Download or read book Two Desperados written by Susan Lowell and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-14 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the George Garrett Fiction Prize, Susan Lowell’s Two Desperados is a collection of southwest-flavored stories that feature a blacksmith, several smugglers, a mule, a jaguar, a runaway groom, a murderess, a witch, a basket weaver, a Gremlin, three cowboys, and a ghost. Settings range from a grand university library to a construction site, from an apocalyptic dream world to the coyote-haunted banks of the Rio Grande. A novella called “Captain Death” traces a journalist’s odyssey along the U.S.-Mexico border. Another novella, “Two Desperados,” follows a prodigal daughter’s return to her eccentric Arizona home. And although they grapple with love and death, many members of this motley gang still manage to find sparkles in the darkness and a few crazy moments of grace. These eighteen stories play a few games with traditional short story form, but by and large they remain in the realism camp—yet it is realism tweaked or enlivened with an occasional sprinkle of magic or a small electric zap. In length they range from a few words to many pages, from the brief text of a bumper sticker to a full-scale novella. In the words of Apuleius, author of The Golden Ass: “Reader! Pay attention! You’re going to enjoy yourself!”
Book Synopsis Outlaw Tales of the Old West: Fifty True Stories of Desperados, Crooks, Criminals, and Bandits by : Erin H. Turner
Download or read book Outlaw Tales of the Old West: Fifty True Stories of Desperados, Crooks, Criminals, and Bandits written by Erin H. Turner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of fifty outlaw tales includes well-knowns such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Frank and Jesse James, Belle Starr (and her dad), and Pancho Villa, along with a fair smattering of women, organized crime bosses, smugglers, and of course the usual suspects: highwaymen, bank and train robbers, cattle rustlers, snake-oil salesmen, and horse thieves. Men like Henry Brown and Burt Alvord worked on both sides of the law either at different times of their lives or simultaneously. Clever shyster Soapy Smith and murderer Martin Couk survived by their wits, while the outlaw careers of the dimwitted DeAutremont brothers and bigmouthed Diamondfield Jack were severely limited by their intellect, or lack thereof. Nearly everyone in these pages was motivated by greed, revenge, or a lethal mixture of the two. The most bloodthirsty of the bunch, such as the heartless (and, some might argue, soulless) Annie Cook and trigger-happy Augustine Chacón, surely had evil written into their very DNA.

Book excerpt: 'What makes this book unique among books of similar size and scope is that when the author decided to include something in the book, he has treated it in a way similar to the common practice in textbooks, with very detailed and reader-friendly explanations, fully worked-out examples, and even numerous exercises … There are no prerequisites beyond second-semester calculus and the book can be used for self-study as well as in the classroom.'CHOICEWritten by international award-winning probability expert Henk Tijms, Basic Probability: What Every Math Student Should Know presents the essentials of elementary probability. The book is primarily written for high school and college students learning about probability for the first time. In a highly accessible way, a modern treatment of the subject is given with emphasis on conditional probability and Bayesian probability, on striking applications of the Poisson distribution, and on the interface between probability and computer simulation. In modern society, it is important to be able to critically evaluate statements of a probabilistic nature presented in the media in order to make informed judgments. A basic knowledge of probability theory is indispensable to logical thinking and statistical literacy. The book provides this knowledge and illustrates it with numerous everyday situations.

Book Synopsis Jeff, the Roofer, Reflections of a Double Negative Life by : Jeffrey Poppy
Download or read book Jeff, the Roofer, Reflections of a Double Negative Life written by Jeffrey Poppy and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writer Jeffrey Poppy writes a stunningly candid book based on his life experiences in Jeff the Roofer: Reflections of a Double Negative Life. Poppy was born into life with drama-as a newborn he had to have a blood transfusion. Growing up with an abusive father, he relived the abuse by self-destruction through his teenage years and into adulthood. Poppy played out his destruction in various ways-a near death gunshot wound, alcoholism, drugs, three failed marriages, six trips to rehab and then homeless. All avenues led to the same place-his own inner demons, until he entered an in-house treatment center. Upon release, Poppy traveled to Amsterdam and met his muse who inspired his creative poetry. Poppy entered a song-writing contest, won second place and traveled back to the United States landing in Nashville, Tennessee. He recorded 42 of his own songs-all inspired by his tenuous and amazing journey that finally released his demons and enabled him to find his own path. Jeff the Roofer: Reflections of a Double Negative Life begins with the song, The Times, that illustrates his quests and questions of life's meaning for him, and the song, Just Another Day takes him on the journey from inner strife to see freedom and triumph over self- destructive and abusive ways. Interwoven with heart wrenching storytelling are 28 compositions that chronicle his unsteady journey to recovery. This beautifully descriptive book is a compelling and inspiring narration of prose and lyrics that expertly encapsulate one man's escape from the cycle of abuse and self-destruction. Jeffrey Poppy is a writer, poet, songwriter, and craftsman. Mr. Poppy is currently writing his second novel and lives with his beloved dog in Durant, Oklahoma. Download or read book Called for Duty written by Sgt. Randy S. Caswell and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written for a target audience, the men and women in law enforcement. Mature subject matter and graphic details are included in my writing. It should not be read by persons under the age of 18. This autobiography is based on some true events, however, has been fictionalized and all persons appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real people, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. Lets just say human behavior in general finds it hard to keep things to themselves. Secrets are broken. Someone else could have wrote this book but to my knowledge, nobody did. So this book was written from my perspective, experiences, and interpretation of public testimony.
Book Synopsis The Seventh House by : Steven Joseph Sinopoli
Download or read book The Seventh House written by Steven Joseph Sinopoli and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The headlines read in a local newspaper "Husband shoots wife and lover in a motel." The copy went on to say, "Last night police apprehended a jealous husband who broke into a motel room on Route 3. The names have not been released." Then Ken called me a few days later and said he was alright! The moral of this story is very simple when you have a chart that does not call for marriage or a partner, it is better to be on your own. In this case Shaun and Sandy were not cut out for marriage. Their charts illustrated that they should be a singles act. Both were strong competitors when it came to business. "I cannot tell you because you are in limbo and need to learn more about your stars. Unfortunately there is a special set of rules that apply to you. In this lifetime you are meant to be a vehicle for others and, if you acquire that sacred knowledge, your life's journey will be fulfilled with rewards." I could tell Gail was despicable, corrupt and rotten to the core. How was I going to handle her when she sat in front of me for her reading? First of all she would not have been sitting in front of me if she had had to pay for it. Second, she was there to find out if I would be able to pick up on her scheme to extort money. Man's ego constantly challenges the theory of free will. He would like to think he is master of his destiny, but are we? The reader should stop for a moment and think about his or her own life and the many changes that altered their direction because of an unanticipated event. That is karma in the making.

Download or read book Connor Race written by Michael Curran and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connor Race: The Tontine Plot follows the perilous exploits of American Security Agency (ASA) covert operative, Connor Race, and a cast of characters as they encounter deadly adversaries bent on the destruction of Shade Cassedy, the alluring, spoiled, twenty-four-year-old who has no clue of her planned demise. As Race moves across the shadowy landscapes of intrigue, betrayal, potential romance and clandestine operations, he knows one thing for certain, a self-evident truth that requires no proof""the more you win, the closer you come to losing. Are Middle East extremists responsible for the murderous attempts on the young lady's life because of her father's agency duties or is there a brutal home-grown scheme of greed to exterminate her? Ordinarily, this type of assignment is not part of the ASA's raison d'être, but there are mitigating circumstances as to why she has come under the guardianship of the agency. What initially is assumed to be a "babysitting" assignment is anything but. Experience the initial fast-paced violent pursuit on Bolivia's high-altitude Death Road, and the eventual deadly conspiracy in the southern mountain vistas of New Mexico to murder Ms. Cassedy, who unwittingly possesses a long-buried family secret dating back to the Revolutionary War. The cryptic word, Tontine, is introduced to the narrative and has been obscurely identified with her family. Is she a direct descendant to one of the Founders or is she related to a financial strategy from the same period? The mysterious director of the ASA, Mr. Marco, periodically hints he knows why she must live and have children. Is there some definite esoteric destiny she is meant to fulfill? The exciting finale occurs at the Gran Quivira 1650 Spanish ruins in isolated southern New Mexico. This work is not formulaic and is not meant to follow familiar pattern dynamics.
