Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Four Memory Hymns and Their Stories ON the way to the Denver Christian Endeavor Convention, Mrs. F. E. Clark asked a large number Of distinguished clergy men and eminent laymen that were upon the train, to prepare a list of what they considered the most beautiful and helpful Christian hymns. They did so, and °a large and exceedingly fine list was the result. There were many agreements, as, for instance, all had Jesus, Lover of My Soul and Nearer, My God, to Thee. The hymns that received the most votes may fairly be taken as the leading hymns Of the Christian church. It is these twenty-four hymns, together with their stories, that are given in this pamphlet. It is hoped that they will be committed to memory by all Juniors, and it is suggested that one Of these hymns be repeated in concert at every Junior meeting for a month. Let the pas tor or superintendent tell the story of the hymn, and give an Opportunity for those who can bring in additional stories to do so. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns Historically Famous The purpose of this volume is twofold: To in epire a warmer love of Church song; and to make the reader better acquainted with that class of hymns which are noted for the history they have made. The special aim has been to take the more popular and useful of our familiar compositions and give a fuller and more connected story of the lives of the authors, the origin of the hymns, with incidents of interest and value illustrating their influence, than have yet appeared in any annotated hymnal either in America or Great Britain. Twenty-three chapters are devoted to Church hymns and gospel songs which have two common characteristics universal popularity, and the power to make spiritual history. Many hymns are historic solely because their origin is closely related to some striking event, or associated with some hallowed experience; and the rule governing the scope of the book has been re laxed that a few of those having particular merit, might be annotated. The chapter - Five Lay Hymn Writers - was inserted for two important reasons First, the position those consecrated laymen occupy in Church hymnody in all English-speaking coun tries, is unique; and, second, the hymns selected from their writings and printed in these pages, are of great poetic beauty, and add much to the pleasure and profitof public worship. There are many favorite hymns which are perfect in form, exquisite in thought and expression, and which no doubt interpret charming Christian experiences, but not being connected with noteworthy historical facts, they could not properly find a place in this volume. They will speak for themselves. If of God, they will be found to be in accordance with his written word, and to exalt the name of his son J eons above all. Whatever may prove profitable in them, to our risen Lord be the praise for the help afi'orded by his Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will, that God in all things may be glorified through J csus Christ; to whom he praise and dominion, forever and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns for the Church and Home Editor has been guided not only by the merits of the hymn, but by its subject. Many hymns have been excluded, not because they are inferior to those that were adopted, but because the subject was already sufficiently illustrated, and some, be cause, however admirable, they were not so simple as that the poor and unleamed of the congregation could make them their own. In the hymns for Family and Private Worship, this rule has not been so strictly followed, and the line between the two parts has not been so rigidly drawn but that some hymns in each will be found admissible in the other. A place has also been found here for some which, however broad and congregational in their character, yet, being translations and in unfamiliar metres, have not become rooted among us; and one or two, such as 427, would have been inserted in the first part, but that it was already in type. The hymns for Children have been separately numbered, to prevent those who use them from being puzzled by what would otherwise have been the highest figures; but they are an integral part of the book, from which they are not intended to be detached, and which necessarily includes in its other divisions hymns which children ought to know. (Old Edition) The proprietors formed themselves into a body of Trustees, and as one dies another is elected into his place. These are assisted by a body of Assessors, the two constituting the Committee of Hymns A. M. The Chairmen of the Committee to date have been: the Rev. Sir W. H. Baker, Bt Vicar of Monkland, d. 1877; the Rev. W. Pulling, Vicar of Eastnor, resigned Nov., 1889, owing to failing health and eyesight; the Rev. G. Crosby White, Vicar of Newland, resigned November, 1904, on account of age the Rev. Canon N. Keymer, Canon Missioner of Southwell. From the commencement the meetings of the Committee have always started with'a recital of the Veni Creator. The success of Hymns A. M. Old Edition may be mainly ascribed to the following causes - (i) The combination of different interests in one book (ii) the happy title (iii) the unreasonable opposition with which its issue was greeted, helping to make it known (iv) the unity it introduced in going from one church to another; (v) it came exactly at the right time, Churchmen being prepared for an improvement in hymnology. SO great was, and has been, its success, that the Committee have been able to do everything but supplant it with what they consider a better book. Once more the union which A. M. Introduced is being threatened by a multiplicity Of hymn books, the Com pilers themselves starting to lead the way, but if A. M. Is to be supplanted it is likely to be by an altogether different book. One must not, too, omit the influence the book has had on Nonconformist singing. Dr. Julian says that within a dozen years of its publication not twenty hymns from it were sung in thousands of churches and chapels, where at the same time not twenty Of its tunes were unused. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Ages: For Public and Social Worship In the preparation of the Hymns of the Ages, the Editor has expend ed a vast amount of time and labor, and has attempted to gather the best hymns and tunes both of Europe and America. The cost of copyrights has been very great. He wishes to return thanks to those composers who have kindly allowed him to use their pieces gratis; and to a large number of European composers whose addresses it has been impossible to secure. He is under lasting obligation to the accomplished musician Prof. N. Bowditch Clapp, for his revision of the musical part of the work; and, for their help in the selection of hymns and tunes, to Rev. M. D. Hoge, D. D., Rev. W. A. Campbell, D. D., Rev. T. D. Witherspoon, D. D., Rev. W. S. Lacy D. D., and Rev. J. P. Smith D. D. These distinguished divines have afforded invaluable assistance by giving the' benefit of their experience and taste in the preparation of the work. A large chorus choir, trained to sing rapidly, and with spirit, is the best inspiration for congregational singing. After the introduction of a new book, there should also be meetings held on some evening during the week for congregational practice that the people may learn new tunes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hymnary: A Book of Church Song The Editors of the Hymnary believe that no collection of Hymns can be considered perfect or final, or worthy of exclusive adoption by the Church, 0 long as devout men continue to pour out in humble worship fresh gifts of song and music before the feet of the Incarnate Lord. They have attempted, in the present compilation, to supply some practical wants in all existing hymn-books, which have been felt by themselves, and by many others who have communicated with them. Their work is the result of more than twenty years of hymnological study; one of them having been the compiler of one Hymnal, and joint-editor of another, which attained no mean circulation; the other, one of the original editors of the Hymnal Noted.
