Download or read book Sphaerae Mundi written by Edward Dahl and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-06-29 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in modern science and technology have made present-day terrestrial and celestial globes scientifically obsolete and aesthetically banal. From the Renaissance to the mid-nineteenth century, however, they were indispensable tools for the study of geography and astronomy. Beginning with an overview of early globes, the authors examine how the modern era in globe making, which began in Flemish and Dutch shops in the early seventeenth century, show how globe making spread throughout Europe, and explain how what were both decorative and scientific objects became symbols of power, universal knowledge, intellectual status, and personal vanity. Beginning with the collection's earliest globe, dated 1533, the authors introduce us to the life and works of some of the greatest Dutch, French, English, German, Italian, and Swedish globe makers. The 120 colour illustrations allow the reader to savour these rare and unusual works and include numerous detailed reproductions of both terrestrial and celestial map images. Sphæræ Mundi charts developments and changes over three centuries of globe making, considering the globes as indicators of scientific advance and geographical exploration as well as artifacts and providing a unique opportunity to become familiar with these complex and beautiful objects.

Book Synopsis Of Time and Measurement by : Anthony John Turner
Download or read book Of Time and Measurement written by Anthony John Turner and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of precision technology may seem a small, specialised subject, concerned with the development of such mundane, even banal objects as sun-dials, sand-glasses, clocks or rulers and other measuring instruments. Yet their development, as the author holds, has helped condition how we relate to the natural world and is therefore a key aspect of cultural history. For many classes of instruments there are still no basic narrative accounts of their internal evolution, and a number of these studies represent an effort towards fulfilling that need. In others, starting with an object or an object and its maker, the author asks what did it do, and then who wanted it to do it and why, penetrating into the more general social context.
Book Synopsis Making Publics in Early Modern Europe by : Bronwen Wilson
Download or read book Making Publics in Early Modern Europe written by Bronwen Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-07-21 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book looks at how people, things, and new forms of knowledge created "publics" in early modern Europe, and how publics changed the shape of early modern society. The focus is on what the authors call "making publics" — the active creation of new forms of association that allowed people to connect with others in ways not rooted in family, rank or vocation, but rather founded in voluntary groupings built on the shared interests, tastes, commitments, and desires of individuals. By creating new forms of association, cultural producers and consumers challenged dominant ideas about just who could be a public person, greatly expanded the resources of public life for ordinary people in their own time, and developed ideas and practices that have helped create the political culture of modernity. Coming from a number of disciplines including literary and cultural studies, art history, history of religion, history of science, and musicology, the contributors develop analyses of a range of cases of early modern public-making that together demonstrate the rich inventiveness and formative social power of artistic and intellectual publication in this period.
