Book excerpt: Samuel Lipschutz was born in Hungary in 1863 and emigrated to New York in 1880. He joined the Manhattan and New York chess clubs, and soon became champion of the latter, representing it at the British Chess Association Congress in London in 1886. Naturalized in 1888, he was the highest-placed American in the Sixth American Chess Congress the following year. In 1892 he defeated Jackson Showalter to become American champion. Suffering from tuberculosis in 1895, he lost a championship match to Showalter. Searching for a cure, he went to Germany in 1904 and died there late the following year. This book gives an account of Lipschutz's chess career, life and milieu and addresses questions surrounding his first name, his periods away from New York and misconceptions concerning the American championship. There are 249 games included.

Book excerpt: The controversial history of the attack submarine—and the story of its colorful creator, John Philip Holland—that reveals how this imaginative invention changed the face of modern warfare. From Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea to The Hunt for Red October, readers the world over have demonstrated an enduring fascination with travel under the sea. Yet the riveting story behind the invention of the submarine—an epic saga of genius, persistence, ruthlessness, and deceit—is almost completely unknown. Like Henry Ford and the Wright brothers, John Philip Holland was completely self-taught, a brilliant man raised in humble circumstances, earning his living as a schoolteacher and choirmaster. But all the while he was obsessed with creating a machine that could successfully cruise beneath the waves. His struggle to unlock the mystery behind controlled undersea navigation would take three decades, during which he endured skepticism, disappointment, and betrayal. But his indestructible belief in himself and his ideas led him to finally succeed where so many others had failed. Going Deep is a vivid chronicle of the fierce battles not only under the water, but also in the back rooms of Wall Street and the committee rooms of Congress. A rousing adventure—surrounded by an atmosphere of corruption and greed—at its heart this a story of bravery, passion, and the unbreakable determination to succeed against long odds.

He competed against top players such as Capablanca, Rubinstein and Alekhine at the height of their game, and was consistently successful, yet almost no one studies his games today. Lasker is often overlooked by the modern chess player, and the secrets of his success remain a mystery. Chess journalist Andy Soltis reveals for the first time the winning formula behind Lasker's phenonemal achievements. With over 100 annotated games, Soltis analyses the tricks, traps and techniques behind the winning moves, and makes Lasker's methods accessible to today's players.

Book excerpt: A Cold War thriller by the author of Chinese Burnwith “rough-edged and life-size characters [and] an unromanticized finale . . . in the Le Carré mode” (Kirkus Reviews). The KGB has come for Alexandrai Zorin. He may be a brilliant scientist but, like Solzhenitsyn, he is a dissident. He now faces the horrors of interrogation in Lubyanka Prison. In Washington, Allan Scott’s special status in the State Department allows him to operate on his own terms. When Scott and his team decide to break Zorin out of Russia, they set in motion a series of events that no one but the president himself can stop. In Folsom Prison, inmate John Parker would run any risk for a chance at freedom. And Scott’s team is about to offer him that chance—all he has to do is take Zorin’s place, trade Folsom for Lubyanka, and become a pawn in Scott’s dangerous gambit. “Strong, well-plotted, compassionate . . . A fine suspense novel with contemporary relevance.” —The New York Times “Can only be compared to The Spy Who Came in from the Cold.” —Jack Higgins, author of The Eagle has Landed

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps like this author you have a retirement account with savings invested in a diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds across industry sectors and financial markets. At the encouragement of your financial advisor, you may hold some international securities, including assets in emerging market economies like Hong Kong, which has long been one of the investment darlings of U.S. mutual fund managers. You would not be happy to learn, I suspect, that some of your foreign investment savings might be commingled with overseas money generated from illicit commerce, in particular Asian sex trafficking. That's the discovery of three Americans on vacation in Asia who get caught up in, and find themselves forced to thwart, a Hong Kong-based Chinese crime syndicate scheme to take control of Thailand's economy. The Hong Kong Gambit tells a fictional story based on the very real world of international illicit human trafficking that destroys lives of young girls and threatens the economic stability and progress of countries like Thailand.
