Book excerpt: The report discusses the progress which has been made tward the research goal of understanding the development and nature of turbulence generated from a source of free streaming energy within a collisionless plasma. The initial evolution of microturbulence, during which the electron drift energy is very efficiently converted to electron thermal energy and ion sloshing energy, is now largely understood. The authors have also developed a model of the late-time turbulence evolving in a driven toroidal confinement device. Several investigations have also been completed of the generation of plasma turbulence via the decay of large amplitude waves. Finally, the authors have initiated research on the feasibility of heating fusion plasmas via the injection of energetic beams of relativistic electrons. (Author).

Book excerpt: For a few seconds with large machines, scientists and engineers have now created the fusion power of the stars in the laboratory and at the same time find the rich range of complex turbulent electromagnetic waves that transport the plasma confinement systems. The turbulent transport mechanisms created in the laboratory are explained in detail in the second edition of 'Turbulent Transport in Magnetized Plasmas' by Professor Horton. The principles and properties of the major plasma confinement machines are explored with basic physics to the extent currently understood. For the observational laws that are not understood — the empirical confinement laws — offering challenges to the next generation of plasma students and researchers — are explained in detail. An example, is the confinement regime — called the 'I-mode' — currently a hot topic — is explored.Numerous important problems and puzzles for the next generation of plasma scientists are explained. There is growing demand for new simulation codes utilizing the massively parallel computers with MPI and GPU methods. When the 20 billion dollar ITER machine is tested in the 2020ies, new theories and faster/smarter computer simulations running in near real-time control systems will be used to control the burning hydrogen plasmas.

Laboratory studies of the plasma instabilities generated in microwave-plasma interactions have helped to understand the geophysical experiments. Microwave-plasma research has also been useful in modeling the interaction of lasers and plasmas, particularly in relation to efforts using pulsed lasers to compress and heat plasma to thermonuclear conditions. An experiment is described which investigates the evolution of the parametric instability which occurs with near resonant matching of the microwave frequency and plasma frequency. Near threshold, a finely detailed spectrum of satelite electron plasma waves is observed. These waves break down into a turbulent plasma condition with a marked change in power absorbed by the plasma. The plasma passes through several distinctive regimes of turbulent plasma conditions. At the highest power levels used, there are plasma waves hundreds of megacycles from the driving frequency. The plasma is found to absorb a significant amount of power and heat electrons to high energies. (Author).

Book excerpt: The results of a Lagrangian analysis of homogeneous plasma turbulence were used to justify the assumtion that trapped particle modes were instrumental in the turbulent heating of plasma, and a set of equations was derived which describes the behavior of individual waves of that type. In section 2 the usual probabilistic assumptions of homogeneous turbulence are applied to the basic equations of a Vlasov plasma. A simple mixing length approximation is used to achieve closure of the resulting set of equations. Section 3 contains some basic principles of Lagrangian plasma turbulence. In section 4 trapped particle modes are examined and the results of Bohm and Gross are extended so that the exact non-linear equations that govern them can be derived. (Author).

Book excerpt: Ever since the first observations of turbulent fluctuations in laboratory plasma experiments in the years around 1980, turbulence in magnetised plasmas has been a subject of vigorous interest in the field of plasma physics and magnetic confinement. The second of a two-volume set, this book begins with a review of the concepts behind magnetised plasma turbulence as covered in Volume One. After covering the effects of temperature dynamics, especially heat flux inertia, the rest of the first half reviews classical field theory in the necessary language, then builds the gyrokinetic and gyrofluid theory in a systematic and self-consistent manner, with special emphasis on energetic consistency. Gyrofluid turbulence in various flavours in a magnetised plasma is then covered, with control cases and energetic analysis. Familiar magnetohydrodynamic instabilities are reproduced in gyrofluid language, and then turbulence in a flow layer, current channel, pressure layer, or all three, is covered. A reprise of the theory in terms of a gauge transform with functional Lie-Poisson bracket structure closes the volume. Key Features Written by a world-leading expert in magnetised plasma turbulence Fills a long-standing gap in the plasma physics literature First unified book on gyrokinetic and gyrofluid theory and turbulence Includes complete derivations of the fundamental concepts

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the performance period on this contract, 30 June 1976, substantial progress has been made in our research on the interactions of high energy beams of charged particles. The mechanisms and efficiency of energy transfer have been investigated from relativistic electron beams to much denser, high-z target plasmas. Provided that the beam quality is sufficiently well controlled, optimization of the primary beam-plasma interaction, through selection of beam density and energy, should permit at least 15% of the beam energy to be deposited during a single pass in targets near 100,000 times as dense as the beam. Estimation of ionization and radiation processes indicate that a beam-heated plasma source of multi-kilojoule, multigigawatt radiation in the 10 - 10,000 eV portion of the photon energy spectrum may be achievable. More recently a number of calculations have been completed relevant to the development of collective ion accelerators. Required conditions have been determined for both equilibria and stability of powerful, unneutralized electron beams propagating along a magnetic guide field. Also studied were the collective ionelectron cyclotron interaction which can occur between a non-neutral ultra-relativistic electron beam and a less dense species of ions. Various regimes of this interaction have been investigated, and in one important regime for which the instability growth rate is less than the transverse bounce frequency of the ions in the radial electric field of the electron beam, two dimensional computer simulations have been performed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of solar wind turbulence from both the theoretical and observational perspective. It argues that the interplanetary medium offers the best opportunity to directly study turbulent fluctuations in collisionless plasmas. In fact, during expansion, the solar wind evolves towards a state characterized by large-amplitude fluctuations in all observed parameters, which resembles, at least at large scales, the well-known hydrodynamic turbulence. This text starts with historical references to past observations and experiments on turbulent flows. It then introduces the Navier-Stokes equations for a magnetized plasma whose low-frequency turbulence evolution is described within the framework of the MHD approximation. It also considers the scaling of plasma and magnetic field fluctuations and the study of nonlinear energy cascades within the same framework. It reports observations of turbulence in the ecliptic and at high latitude, treating Alfvénic and compressive fluctuations separately in order to explain the transport of mass, momentum and energy during the expansion. Further, existing models are compared with direct observations in the heliosphere. The problem of self-similar and anomalous fluctuations in the solar wind is then addressed using tools provided by dynamical system theory and discussed on the basis of available models and observations. The book highlights observations of Yaglom’s law in solar wind turbulence, which is one of the most important findings in fully developed turbulence and directly related to the long-lasting and still unsolved problem of solar wind plasma heating. Lastly, it includes a short chapter dedicated to the kinetic range of fluctuations, which has recently been receiving more attention from the space plasma community, since this is inherently related to turbulent energy dissipation and consequent plasma heating. It particularly focuses on the nature and role of the fluctuations populating this frequency range, and discusses several model predictions and recent observational findings in this context.
