Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a major shift in Canadian economic policy in 1975, the Bank of Canada announced its adherence to the principle of restricting the growth in the country's money supply in an effort to restrain inflation. The authors argue that this adoption of monetarist policies failed in Canada because it did not lend itself to dealing with the structural aspects of inflation and because, along with other policies, it did not alleviate the growing balance of payments deficit. First published in 1979, The Monetarist Counter-Revolution is an early and acute criticism of monetarist economic policies as applied in Canada.

Book Synopsis The Development of Welfare States in Europe and America by : Peter Flora
Download or read book The Development of Welfare States in Europe and America written by Peter Flora and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to contribute to an interdisciplinary, comparative, and historical study of Western welfare states. It attempts to link their historical dynamics and contemporary problems in an international perspective. Building on collaboration between European-and American-based research groups, the editors have coordinated contributions by economists, political scientists, sociologists, and historians. The developments they analyze cover a time span from the initiation of modern national social policies at the end of the nineteenth century to the present. The experiences of all the presently existing Western European systems except Spain and Portugal are systematically encompassed, with comparisons developed selectively with the experiences of the United States and Canada. The development of the social security systems, of public expenditures!and taxation, of public education and educational opportunities, and of income inequality are described, compared, and analyzed for varying groupings of the Western European and North American nations. This volume addresses itself mainly to two audiences. The first includes all students of policy problems of the welfare states who seek to gain a comparative perspective and historical understanding. A second group may be more interested in the theory and empirical analysis of long-term societal developments. In this context, the growth of the welfare states ranges as a major departure, along with the development of national states and capitalist economies. The welfare state is interpreted as a general phenomenon of modernization, as a product of the increasing differentiation and the growing size of societies on the one hand, and of processes of social and political mobilization on the other. It is an important element of the structural convergence of modern societies -- by its mere weight in all countries -- and at the same time a source of divergence by the variations within its institutional structure.

Download or read book Measuring Health written by Anthony J. Culyer and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1978-12-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planning and evaluating any health care program is a formidable task: how do you measure the health of a population? This fundamental question has been approached from various perspectives in medical, administrative, and economic studies. This book provides a guide to health measurement literature and relates it to Ontario's current and prospective policy choices and to the federal context of health indicators and indices to existing statistics in Ontario in a county-by-county survey of the province's health care. He also outlines the kinds of information essential to health assessment but not currently available. The book as a whole emphasizes the importance of health care measurement in the humane and efficient planning of health services. It will be of interest to all concerned with the practice of medicine in the 1980s and the planning of health services at the federal and provincial levels, as well as to those with a special interest in health from the economic, political, and sociological perspectives.

Book Synopsis Entering the Eighties by : R. Kenneth Carty
Download or read book Entering the Eighties written by R. Kenneth Carty and published by Oxford University Press Canada. This book was released on 1980 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume, which explore the Canadian condition at the beginning of the eighties, deal with fundamental issues of concern to all thoughtful Canadians. The eight essayists are distinguished historians and political scientists: Louis Balthazar, Michael Bliss, Robert Craig Brown, Ramsay Cook, J.R. Mallory, H.V. Nelles, Donald Smiley, and Denis Smith. In addressing four basic themes-the nation and nationality, Quebec and the referendum, the economy and the state, and Parliament and politicians-they suggest new answers to those perennial Canadian questions: Who are we? What are we doing together? How shall we go about our common business? As the editors observe in their introduction: '...such matters as the identity, purpose, and functioning of a nation are the great issues of modern society, and each community and each age must resolve them anew. That task has fallen to Canadians at the dawn of the 1980s, and to the ongoing deliberations all the writers in this volume have made a contribution.'
