Book excerpt: Solomon Northup was born a free man in New York State. At the age of 33 he was kidnapped in Washington D.C. and placed in an underground slave pen. Northup was transported by ship to New Orleans where he was sold into slavery. He spent the next 12 years working as a carpenter, driver, and cotton picker. This narrative reveals how Northup survived the harsh conditions of slavery, including smallpox, lashings, and an attempted hanging. Solomon Northup was among a select few who were freed from slavery. His account describes the daily life of slaves in Louisiana, their diet and living conditions, the relationship between master and slave, and how slave catchers used to recapture runaways. Northup's first person account published in 1853, was a dramatic story in the national debate over slavery that took place in the nine years leading up to the start of the American Civil War.

It also proved to be a box office success, earning over $140 million on a production budget of $20 million. The film has won three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress for Nyong'o and Best Adapted Screenplay for Ridley. It was awarded the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts recognized the film with the Best Film and the Best Actor award for Ejiofor. 12 Year a Slave. However, little mention has been made of the fact that 12 Years a Slave is a REMAKE! What's more, the original television film was directed by the often celebrated Gordon Parks. The screenplay was written by Lou Potter and the noted playwright-actor Samm-Art Williams, who were also, inspired by Northrup's 1853 book Twelve Years a Slave. Why this fact has not been mention by film critics or film historians is a bit of a mystery.

Book excerpt: "Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup: A Citizen of New-York, Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841, and Rescued in 1853, from a Cotton Plantation Near the Red River, in Louisiana" is now a major motion picture and an Oscar contender. This narrative is a wonderfully written and brutally honest portrayal of slavery in America told in the first-hand perspective by Solomon Northup. Over six thousand accounts have been written over the years from individual slave experiences, yet Northup's narrative stands out as a deeply moving and provocative personal tale of his experience as a slave--as poignant and relevant today as when it was first published. At times horrific, and at other times introspective, this tale challenges sugar coated beliefs about slavery and the treatment of human beings during this dark period of American history. An engaging and engrossing read, Northup's narrative keeps the reader invested in his story and his experiences until the final page. This book grabs the reader from the first line and compels them to endure, as Northup did, the horrors and injustice of enslavement. While not for the faint of heart, this gritty portrayal of captivity opens the reader's eyes to the realities of injustice and violence that can occur when a society deems other individuals as property. Solomon Northup's book, "Twelve Years a Slave," is an amazing story of struggle and survival in the worst of conditions. It tells of the extreme challenges the human soul and body can undergo and what humans must do to survive the horrors of slavery. An invaluable edition to any library and a must read for any individual interested in human rights, American history, and personal experiences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve Years a Slave is an 1853 memoir and slave narrative by American Solomon Northup as told to and edited by David Wilson. Northup, a black man who was born free in New York state, details his being tricked to go to Washington, D.C., where he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Deep South. After having been kept in bondage for 12 years in Louisiana by various masters, Northup was able to write to friends and family in New York, who in turn secured his release with the aid of the state. Northup's account provides extensive details on the slave markets in Washington, D.C. and New Orleans, and describes at length cotton and sugar cultivation and slave treatment on major plantations in Louisiana. The work was published eight years before the Civil War by Derby & Miller of Auburn, New York, soon after Harriet Beecher Stowe's best-selling novel about slavery, Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), to which it lent factual support. Northup's book, dedicated to Stowe, sold 30,000 copies, making it a bestseller in its own right. After being published in several editions in the 19th century and later cited by specialist scholarly works on slavery in the United States, the memoir fell into public obscurity for nearly 100 years. It was re-discovered on separate occasions by two Louisiana historians, Sue Eakin (Louisiana State University at Alexandria) and Joseph Logsdon (University of New Orleans). In the early 1960s, they researched and retraced Solomon Northup's journey and co-edited a historically annotated version that was published by Louisiana State University Press (1968).The memoir has been adapted as two film versions, produced as the 1984 PBS television movie Solomon Northup's Odyssey and the Oscar-winning 2013 film 12 Years a Slave. Solomon Northup (July 10, 1807, or 1808-1863?) was an American abolitionist and the primary author of the memoir Twelve Years a Slave. A free-born African American from New York, he was the son of a freed slave and free woman of color. A farmer and professional violinist, Northup had been a landowner in Hebron, New York. In 1841, he was offered a traveling musician's job and went to Washington, D.C. (where slavery was legal); there he was drugged, kidnapped, and sold as a slave. He was shipped to New Orleans, purchased by a planter, and held as a slave for 12 years in the Red River region of Louisiana, mostly in Avoyelles Parish. He remained in slavery until he met a Canadian working on his plantation who helped get word to New York, where state law provided aid to free New York citizens kidnapped into slavery. Family and friends enlisted the aid of the Governor of New York, Washington Hunt, and Northup regained his freedom on January 3, 1853.... David Wilson, (born September 17, 1818, Hebron, New York, U.S.-died June 9, 1870, Albany, New York) American lawyer and author who collaborated with Solomon Northup to describe the latter's kidnapping and enslavement in Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a Citizen of New York, Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841, and Rescued in 1853, from a Cotton Plantation near the Red River in Louisiana (1853). Wilson attended Salem Washington Academy in Salem, New York, and graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York, in 1840. He then studied law with lawyer and future state senator Orville Clark in Sandy Hill (now Hudson Falls), New York, and later practiced law in Whitehall, New York.
