Book Synopsis Higher Education Management and Operational Research by : Gary Bell
Download or read book Higher Education Management and Operational Research written by Gary Bell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Education in the UK operates in a rapidly changing and highly complex environment. Universities need to adapt quickly to this environment and managers must begin to explore ‘new angles’ and approaches in addressing the challenges they are now facing. This book offers a tool box of metaphors and associative Operational Research (OR) approaches. Metaphors are a powerful ‘way of seeing’ but also ‘a way of not seeing’. Furthermore, the OR discipline has significantly evolved over the last 30 years which has led to the emergence of three distinctive intellectual areas, namely Hard OR, Soft OR and Methodological Pluralism OR. Drawing on these intellectual areas and on the experience of educational and OR practitioners, the book highlights the use of various OR approaches to a variety of complex and uncertain problems encountered in higher education management. The book aims to explore ‘new perspectives’ in HE management thinking and to describe and illustrate the use of OR methodologies, methods and techniques in helping HE managers to make informed management decisions.

Book Synopsis Qualitative Spatial Abstraction in Reinforcement Learning by : Lutz Frommberger
Download or read book Qualitative Spatial Abstraction in Reinforcement Learning written by Lutz Frommberger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-13 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforcement learning has developed as a successful learning approach for domains that are not fully understood and that are too complex to be described in closed form. However, reinforcement learning does not scale well to large and continuous problems. Furthermore, acquired knowledge specific to the learned task, and transfer of knowledge to new tasks is crucial. In this book the author investigates whether deficiencies of reinforcement learning can be overcome by suitable abstraction methods. He discusses various forms of spatial abstraction, in particular qualitative abstraction, a form of representing knowledge that has been thoroughly investigated and successfully applied in spatial cognition research. With his approach, he exploits spatial structures and structural similarity to support the learning process by abstracting from less important features and stressing the essential ones. The author demonstrates his learning approach and the transferability of knowledge by having his system learn in a virtual robot simulation system and consequently transfer the acquired knowledge to a physical robot. The approach is influenced by findings from cognitive science. The book is suitable for researchers working in artificial intelligence, in particular knowledge representation, learning, spatial cognition, and robotics.

Book Synopsis Developing Government Policy Capability by : Dr. Chivonne Algeo
Download or read book Developing Government Policy Capability written by Dr. Chivonne Algeo and published by Project Management Institute. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of public and government policy presents a "wicked" problem because it tends to be highly contested, involves many different stakeholders, and yields outcomes that change and evolve over time. Developing Government Policy Capability examines the role project management plays in supporting how policy work is conducted. Using Australia's controversial Tobacco Plain Packaging Act 2011 as a case study, the authors explore the question: Can project management practices contribute to improving government policy development and implementation capability? Their argument—that project management can solve even "wicked" problems—is not necessarily new. As they explain, that's pretty much what project management is all about. Project managers need to clearly articulate, acknowledge, and legitimize invisible work—the bridge between what is being done and what is supposed to be done. The project management tool set and the importance of recognizing the societal dimension when planning and conducting projects can make it possible for practitioners to tackle even the most complex policy work.
