Book excerpt: The goals of the Symposium were to draw together researchers in turbulence and combustion so as to highlight advances and challenge the boundaries to our understanding of turbulent mixing and combus tion from both experimental and simulation perspectives; to facilitate cross-fertilization between leaders in these two fields. These goals were noted to be important given that turbulence itself is viewed as the last great problem in classical physics and the addition of chemical reaction amplifies the difficulties enormously. The papers that have been included here reflect the richness of our subject. Turbulence is rich and complex in its own right. And, its inner structure, hidden in the morass of scales, large and small, can dominate transport. Earlier IUTAM Symposia have considered this field, Eddy Structure Identification in Free Turbulent Flows, Bonnet and Glauser (eds) 1992 and Simulation and Identification of Organized Structures in Flows, Sorensen, Hopfinger and Aubry (eds) 1997. The combustion community is well served by its specialized events, most notable is the bi annual International Combustion Symposium, held under the auspices of the Combustion Institute. Mixing is often considered somewhere in between these two. This broad landscape was addressed in this Sym posium in a somewhat temporal linear fashion of increasing complexity. The lectures considered the many challenges posed by adding one ele ment to the base formed by others: turbulence and turbulent mixing in the absence of combustion through to turbulent mixing dominated by chemistry and combustion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combustion of fossil fuels remains a key technology for the foreseeable future. It is therefore important that we understand the mechanisms of combustion and, in particular, the role of turbulence within this process. Combustion always takes place within a turbulent flow field for two reasons: turbulence increases the mixing process and enhances combustion, but at the same time combustion releases heat which generates flow instability through buoyancy, thus enhancing the transition to turbulence. The four chapters of this book present a thorough introduction to the field of turbulent combustion. After an overview of modeling approaches, the three remaining chapters consider the three distinct cases of premixed, non-premixed, and partially premixed combustion, respectively. This book will be of value to researchers and students of engineering and applied mathematics by demonstrating the current theories of turbulent combustion within a unified presentation of the field.

Book excerpt: Turbulence, mixing and the mutual interaction of turbulence and chemistry continue to remain perplexing and impregnable in the fron tiers of fluid mechanics. The past ten years have brought enormous advances in computers and computational techniques on the one hand and in measurements and data processing on the other. The impact of such capabilities has led to a revolution both in the understanding of the structure of turbulence as well as in the predictive methods for application in technology. The early ideas on turbulence being an array of complicated phenomena and having some form of reasonably strong coherent struc ture have become well substantiated in recent experimental work. We are still at the very beginning of understanding all of the aspects of such coherence and of the possibilities of incorporating such structure into the analytical models for even those cases where the thin shear layer approximation may be valid. Nevertheless a distinguished body of "eddy chasers" has come into existence. The structure of mixing layers which has been studied for some years in terms of correlations and spectral analysis is also getting better understood. Both probability concepts such as intermittency and conditional sampling as well as the concept of large scale structure and the associated strain seem to indicate possibilities of distinguishing and synthesizing 'engulfment' and molecular mixing.

The effective mixing of entrained fluids to a molecular level is a vital part of the dynamics of turbulent flows, especially when combustion is involved. The work has shown the limitations of the steady-state simulations and acknowledged the need of applying high-fidelity unsteady methods for the calculation of flows with pronounced unsteadiness promoted by large-scale coherent structures or other sources.

Book excerpt: This report covers the work on gas-particle flow performed during the 1973-1974 contract period. Some previous work, which was published during this period, is briefly reviewed. The main effort was directed toward a study of gas-particle jets injected into a cross flow of clean gas. Photographs of the jets were obtained, and penetration of the jet centerline was correlated with the ratio of the momentum flux of the jet to that of the cross stream, and the distance from the injection point. The loading ratio (particle flow rate/gas flow rate) was 25 for these experiments. Results for lower loading ratios were obtained by a parallel study under different sponsorship. The results and their relationship to the few data available in the literature are discussed. A brief assessment is made for the mean free path for particle-particle collisions in two intersecting gas-particle jets. An extensive review of gas-particle flow was prepared with partial support by this contract, and plans for a future experimental study of a recirculating flow are outlined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work was completed on mixing, chemical-reaction, and combustion processes in turbulent, subsonic, and supersonic flows. Research included high-speed internal flows of interest to scramjet mixing and combustion, aimed at flow-control and flame holding issues. The control authority and mixing in subsonic and transonic flows affected by mass injection and heat release was quantified. In parallel, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with Sub-Grid Scale (SGS) modeling of these flows was conducted with codes verified against predictions of Linear Stability Analysis (LSA) theory. Research on hydrocarbon combustion was conducted on premixed methane-air, ethane-air, and (diluted) ethylene-air flames. Detailed measurements of flame extinction strain-rate and flame speed were obtained at different compositions at atmospheric pressure. Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of axisymmetric unsteady flows in both cold and chemically reacting impinging jets with full chemistry were also performed. Experimental investigations of the three-dimensional full-field structure of scalar dispersion fields in grid turbulence were initiated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implicit Large Eddy Simulation (ILES) with high-resolution and high-order computationalmodelling has been applied to flows with turbulent mixing and combustion. Due to the turbulent nature, mixing of fuel and air and the subsequent combustionstill remain challenging for computational fluid dynamics. However, recently ILES, anadvanced numerical approach in Large Eddy Simulation methods, has shown encouragingresults in prediction of turbulent flows. In this thesis the governing equationsfor single phase compressible flow were solved with an ILES approach using a finitevolume Godunov-type method without explicit modelling of the subgrid scales. Up toninth-order limiters were used to achieve high order spatial accuracy. When simulating non chemical reactive flows, the mean flow of a fuel burner was comparedwith the experimental results and showed good agreement in regions of strongturbulence and recirculation. The one dimensional kinetic energy spectrum was alsoexamined and an ideal k?5/3decay of energy could be seen in a certain range, whichincreased with grid resolution and order of the limiter. The cut-off wavenumbers arelarger than the estimated maximum wavenumbers on the grid, therefore, the numericaldissipation sufficiently accounted for the energy transportation between large andsmall eddies. The effect of density differences between fuel and air was investigatedfor a wide range of Atwood number. The mean flow showed that when fuel momentumfluxes are identical the flow structure and the velocity fields were unchanged byAtwood number except for near fuel jet regions. The results also show that the effectsof Atwood number on the flow structure can be described with a mixing parameter. In combustion flows simulation, a non filtered Arrhenius model was applied for thechemical source term, which corresponds to the case of the large chemical time scalecompared to the turbulent time scale. A methane and air shear flow simulation wasperformed and the methane reaction rate showed non zero values against all temperatureranges. Small reaction rates were observed in the low temperature range due tothe lack of subgrid scale modelling of the chemical source term. Simulation was alsoperformed with fast chemistry approach representing the case of the large turbulenttime scale compared to the chemical time scale. The mean flow of burner flames werecompared with experimental data and a fair agreement was observed.
