From there, the three find themselves below decks, with Arronax an honored guest of the vessel's commander, Captain Nemo.As the book progresses, the men hunt underwater, fight sharks, encounter Atlantis, and fight off giant squid. Book excerpt: Originally serialized between March 1869 and June 1870, Jules Verne's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" is one of the greatest underwater sea adventures of all time. It is the story of Professor Pierre Aronnax who sets off aboard an American frigate to investigate a series of attacks, which has been reported to be made by an amphibious monster. The monster in question is actually the submarine vessel the 'Nautilus,' which is commanded by the eccentric Captain Nemo. When the Nautilus destroys the Professor's ship, he is taken prisoner by Captain Nemo along with his trusted servant Conseil and the frigate's harpooner Ned Land. What follows for the three is a tale of great adventure and scientific wonder. An early pioneer of science fiction, Jules Verne's work is noted for its prediction of scientific advancements. In the case of "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" Verne accurately forecasted the development of submarine vessels. It is at once a harbinger of technology to come and captivating tale of adventure which has delighted readers ever since its original publication. This edition is translated by F. P. Walter, is illustrated by Milo Winter, and includes a biographical afterword.

Book excerpt: When an unidentified "monster" threatens international shipping, French oceanographer Pierre Aronnax and his unflappable assistant Conseil join an expedition organized by the US Navy to hunt down and destroy the menace. After months of fruitless searching, they finally grapple with their quarry, but Aronnax, Conseil, and the brash Canadian harpooner Ned Land are thrown overboard in the attack, only to find that the "monster" is actually a futuristic submarine, the Nautilus, commanded by a shadowy, mystical, preternaturally imposing man who calls himself Captain Nemo. Thus begins a journey of 20,000 leagues-nearly 50,000 miles-that will take Captain Nemo, his crew, and these three adventurers on a journey of discovery through undersea forests, coral graveyards, miles-deep trenches, and even the sunken ruins of Atlantis. Jules Verne's novel of undersea exploration has been captivating readers ever since its first publication in 1870, and Frederick Paul Walter's reader-friendly, scientifically meticulous translation of this visionary science fiction classic is complete and unabridged down to the smallest substantive detail.

A deluxe octavo edition, published by Hetzel in November 1871, included 111 illustrations by Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou.[1] The book was widely acclaimed on its release and remains so; it is regarded as one of the premiere adventure novels and one of Verne's greatest works, along with Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Center of the Earth. Its depiction of Captain Nemo's underwater ship, the Nautilus, is regarded as ahead of its time, since it accurately describes many features of today's submarines, which in the 1860s were comparatively primitive vessels.A model of the French submarine Plongeur (launched in 1863) figured at the 1867 Exposition Universelle, where Jules Verne examined it[2] and was inspired by it[3][4] when penning his novel.

Book excerpt: Some critics claim that Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, published in 1870, is Jules Verne’s masterpiece. The novel is narrated by Professor Pierre Aronnax of the Paris Museum of Natural History. It is set in the year 1866 (Verne was already working on the manuscript at that time) and the world of the sea is in the news with the supposed sightings of a sea monster that is much too large and fast to be a whale. When a boat is damaged, apparently by the sea monster, Aronnax, while on a researching assignment in New York is asked by the United States government to help track down the monster. Aronnax (illustrations of Aronnax in the original edition look very much like Verne) takes his loyal Belgian valet (Conseil) with him – both Aronnax and Conseil are men of science – cool, rational, and possessing encyclopaedic knowledge of the sea. Ned Land serves as their foil – a passionate and foolhardy harpooner from Canada. This annotated edition includes a biography and critical essay.

Book excerpt: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea was not intended to be a novel; Verne wrote in serialized form for the periodical Magasin d'Education et de Recreation, over an eighteen month period that began in March 1869. The serial was so well received that publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel decided to publish them as a book. The story is futuristic and almost science-fiction in nature, following the undersea journey of Captain Nemo, an abrasive and possibly slightly insane submarine captain whose submarine, the Nautilus, is initially mistaken for a large and threatening sea monster by explorers who set out to capture it. On finding out that the monster they are seeking is actually a machine, they join Nemo for a while, marveling at the magical world that exists underwater, but all the while feeling intensely uncomfortable and threatened by the volatile Captain. It was astonishingly well acclaimed on its publication, and this acclaim has not dimmed despite the novel's age.Verne had taken a scientific approach to writing the novel, basing the Nautilus on a model of the French submarine Plongeur (the Diver) that he had seen at the Paris World's Fair in 1867. As well as creating a fascinating hero in Nemo, Verne also included several characters who were based on real-life ocean explorers, in much the same way that he inserted several real-life adventurers in his Around The World In Eighty Days. A successful author, Verne seemed constantly to yearn for a life more adventurous than that of a writer, and his work shows a clear admiration for those who had harnessed their adventurous side and undertaken their individual voyages of discovery.
