Book excerpt: Acceding to the wish of my Publishers that the following pages should be included in a certain well-known series, I have termed them "Chats on Old Miniatures," but confess that I consider the title somewhat of a misnomer, inasmuch as I have been accustomed to regard "a chat" as a conversation between two or more persons interested in a given subject; whereas in this little volume it is obvious that I have done all the talking. In the interval which has elapsed since my larger works appeared the most important event in connection with the subject of Miniatures is, in my opinion, the Exhibition of Works of Art of the Eighteenth Century at the French National Library in 1906. The concluding chapter of this book gives the impressions afforded by that extremely interesting and instructive Exhibition. In the hope that they will be of use to the general reader, I have amplified my references to the public collections of Miniatures in this country, especially those at Hertford House and the Jones Collection, so rich in the works of Petitot. Miss E. M. Foster has been of much service in revising the proofs and passing this work through the press. I have only to add one word, and that relates to the illustrations. I am fortunate in being able to put before my readers so large a selection of choice examples of the art of miniature painting. This I owe to the generosity of the owners of the originals, to whom I desire once again to express my indebtedness and thanks.

Book excerpt: EVOLVE OR DIE!All Things Zombie won the Origins Award for Best Miniatures Game in 2005. From then until now, gamers have changed and All Things Zombie has changed with them.************Want a game where all you do is run around the table and kill Zombies? If you do, then All Things Zombie - Evolution is not for you. Think of all the great and not so great Zombie movies and television series. Remember how many Zombies the heroes killed? I'm betting you don't, but I bet you remember how they interacted with other survivors and how they finally overcame the obstacles in their way. In short, you remember the Story. And that's what All Things Zombie - Evolution is all about, the Story; your Story. All Things Zombie - Evolution sweeps you up and sticks you right in the middle of a catastrophic zombie outbreak. Who you are when the outbreak occurs is just as important as where you are. Because unlike other zombie games, where the zombies have been around for a while, you won't be able to tell the humans from the zombies until maybe it's too late. Because it's all happening to you just like it would on Day One. Confusion, chaos, and lack of information are just some of the challenges you'll face when the world starts to crumble. Will you have what it takes to survive the first 30 days? THEN WHAT?All Things Zombie - Evolution starts on the first day of the Outbreak, but then let's you continue your life, building your very own future. It's a game where every detail has been covered, as you first escape the soulless creatures that threaten you, then hunt them down and take back what's yours. On the way you'll find that your most dangerous enemies aren't the zombies, but are your neighbors and sometimes your old friends. Play All Things Zombie - Evolution solo, cooperatively against the game, or head to head against one another. Play it as a one off game or part of an ongoing campaign. Play it on the Tabletop or on the Battle Boards we've included. It doesn't matter which way you play it, as the goal of All Things Zombie - Evolution is to rebuild the world, as you knew it; except maybe this time with you in charge.Inside you'll find: Counters and two 8" x 10" Battle Boards. Three classes - Survivor, Ganger, or Militia, each with different goals and opportunites. Attributes, Skills, and more, that are used to define your Characters and make them unique.A light-book keeping Campaign System to reward you when you do well and punish you when you don't.A variety of Zombies, from the old school Shamblers to Smarties and Ragers.Pre- generated scenarios that can be played alone or played together to build your Story.A fully populated Post-Apocalyptic town for you to adventure in.All this and much more. And we didn't even mention the Werewolves, Aliens or Vampires. All Things Zombie ...Still THE Zombie game. Please note that the maps and counters for this book are printed inside in black and white. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned and illustrious tales of King Arthur, his knights and the Round Table pervade all European vernaculars, as well as the Latin tradition. Arthurian narrative material, which had originally been transmitted in oral culture, began to be inscribed regularly in the twelfth century, developing from (pseudo-)historical beginnings in the Latin chronicles of "historians" such as Geoffrey of Monmouth into masterful literary works like the romances of Chrétien de Troyes. Evidently a big hit, Arthur found himself being swiftly translated, adapted and integrated into the literary traditions of almost every European vernacular during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. This Handbook seeks to showcase the European character of Arthurian romance both past and present. By working across national philological boundaries, which in the past have tended to segregate the study of Arthurian romance according to language, as well as by exploring primary texts from different vernaculars and the Latin tradition in conjunction with recent theoretical concepts and approaches, this Handbook brings together a pioneering and more complete view of the specifically European context of Arthurian romance, and promotes the more connected study of Arthurian literature across the entirety of its European context.

Book excerpt: I.B.Tauris in association with the Iran Heritage Foundation Iran's rich cultural heritage has been shaped over many centuries by its rich and eventful history. This impressive book, which assembles contributions by some of the world's most eminent historians, art historians and other scholars of the Iranian world, explores the history of the country through the prism of Persian literature, art and culture. The result is a seminal work which illuminates important, yet largely neglected, aspects of Medieval and Early Modern Iran and the Middle East. Its scope, from the era of Ferdowsi, Iran's national epic poet and the author of the Shahnameh to the period of the Mongols, Timurids, Safavids, Zands and Qajars, examines the interaction between mythology, history, historiography, poetry, painting and craftwork in the long narrative of the Persianate experience. As such, Ferdowsi, the Mongols and the History of Iran is essential reading and a reference point for students and scholars of Iranian history, Persian literature and the arts of the Islamic World.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada has seen the study of Islamic art and archeology grow steadily over the last five decades, with growth in research and teaching across numerous Canadian universities as well as important collections of Islamic art and archaeological materials, most notably at the Royal Ontario Museum and the Aga Khan Museum. Made for the Eye of One Who Sees uncovers the contributions of scholars and museum curators at Canadian institutions to current scholarship on Islamic art. Employing a wide range of approaches and theoretical perspectives, contributors cover topics from across the Islamic world dating from the eighth century to the present. Subjects include the iconography of architectural design and decoration, the role of Qur’anic inscriptions, the representation of symbolic animals in sculpture, and the interpretation of Persian manuscript painting. The book also juxtaposes modern and contemporary worlds, providing insightful reflections on the early history of the Islamic collections at the Royal Ontario Museum, Matisse’s creative encounter with Byzantine and Islamic visual culture, and the ongoing dialogue between new media and the traditional concepts underpinning Islamic art. Bringing together recent scholarship on Islamic art, architecture, and archaeology, Made for the Eye of One Who Sees provides an overview of the important contributions Canada is making to this rich and evolving field of study.

Book excerpt: Drawing on the poetics of intertextuality and profiting from the more recent concepts of cultural mobility and permeability between cultures in the early modern period, this volume’s tripartite structure considers the relationship between Renaissance material arts, theatre, and emblems as an integrated and intermedial genre, explores the use and function of Italian visual culture in Shakespeare’s oeuvre, and questions the appropriation of the arts in the production of the drama of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. An afterword, a rich bibliography of primary and secondary literature, and a detailed Index round off the volume.
