Book Synopsis Aspects of Twentieth-century Theatre in French by : Michael Cardy
Download or read book Aspects of Twentieth-century Theatre in French written by Michael Cardy and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assembles fifteen essays by different hands on dramatic literature written in French in the twentieth century. The great majority of the essays deal with plays published after 1939. Each chapter is an original study of aspects of the work of a given author that have been overlooked or inadequately treated in the scholarly literature to date. Most of the greatest French dramatists of the century are represented in the volume, although several of the authors studied are not primarily known for their contributions to dramatic literature, while the inclusion of a 'provincial' playwright and of two Québécois dramatists seeks to surprise readers by reminding them that Paris does not enjoy a total monopoly on French-speaking theatre. The book has as its primary aim to illustrate the vitality and the sheer variety of drama written in French during the century.

It presents an extensive list of the dramatic works of more than 400 French women playwrights from the 16th through 19th centuries and includes brief biographical information, as well as publication, performance, and availability information for nearly 3,000 plays. The volume includes authors who are relatively unknown, as well as more canonical names such as Marguerite de Navarre and George Sand. The book is divided into four chapters, each devoted to a particular century with authors listed alphabetically. Each entry includes basic biographical information about the author, such as pseudonyms, place and date of birth and death, professions or activities for which the author is known, and other genres in which the author wrote. Plays are listed chronologically under the author's name.
Book Synopsis Essays on Twentieth-century German Drama and Theater by : Hellmut H. Rennert
Download or read book Essays on Twentieth-century German Drama and Theater written by Hellmut H. Rennert and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles by both German literature specialists and German theater experts grew out of the Comparative Drama Conference held annually between February and March from 1977 to 1999 in Gainesville, Florida. At the center of the contributors' work is the productive tension between the literary and the performance aspects of German drama and theater. At the same time, the reception is truly American, since the German playwrights, directors, theorists, and dramatists discussed have gone through creative filters in the researching, performing, and teaching of German drama and theater on various campuses across the United States during the last third of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Dramatists of the 19th Century It is not yet sixty years since the Romanticists and the Classicists first met in battle-array; and it is but little more than fifty years since Hernani sounded his trumpet, and the hollow walls of Classicism fell with a final crash. This half-century is a period of no slight importance in the history of the drama: it is one of the two epochs when the plays of France have been conspicuously and incomparably superior to the plays of any other country; the earlier epoch was when the French stage saw in rapid succession the newest works of Corneille, of Molière, and of Racine. Although, with our ownership of Shakspere constantly in mind, we may not be willing to allow that the French have reached the highest pinnacle of the drama, we can see clearly enough that it is in the drama that they have mounted highest.
