Book excerpt: Growing out of a conference entitled Literary Theory volume reveal, among other more particularistic points, a fundamental overt disagreement regarding the question of coherence in narrative point of view, i.e. between the assumption or discovery of coherent and unitary narratives and narrators, the critique of this assumption, and the assumption or discovery of its opposite. Book excerpt: In one of her most personal books, Elisabeth Elliot shares her own perceptions on the meanings of the events in her turbulent life, including the death of her first husband at the hands of the Auca Indians of South America and the cancer that widowed her for the second time. Undeterred by grief and hardship, Elliot lived a productive life as a mother, missionary, author, and Christian intellectual. The themes of this collection touch on her both her life experiences and the overarching Christian values of overcoming difficulties, taking responsibility, exercising discipline, and the redeeming grace of God which, in spite of trouble, gives us our life, calls us to labor, and grants us our salvation.

Book excerpt: This study of the miracles attributed to Jesus in the Gospels begins with a survey of the sciences, because in our present cultural context, materialism is the dominant approach to and understanding of our world, of history, and of our very selves. If the materialist's understanding is true, then there is no such thing as miracles, because every event must occur as the result of some previous material events. Contemporary biblical scholarship mostly approaches the miracle stories from a materialist point of view. It questions their historicity because they violate what has now become the entrenched modus operandi in our culture and society, operating with the idea that the universe is a closed nexus of cause and effect. The miracles are understood, then, as products of the community and not historical reports, although, according to this line of scholarship, they may be based on some vague recollection of Jesus’s activity that somehow had healing effects. Modern science, however, as one scientist has put it, in climbing the mountain of knowledge, has reached its peak and found a theologian at the top. The sciences, in other words, have led to the implication that our universe has a creator and that the universe and the human genome have been designed.

These experiences have given him a larger understanding of the world. With this sweeping knowledge, he shares a thought-provoking and spiritually enriching look on religion and its iterations. Through the collection of writings in God in Us, Sjostedt addresses an array of topics, including: Creation The Law of Intended Consequences and free will Modifying and moderating free will The Jews and the Essenes Jesus, the origins of Christianity, and the Bible The divinity of Jesus and the Christian church Parallels between Christianity and Paganism God in us Attaining enlightenment The presence of evil When God becomes wanton Lucifers tale In God in Us, Sjostedt begins to unravel the content of Jesus true gospel. God is the one power in from whom all life and matter evolve.

Book excerpt: This book was birthed as a result of seeing many sincere Christians falling into heresy, myths, and fairy tales spun by irresponsible preachers who would speak anything in order to gain an audience through lies and deceit. The contents of this book are not fictional. They were all painstakingly tested and lived in order to test the doctrines learnt in the modern churches. This book is dedicated to help those who want to move in the Spirit of God, to be truly led by him and not by man-made rules and teachings, which have no power to manifest the presence of God in their walk. The author teaches how to hear from God and the main principles or laws in the kingdom of God that is true kingdom living. The author was ordained and called by God through three distinct verses given supernaturally by the Holy Spirit; these are Numbers 33:33, Job 33:33, and Ezekiel 33:33.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All that we know of Jesus and his original message is derived from a few ancient texts, among which the Gospel According to Mark is particularly fascinating and often perplexing. Mark, the shortest of the four Gospels of the New Testament, came first and planted the seeds of thought from which the Christian tradition has grown. We gain insight into the Gospel as we begin to let go of assumptions rooted in long familiarity. The Seminal Gospel is an exploration of Mark and an extended personal reflection on what his telling of the story of Jesus can mean to us today. It reproduces the King James Version of Mark’s text in forty chapters, providing commentary that is explanatory and insightful. It draws broadly on the author’s literary, historical, and theological interests.

The plastic in the oceans, the soil, and our bodies is a symptom of the broader problem of disposable culture. We are not just treating objects as disposable--we are treating ourselves and each other as disposable, too. The story of plastics parallels the story of my life, from my childhood living aboard a sailboat to graduate work on plastics and endocrine disruption, and ultimately teaching about plastics, not only as a complex set of chemicals, but as a spiritual poison.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preachers often feel stuck when met with quickly shifting and dense media topics that flood the headlines. If and when they determine it is appropriate to address issues that arise in the news cycle, they are often at a loss for how to speak about them from the pulpit. When preachers understand that a responsibility to sustain life is embedded in the purposes of preaching, they discover greater fluidity between the everyday world, the biblical text, and preaching itself. Preaching the Headlines reframes preaching as an ongoing conversation between the modern world and the world of the Bible, exploring where the divides between the two may be less rigid than we often acknowledge. The preacher uses what they know about life as a bridge to the text, while life in the text provides the bridge back to faith in the contemporary world. The goal of the book is to help preachers do theological reflection on the everyday world as an integral part of sermon development. The process offered in this book is not a substitute for basic methods of sermon development nor a model of exegesis for preaching. Preachers will use this process as a supplement alongside their current method of sermon preparation. Before the preacher can ever translate the meaning embedded in the headlines, they have to learn more about the topics they seek to preach about. They do this by digging behind the headlines and expanding their own resources beyond theological traditions alone. This work is done in order to think earnestly about how faith might spur transformative action in our world for more just ways of living together.

Book excerpt: When leaders use the public forum to speak and propagate their beliefs and thought processes, be it religious views or political thoughts, it is the responsibility of the listener to make an informed decision. Whether or not they act on the preaching is a decision that the audience makes, every individual in the audience, and the consequences of those decisions, good or bad, are to be borne in its entirety by that individual. They will need to use their God-given intelligence to discern right from wrong, moral from immoral, encouragement from tearing down, creation from destruction and choose life over death. The propagator, similarly, cannot be vindicated from the consequences of those actions. Just as they enjoy the applause and adulation of their audience, they should be mindful of the effects of a wrongful message and take responsibility for the same. Being aware of the fact that what they say and do is being watched by their audience, they should automatically restrain their words, actions, posts and even their very thought processes. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – think on these things. ~ Philippians 4:8
