Book Synopsis Italian Rustic by : Elizabeth Helman-Minchilli
Download or read book Italian Rustic written by Elizabeth Helman-Minchilli and published by Artisan Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of Tuscan farmhouse style, with practical advice on how to bring the look home. For anyone who has ever dreamed of living under the Tuscan sun, Italian Rustic is the next best thing--a step-by-step guide to recreating the romance and appeal of the weathered Italian farmhouse. This nuts-and-bolts guide to building Italian-style walks the reader through all the elements that make the rustic Italian home so unique, from the hand-laid stone walls to the artisanal stucco wall finishes. Author Elizabeth Minchilli, an American design writer based in Rome and Tuscany, received dozens of questions from readers after publishing her last book, Artisan's Restoring a Home in Italy. The queries went beyond the usual searches for fabric and couches. "People were hungry to know how terra-cotta tiles were laid, or how fireplaces were built," she says. Italian Rustic, researched with the help of her Italian architect husband, is the user-friendly result: a book that explains, in clear text accompanied by photographs and drawings, how to lay a tile floor a la Italiana, or add a Tuscan-style pergola to any garden. With more than 300 stunning photographs shot on location in Tuscany and Umbria, the book contains profiles of local artisans, engaging text on how the farmhouse style evolved, and targeted advice on how Americans can find Italian-style building materials and craftsmen close to home. This essential sourcebook will appeal to anyone building an addition or an entire house from scratch, or for homeowners who want to add just a touch of Italian style to their houses.

Download or read book Soffritto written by Benedetta Vitali and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, Vitali was the pastry chef and co-owner, with her former husband, of Florence's internationally acclaimed Cibreo restaurant. A year or so ago, she opened her own, more casual restaurant, Zibibbo, in the hills above the city. In this cookbook (soffritto is the sauted onion, carrot, and celery mix that is the base for many Italian dishes), she shares her passion for food, for the best ingredients prepared without artifice. It is a very personal book, with recipes organized not by course, but by topics, such as "Aroma and Taste" and "Layering Flavors." "Memory and Innovation" provides a progression from traditional recipes to their newer interpretations, while "Bread, Oil, and Wine" focuses on classic Tuscan dishes. Vitali has a unique style, guiding her readers step by step through the recipes and offering up her philosophy on cooking and life with sensitivity and wit. Highly recommended. - Library Journal Soffritto is a homey, meandering cookbook that makes you feel as if you're standing at author Benedetta Vitali's side as she saut s the minced red onion, celery, and carrot mixture for which the book is named. "Good cooking is an act of creativity," she says. "Use the recipes as indications, and trust your instincts to fill in the blanks." A simple Pomarola (Tomato Sauce with Garlic and Basil) can be prepared in just 10 minutes--the variations are as endless as your imagination. Try Fagioli (White Beans with Prosciutto, Tomato, and Sage) as a main dish or pair it with Poached Sea Bass. Finish your meal with Bonnet (Amaretto Custard). Each recipe is a story and therefore is as enjoyable to read as it is to follow. Depending on your palate, some recipes may be better off as stories than as dinners, as evidenced by Ragu con Colli Repieni (Meat Sauce with Stuffed Chicken Necks). --Dana Van Nest

Book Synopsis The SyntaxProsody Interface by : Giuliano Bocci
Download or read book The SyntaxProsody Interface written by Giuliano Bocci and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an experimental and theoretical investigation of the interplay between information structure, word order alternations, and prosody in Italian. Left/right dislocations, focus fronting, and other reordering phenomena are analyzed, taking into account their morphosyntactic and prosodic properties. It is argued that a restricted set of discourse-related properties are inserted in the numeration as formal features. These discourse-related features drive the syntactic derivation and the formation of the prosodic representation in compliance with the T-model of grammar. Based on the cartographic approach, this study proposes a model of the syntax–prosody interface in which the phonological computation of prosody is fed by syntactically encoded properties of information structure. However, this computation is also governed by structural requirements intrinsic to the phonological domain, and thus, a bijective relation between information structure and prosodic representation is not guaranteed. The monograph will be of interest to any linguist concerned with syntax, information structure, and prosody.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all those interested in the relationship between ideas and the built environment, John Onians provides a lively illustrated account of the range of meanings that Western culture has assigned to the Classical orders. Onians shows that during the 2,000 years from their first appearance in ancient Greece through their codification in Renaissance Italy, the orders--the columns and capitals known as Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and Composite--were made to serve expressive purposes, engaging the viewer in a continuing visual dialogue.
