Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The native people, known today as the Sinagua, inhabited the Verde Valley of Arizona for centuries. From around 700 AD to early 1400 AD, they farmed the land and built large pueblo communities throughout the area. They accomplished this task using only primitive stone tools, materials from their environment, and the strength of their intellect and muscle. One of the largest communal dwellings, and later the most extensively excavated, is called Tuzigoot. This sprawling, hilltop complex contained over 100 rooms and was once home to several hundred people before it was mysteriously abandoned. Excavated and partially restored between 1933 and 1934, Tuzigoot is currently administered by the National Park Service after being designated a national monument by Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939. Today, although off the beaten track, it hosts more than 100,000 visitors a year.

Book excerpt: "You better go and see what they're doing up there," is what John Tavasci's father said to him one day in 1933 when the Tavascis spotted twostrangers digging on the hill. The hill was on property the Tavascis leased from the local mining company. It turned out the two strangers werestudents from the University of Arizona and they were to excavate what we now know as Tuzigoot National Monument. Young John Tavasci, eightyears old at the time, talked with the students, watched them dig over the next two years, and witnessed the unearthing of everything from smallpotsherds to large intact ollas. The students went on to excavate other sites, but John Tavasci grew up, stayed in Clarkdale, and ran a dairy operation on nearby land leasedfrom the mining company alongside the Verde River for the next seven decades.2 In 1991 the mining company terminated the lease and theTavascis were forced to leave the land. One consolation to the family was that the marsh was formally named Tavasci Marsh. In March 2006, whatwe now know as the Tavasci Marsh became a part of the Tuzigoot National Monument. The story of the Tavascis and the marsh are intricately linked with the history of Tuzigoot. The connection begins with the young JohnTavasci witnessing the unearthing of Tuzigoot, and extends to how the land and monument developed. This is the story of the excavation, stewardship, and interpretation of an archaeological site; the consequences of its proximity to a large-scale mining operation on its establishment as a national monument and its long-term environmental management issues; and the change over time in values that effected, and continue to effect, the use, flow, and relationship with the Verde River as it runs through Clarkdale, Arizona.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colorado Plateau is America’s western treasure, home to the country’s highest concentration of national parks, monuments, wilderness areas, and state parks, and a near-endless bounty of wild, stunning landscape. Discovering the Colorado Plateau will explore this region through beautiful maps, full-color photography, and detailed descriptions of the area’s geography, history, and geology, as well as signature activities that encapsulate the best each locale has to offer. By purposefully shifting the focus away from the national parks, this book introduces readers to the various public lands and protected areas that are as exciting and wonderful as any of the major parks. Unlike any other book published recently about the Plateau, this book not only acts as a source of great information and imagery, but as a practical guide and a true celebration of one of America’s most beautiful and endangered lands.

Book excerpt: When a local rancher's body is discovered in Tuzigoot National Monument, Doug and Jill Fletcher are dispatched to investigate the suspicious death. Horseshoe prints where the body was found point the investigation toward the dozens of local ranches and trail ride companies. The clues lead the Fletchers into Cottonwood, a nearby tourist town with a blossoming wine tasting industry. It quickly becomes apparent that the victim was a bed-hopping cowboy, who has left behind a string of scorned women and angry husbands. While riding along the Verde River in search of clues, Doug and Jill are befriended by Gunner, a young cowboy who'd been injured in a rodeo accident. Socially inept and somewhat slow, Gunner sees things that others overlook. His daily rides around Tuzigoot made him a reluctant witness to much of what happened following the murder. Despite slowly developing confidence in his horsemanship, Doug is forced to ride "Lightning" when their prime suspect flees on horseback. He and Lightning follow, as Jill gallops off in pursuit of their murder suspect. The chase turns into a scene from a Wild West movie when the fleeing cowboy fires his six-shooter at his pursuers.
