Book excerpt: He was a half-breed, one-of-a-kind, Texas Ranger, but he didnt know it. Suffering from a head wound he had lost all memory of who or what he was. Found bleeding and half dead by hands from the Box Bar B, they had taken him to the ranch and in time his body healed, but not his mind. Searching for his identity, he followed clues that lead him up into the Northwest Territories, home of the Arapaho and Sioux Nations, where tensions were high. The Nations were gearing up to defend their homes and their way of life. Ex-soldiers, refugees from the Civil War, having their lives torn apart with nothing left, were migrating west looking for opportunities. One opportunity took the form of attempting to seize a ranch that lay within the Nations hunting ground, unawares of old standing treaties. Bank robbers out of Texas and on the run, were having serious moral conflicts and had chosen sides. This volatile mix of conflicting emotions, fear, greed, and opposing forces was what this young man, who didnt even know his own name, but remembered the name of his horse Jinx, was

Book excerpt: The great American Westerns can be profoundly meaningful when read metaphorically. More than mere shoot 'em up entertainment, they are an essential part of a vibrant, evolving national mythology. Like other versions of the archetypal Hero's Journey, these films are filled with insights about life, love, nature, society, ethics, beauty and what it means to be human, and are key to understanding American culture. Part film guide, part historical survey, this book explores the mythic and artistic elements in 52 great Westerns--some orthodox, some subversive--from the genre's first half-century. Each film is given detailed critical analysis, from the earliest silent movies to Golden Age classics like Red River (1948), High Noon (1952) and Shane (1953).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beads made of amber and glass are the most common type of object found in Anglo-Saxon graves, yet relatively little is known about them. In this well illustrated study, Birte Brugmann analyses a sample of 32,000 beads from graves of the 5th to 7th centuries. She creates a new typology of Anglo-Saxon glass bead types, taking into consideration materials, manufacturing techniques, decoration, colours and shapes of beads. She considers questions of bead production and bead fashion across Anglo-Saxon regions, how far they were influenced by continental and Scandinavian bead fashions, and offers a chronological framework for the Anglo-Saxon finds. Her distribution analysis suggests that some of the beads were manufactured in England, while others were imported from or via the continent. Brugmann concludes that differences in regional Anglo-Saxon bead fashions were not as pronounced as differences in contemporary brooch fashion, and that the beads therefore can contribute to a cross-regional phasing of Anglo-Saxon graves.

Book excerpt: Explore Twisted, the Python-based event-driven networking engine, and review several of its most popular application projects. It is written by community leaders who have contributed to many of the projects covered, and share their hard-won insights and experience. Expert Twisted starts with an introduction to event-driven programming, explaining it in the context of what makes Twisted unique. It shows how Twisted's design emphasizes testability as a solution to common challenges of reliability, debugging, and start-to-finish causality that are inherent in event-driven programming. It also explains asynchronous programming, and the importance of functions, deferreds, and coroutines. It then uses two popular applications, treq and klein, to demonstrate calling and writing Web APIs with Twisted. The second part of the book dives into Twisted projects, in each case explaining how the project fits into the Twisted ecosystem and what it does, and offers several examples to bring readers up to speed, with pointers to additional resources for more depth. Examples include using Twisted with Docker, as a WSGI container, for file sharing, and more. This book was released on 2023-11-25 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conspiracies and Conspiracy Theory in the Age of Trump stands out in the burgeoning literature on conspiracism with its call for political scientists to analyze not only “conspiracy theory” as political pathology but conspiracies themselves as political behavior symbiotically related to moral hazards and other forces unleashed by dark money, disinformation, changing technologies, and globalization. This new updated edition extends this analysis to the belief by many Americans that the 2020 election was stolen, resistance to social measures to counter the Covid epidemic, attempts by Trump and his allies to “stop the steal,” and the resulting mob insurrection at the Capitol on January 6. We likely will see both conspiracism and actual conspiracies play a greater role due to institutional decay in American politics. For this reason, political scientists need to analyse and theorize the role of conspiracies in politics—why they prosper and fail, how conspiracies may inflect political outcomes, what relationship they bear to social forces unleashed by great economic and social change.
