D., 1883 The health of the Institution has been exceptionally good no deaths and scarcely any cases Of sickness are reported for the entire year. The Treasurer's report shows net assets Of the Institution in all its funds and properties of as against last year, being an increase of To this must be added the residuary Lyon estate. We have paid Off a mortgage on the Institution Of leaving our mortgage debt as against last year. It is well known that a considerable part of our Operations consist of the support Of county wards sent to us by the Commissioners of Charities. The marked increase in the number of county wards and in the expense Of maintaining them during the past few years has at tracted public notice. It is Very likely that some official inquiry will be made into the causes of this increase and' the best methods Of deal ing with it. As one of the agencies for carrying on this branch of the public charities of the County, we shall favor and court the fullest and most searching inquiry. It has been and continues to be our policy to receive all who are sent, to whom we feel that we can be useful, to provide them with a temporary home and as fast as possible find good homes for them in city or country. We cannot be answerable for the manner in which other institutions, similarly situated, carry out the objects Of the law. While we trust that all may be able to give a satisfactory account Of their stewardship, we record the fact that at a; visit which we recently and unexpectedly received from a committee of the Board Of Supervisors, we were so fortunate as to call forth their earnest commendation upon the management.
