Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Karen LaMonte is a leading figure among a generation of American artists using glass in large-scale sculptural work that exemplifies technical achievement coupled with artistic quality ... whose work reflects a sophisticated American probing into social and gender issues ... LaMonte began using the dress as a sculptural form and metaphorical symbol ... life-sized dresses ... which ... project ideals of appearance and wealth promoted by haute couture, while questioning the psychological and social implications of the way we dress ... While glass is LaMonte's primary medium, she frequently incorporates both photography and printmaking processes in her work, innovatively exploring different media to elaborate her conceptual ideas"--Http://www.museumofglass.org/s01_exhibition28.jsp.
Download or read book Limited Edition written by Sophie Lovell and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limited Edition is the new buzzword in furniture design. The demand for unique pieces is steadily increasing. With prototypes, one-offs and limited product lines, designers are celebrating a cult of individuality for all price classes. Furniture prototypes have always been an element of the industrial design process, but now they are being brought from the workshops and presented to the public as embodiments of one of the most exciting creative fields of our age. In the global village with its standardized commodities, exclusive one-offs with an artisanal flavor are turning into coveted objects. Limited furniture series satisfy the collector’s thirst for objects that dissolve the boundary between art and design. Limited Edition pursues this new phenomenon and uncovers its background in meticulous investigative essays based on the author’s ongoing interchange with key designers, gallery owners, auctioneers and manufacturers. With a rich selection of magnificent images and an attractive layout, it presents the best and most breathtaking pieces by the leading designers.

Book Synopsis Visualizing the Nineteenth-century Home by : Anca I. Lasc
Download or read book Visualizing the Nineteenth-century Home written by Anca I. Lasc and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century - the Era of the Interior - witnessed the steady displacement of art from the ceilings, walls, and floors of aristocratic and religious interiors to the everyday spaces of bourgeois households, subject to their own enhanced ornamentation. Following the 1863 Salon des refuses, the French State began to channel mediocre painters into the decorative arts. England, too, launched an extensive reform of the decorative arts, resulting in more and more artists engaged in the production and design of complete interiors. America soon followed. Present art historical scholarship - still indebted to a modernist discourse that sees cultural progress to be synonymous with the removal of ornament from both utilitarian objects and architectural spaces - has not yet acknowledged the importance of the decorative arts in the myriad interior spaces of the 1800s. Nor has mainstream art history reckoned with the importance of the interior in nineteenth-century life and thought. Aimed at an interdisciplinary audience, including art and design historians, historians of the modern interior, interior designers, visual culture theorists, and scholars of nineteenth-century material culture, this collection of essays studies the modern interior in new ways. The volume addresses the double nature of the modern interior as both space and image, blurring the boundaries between arts and crafts, decoration and high art, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, trompe-l'oeil effects and spatial practices. In so doing, it redefines the modern interior and its objects as essential components of modern art.
