Book Synopsis Paper Stories - Paper and Book History in Early Modern Europe by : Silvia Hufnagel
Download or read book Paper Stories - Paper and Book History in Early Modern Europe written by Silvia Hufnagel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-04-26 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This peer-reviewed conference volume examines paper and material aspects of the written word in early modern Europe. The collection is designed around three thematic strands, based on the lifecycle of handwritten documents and manuscripts and printed books: first, production of paper, second production of books and manuscripts and third, trade and exchange, and ownership of manuscripts and books. By tracing the history of paper, books and collections through case studies of historically important objects, the authors identify agents and hotspots of production, trade and ownership from both centres and peripheries of Europe from the late Middle Ages until the beginning of industrialisation. They thereby address material aspects of documents, manuscripts and books, as well as object biography, from an interdisciplinary viewpoint. By doing so this volume provides insight into actual practices of the past and the material history of written texts.

Book Synopsis Reflections of Roman Imperialisms by : Marko A. Janković
Download or read book Reflections of Roman Imperialisms written by Marko A. Janković and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume provide invaluable insights into the results of different interactions between “Romans” and Others. Articles dealing with cultural changes within and outside the borders of Roman Empire highlight the idea that those very changes had different results and outcomes depending on various social, political, economic, geographical and chronological factors. Most of the contributions here focus on the issues of what it means to be Roman in different contexts, and show that the concept and idea of Roman-ness were different for the various populations that interacted with Romans through several means of communication, including political alliances, wars, trade, and diplomacy. The volume also covers a huge geographical area, from Britain, across Europe to the Near East and the Caucasus, but also provides information on the Roman Empire through eyes of foreigners, such as the ancient Chinese.

Book Synopsis Between East and West by : R. A. Donkin
Download or read book Between East and West written by R. A. Donkin and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 2003 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to & including the Age of Discoveries, the wealth of the East was thought in Europe to consist primarily of spices & aromatics. Cloves, nutmeg, mace, & sandalwood all were thought to come from a few small islands in easternmost Indonesia, which no European reached before 1500. Yet supplies of these luxury products were reaching China, India, western Asia, & the Mediterranean lands more than a thousand years earlier. This study of Moluccan spices opens with their natural history & nomenclature, & the discovery of the Islands by Europeans near the opposing (& controversial) limits of Spanish & Portuguese jurisdiction. Donkin traces the expanding interest & long-distance trade in cloves, nutmeg, & sandalwood, first to India & then to the adjacent Arabo-Persian world. The medieval West & China lay on the margins of diffusion, the former in touch with the Levant, the latter with the trading world of South East Asia.
