Book excerpt: This anthology of essays maps the divergent issues that have become relevant in contemporary Indian English poetry and drama. By providing a clear idea about the new themes, techniques and methods used by the Indian English poets and playwrights to address the issues emerging in the changing socio-cultural scenario, particularly during the post-globalization period, the essays offer insightful observations on canon formation and its reception. It is high time to consider afresh whether the canons of Indian English poetry and drama have widened their scope to include innovative forms of writing or whether they have evolved significantly to generate novel perspectives. These questions, which are linked with the issue of canon formation and its reception are intricately woven into the fabric of these essays. This anthology will respond to the scholarly interests of inquisitive students, research scholars and academics in the field of Indian English literature.

Book Synopsis The Oxford History of Poetry in English by : Julia Boffey
Download or read book The Oxford History of Poetry in English written by Julia Boffey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford History of Poetry in English is designed to offer a fresh, multi-voiced, and comprehensive analysis of 'poetry': from Anglo-Saxon culture through contemporary British, Irish, American, and Global culture, including English, Scottish, and Welsh poetry, Anglo-American colonial and post-colonial poetry, and poetry in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, India, Africa, Asia, and other international locales. The series both synthesizes existing scholarship and presents cutting-edge research, employing a global team of expert contributors for each of the fourteen volumes. This volume explores the developing range of English verse in the century after the death of Chaucer in 1400, years that saw both change and consolidation in traditions of poetic writing in English in the regions of Britain. Chaucer himself was an important shaping presence in the poetry of this period, providing a stimulus to imitation and to creative expansion of the modes he had favoured. In addition to assessing his role, this volume considers a range of literary factors significant to the poetry of the century, including verse forms, literary language, translation, and the idea of the author. It also signals features of the century's history that were important for the production of English verse: responses to wars at home and abroad, dynastic uncertainty, and movements towards religious reform, as well as technological innovations such as the introduction of printing, which brought influential changes to the transmission and reception of verse writing. The volume is shaped to include chapters on the contexts and forms of poetry in English, on the important genres of verse produced in the period, on some of the fifteenth-century's major writers (Lydgate, Hoccleve, Dunbar, and Henryson), and a consideration of the influence of the verse of this century on what was to follow.

Book Synopsis Medieval to Renaissance in English Poetry by : A. C. Spearing
Download or read book Medieval to Renaissance in English Poetry written by A. C. Spearing and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985-09-05 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a critical book to study in depth the transition from the 'medieval' to the 'Renaissance' periods in English literature. What exactly, in a literary context, do those terms designate? Mr Spearing argues that, far from being fixed determinants, they demand careful critical reappraisal. He rewrites the literary history of the period from Chaucer to the early Spenser in a way that puts emphasis on the importance of Chaucer's influence on a tradition which in many important respects began with him. Many literary and cultural qualities, normally considered 'Renaissance', can be seen to have their origins, so far as the English tradition is concerned, in Chaucer's contacts with Italian culture. This book shows how Chaucer can be regarded as a Renaissance poet whose work was medievalised by his admiring successors. Traditions other than the Chaucerian are examined in this light, and the author engages with the larger problems of literary history through the detailed analysis of specimen texts.
