Book excerpt: Releasing on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, Charlie Donlea's exciting new suspense novel sees a victim from the North Tower make her voice heard two decades on... Avery Mason, TV host of American Events, knows her latest story – a murder mystery laced with sex, tragedy, and betrayal – is ratings gold. With new technology the New York medical examiner’s office has made its first successful identification of a 9/11 victim in years. The twist: the victim in question, Victoria Ford, had been accused of murder at the time of her death. In a chilling last call from the North Tower, Victoria had begged her sister, Emma, to prove her innocence. Twenty years later, Emma is convinced that Avery’s connections and fame will help her do just that. And Avery, hoping to negotiate a more lucrative contract, goes into investigative overdrive. But the twisted puzzle of Victoria’s life belies a much darker mystery. And there are other players in the game who are interested in Avery’s own past – one she has kept secret from both the TV executives and her audience. A secret she thought was dead and buried . . . 'A bold new writer on his way to becoming a major figure in the world of suspense.' Publishers Weekly 'Definitely a talent to watch.' Steve Berry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Erewhon Revisited’ the sequel to ‘Erewhon’, Samuel Butler’s acclaimed first novel, finds adventurer Higgs returning to the mysterious, distant land of Erewhon. There he discovers its people ruled by a religious cult inspired by his hot-air balloon escape thirty years earlier. Devious professors Hanky and Panky have invented a new religion called ‘Sunchildism’ and Higgs, the unwitting ‘Sun Child,’ is not welcome. The professors are determined to preserve their grip on Erewhonians leaving Higgs in mortal danger. With the help of his newfound son, Higgs must once again escape Erewhon if he is to survive. Butler’s humorous, perceptive book is a penetrating satire of Christianity in Victorian England and is still as relevant and fresh today. ‘Erewhon Revisited’ is Samuel Butler’s last novel. Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was a revolutionary English novelist and critic. He is best known for the utopian novel ‘Erewhon’ (1872) and the posthumous, semi-autobiographical novel ‘The Way of All Flesh’ (1903). Both of which have remained in print ever since. ‘Erewhon’ is renowned as one of the first books to explore the idea of machine evolution. The English writer Aldous Huxley acknowledged the book's influence on his novel ‘Brave New World’, while George Bernard Shaw deemed Butler ‘the greatest English writer of the latter half of the nineteenth century.’

Book excerpt: The discovery that mammalian brains contain neural stem cells which perform adult neurogenesis - the production and integration of new neurons into mature neural circuits - has provided a fully new vision of neural plasticity. On a theoretical basis, this achievement opened new perspectives for therapeutic approaches in restorative and regenerative neurology. Nevertheless, in spite of striking advancement concerning the molecular and cellular mechanisms which allow and regulate the neurogenic process, its exploitation in mammals for brain repair strategies remains unsolved. In non-mammalian vertebrates, adult neurogenesis also contributes to brain repair/regeneration. In mammals, neural stem cells do respond to pathological conditions in the so called "reactive neurogenesis", yet without substantial regenerative outcome. Why, even in the presence of stem cells in the brain, we lack an effective reparative outcome in terms of regenerative neurology, and which factors hamper the attainment of this goal? Essentially, what remains unanswered is the question whether (and how) physiological functions of adult neurogenesis in mammals can be exploited for brain repair purposes.

Book excerpt: 'Erewhon Revisited Twenty Years Later, Both by the Original Discoverer of the Country and by His Son' is a satirical novel by Samuel Butler. Erewhon, set in a thinly disguised New Zealand, ended with the escape of its unnamed protagonist from the native Erewhonians by balloon. In this book, narrated by his son John, we are told that our hero's name is Higgs. Higgs returns to Erewhon and meets his former lover Yram, who is now the mother of his son George. He discovers that he is now worshiped as "the Sunchild", his escape having been interpreted as an ascension into heaven, and that a church of Sunchildism has sprung up. He finds himself in danger from the villainous Professors Hanky and Panky, who are determined to protect Sunchildism from him. With George's help Higgs escapes from their clutches and returns to England.

Book excerpt: New essays on the evolution of cultural memory of the former German Democratic Republic since 1989-90 and its importance for Germany's continuing unification process. Twenty years on from the dramatic events that led to the opening of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the GDR, the subjective dimension of German unification is still far from complete. The nature of the East German state remains a matter of cultural as well as political debate. This volume of new research focuses on competing memories of the GDR and the ways they have evolved in the mass media, literature, and film since 1989-90. Taking as its point ofdeparture the impact of iconic visual images of the fall of the Wall on our understanding of the historical GDR, the volume first considers the decade of cultural conflict that followed unification and then the emergence of a morecomplex and diverse "textual memory" of the GDR since the Berlin Republic was established in 1999. It highlights competing generational perspectives on the GDR era and the unexpected "afterlife" of the GDR in recent publications. The volume as a whole shows the vitality of eastern German culture two decades after the demise of the GDR and the centrality of these memory debates to the success of Germany's unification process. Book excerpt: A fascinating new insight into the Falklands Conflict, covering every aspect of its origins and the political and diplomatic response to the Argentinean action as well as illuminating accounts of the military action to retake the islands, at every level of command. In June 2002, exactly twenty years after the cessation of hostilities between Britain and Argentina, many of the key participants came together at a major international conference. This conference, held at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst and organized jointly by RMA Sandhurst and her sister institution Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, aimed to re-examine the events of spring 1982 from the perspective that only twenty intervening years can bring. The Conference mixed those who had participated in the events of spring and early summer 1982, diplomats, politicians, civil servants, soldiers, sailors and airmen, with historians, political scientists and journalists. These accounts and interpretations of the conflict shed new light on one of the most interesting and controversial episodes in recent British history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers from the first two International Study Association on Teachers and Teaching conferences are presented in this title as book chapters. Each paper has historical value, marking as they do, both a change in topic focus and a revolution in research practice. They also have a practical value in that they provide a large reference source for, and a wide range of examples of, both topics and methods of research. Value for the future can be found in the texts that note lacunae in research and unresolved issues. Further, since the chapters derive from research conducted in a variety of national contexts, revealing some evidence of common constraints and opportunities impinging on education at the time, questions are stimulated about what has changed and what has stayed the same in the interim.

Book excerpt: Twenty Years Later" is a historical fiction novel by Alexandre Dumas Pere, first published in 1845. The novel is a sequel to The Three Musketeers, and follows the adventures of its characters two decades later, during the reign of Louis XIV. The novel begins with the return of d'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, who have been separated for twenty years. They reunite in Paris, where they find themselves in the midst of a political and social upheaval. The novel explores themes of loyalty, honor, and betrayal as the four friends navigate the complex political landscape of France. In Twenty Years Later, Dumas provides a vivid portrayal of seventeenth-century France, its customs, and its people. The novel is filled with vivid descriptions of the Parisian streets, the royal court, and the countryside. Dumas also depicts the turbulent political climate of the time, including the rise of the Fronde rebellion, the exile of the royal family, and the eventual restoration of the monarchy. The characters in Twenty Years Later are complex and multifaceted. D'Artagnan, the protagonist, is a brave and loyal soldier, but also a cunning and ambitious courtier. Athos, the group's elder statesman, is wise and honorable, but also prone to melancholy and regret. Porthos, the brawny musketeer, is boisterous and jovial, but also deeply insecure about his social status. Aramis, the former monk, is a master of intrigue and deception, but also a deeply spiritual man. Throughout the novel, the four friends are challenged by a host of enemies, including the scheming Cardinal Mazarin, the treacherous Milady de Winter, and the ambitious Prince de Conde. Despite these challenges, however, they remain steadfast in their loyalty to one another and to their king. Overall, Twenty Years Later is a thrilling and immersive novel that combines history, adventure, and romance. Its complex characters, vivid settings, and intricate plot make it a masterpiece of French literature and a must-read for anyone interested in historical fiction.

Featuring a wide range of established and emerging voices in critical terrorism studies, the book explores the deeply political character of remembering and forgetting, and the racialised, gendered and other contexts within which this takes place. A lively and provocative conversation between feminist, postcolonial, post-structural, literary and critical perspectives, 9/11 Twenty Years On asks what ‘the day that changed the world’ means for critical terrorism studies today, and how we might choose to mark those events in the future. It will be essential reading for upper-level students, researchers and academics in the fields of International Relations, Security Studies and Political Science in general, as well as anyone interested in critical approaches to terrorism, political violence, and memory. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Critical Studies on Terrorism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on measures pertaining to the three-pillar implementation strategy of R2P and examines how and to what extent the three pillars have been practised. Rich in its geographical scope, this edited book provides a critical analysis of R2P practice over the last two decades by focusing on representative cases from different regions. Analysing not only recent and/or underexplored cases but also widely studied cases from a fresh and alternative perspective, it sheds light on the depth and scope of the norm as well as the variety of actors involved and how they impact R2P practice. Diverging from most accounts, this edited book does not approach the cases as a ‘success’ or ‘failure’ of R2P. By studying the background to the conflicts and making assessments on a pillar-by-pillar basis, each chapter addresses the root causes, traces the process of implementation, investigates the actions of the actors involved, identifies elements of success and failure and finally questions the sustainability of the protection provided to date. Meanwhile, the conceptual chapters complement the case analyses through an overall evaluation of R2P’s first two decades and the progress achieved so far with the aim to draw lessons for future implementations of R2P.
