In this, as in the preceding volume, the chief place is given to certain congregations connected with the United Presbyterian Church, around which are gathered illustrations of rural and village life in the south-east of Scotland, principally in the 18th century. The congregation of Midlem, though not now connected with the denomination, was for many years a noted colony of zealous Anti-Burghers. All the congregations described in this volume, with the exception of Lauder, are situated in village or rural districts; to have included the larger towns would have unduly added to the size of the work. Some fresh historical and biographical information relating to the Established Church in different localities is included in the volume. To that Church belonged the Rev.
