Book excerpt: Under conditions in which visual cues were virtually eliminated, the box turtle (Terrapene c. carolina) responded to angular acceleration with a deviation of the head graded according to the intensity and duration of the stimulus. The head-turning continued throughout an acceleration and a subsequent deceleration served to return the head toward its normal central position. Habituation did not occur, nor could a vestibular ocular nystagmus be recorded. A similarity was found between the turtle head turning response and the slow phase of ocular nystagmus of cat and of man. (Author).

Book excerpt: Ocular nystagmus was recorded in darkness from cat and man during 4-deg/sq sec accelerations about an Earth-vertical axis. Lateral-canal stimulation yielded greater primary and secondary nystagmus than did vertical-canal stimulation. In cat, both lateral- and vertical-canal responses to a 36-second stimuli peaked after 15-21 seconds of angular acceleration, and this was followed by a steady decline. Declines during acceleration were not apparent in nystagmus of man. There was a more consistent secondary nystagmus in cat then in man. In cat, primary after-nystagmus was greater following an 8.4-second stimulus than following a 36-second stimulus. In man, a like difference occurred in the sensation but was not present in nystagmus. In this regard, nystagmus from cat resembled the subjective reactions of man more than they did the nystagmus of man. (Author).
