neutral words will be higher in the verbal report condition than in the checking condition. In an effort to control for the variables of word frequency and relevancy of taboo words, a more comprehensive index of word familiarity than the Thorndike-Lorge word count was used and the words employed were pre-tested for emotionality to provide an independent criterion of their affectivity. In order to investigate the contradictory findings concerning the relative recognition thresholds of pleasant and neutral words, the present study employed pleasant as well as unpleasant words. Two groups of college students were used as Ss, 11 being assigned to the verbal report condition and 16 to the checking condition. The findings of the present study confirmed the two predictions made. It was also found that the recognition thresholds for positive words tended to be lower than the thresholds for the neutral control words. A relationship was discovered between the amount of response suppression exhibited toward a word and the word's familiarity.

Book excerpt: Theorists are increasingly arguing that it is fruitful to approach anxiety from the cognitive perspective, and the empirical evidence supports that contention. The cognitive perspective is also adopted in this book, but the approach represents a development and extension of earlier ones. For example, most previous theories and research have been based on anxiety either in clinical or in normal groups. In contrast, one of the central themes of this book is that there are great advantages to be gained from a joint consideration of clinical and normal anxiety. Another theme of this book is that it is of major importance to establish whether or not there is a cognitive vulnerability factor which is associated with at least some forms of clinical anxiety. It is argued (with supporting evidence) that there is a latent cognitive vulnerability factor for generalized anxiety disorder which manifests itself under stressful conditions. This vulnerability factor is characterized by hypervigilance, and is found predominantly in normals high in the personality dimension of trait anxiety. The scope of the book extends to the effects of anxiety on performance and to the phenomenon of worry, which is regarded as the cognitive component of anxiety. In both cases, a new theoretical framework is presented.
