An experimental investigation of the response of a pitot tube, a thermocouple and a sampling probe to a known periodic fluctuating flow with variable intensity of fluctuations is performed. The results indicate that the pitot tube response yields an adequate measure of the mean momentum flux in the incompressible range for any level of velocity fluctuation intensity in the direction of the probe axis. On the other hand, the thermocouple and sampling probe are found to be subject to significant errors in the measurement of mean temperature and mean concentration, respectively, in the high shear regions of a turbulent free jet. An experimental examination of the flow field of a turbulent axisymmetric free jet for non-homogeneous and non-isothermal conditions is performed. New probes are developed specifically for measuring these flux quantities. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science & Applications of Heat and Mass Transfer: Reports, Reviews, & Computer Programs, Volume 6: Turbulent Buoyant Jets and Plumes focuses on the formation, properties, characteristics, and reactions of turbulent jets and plumes. The selection first offers information on the mechanics of turbulent buoyant jets and plumes and turbulent buoyant jets in shallow fluid layers. Discussions focus on submerged buoyant jets into shallow fluid, horizontal surface or interface jets into shallow layers, fundamental considerations, and turbulent buoyant jets (forced plumes). The manuscript then examines a turbulence model for buoyant flows and its application to vertical buoyant jets, including mathematical model, calculation of vertical buoyant jets, and explanation of velocity and temperature spreading in pure jets and pure plumes. The publication is a dependable reference for scientists and readers interested in turbulent buoyant jets and plumes.

Book excerpt: In this book the author presents selected challenges of thermal-hydraulics modeling of two-phase flows in minichannels with change of phase. These encompass the common modeling of flow boiling and flow condensation using the same expression. Approaches to model these two respective cases show, however, that experimental data show different results to those obtained by methods of calculation of heat transfer coefficient for respective cases. Partially that can be devoted to the fact that there are non-adiabatic effects present in both types of phase change phenomena which modify the pressure drop due to friction, responsible for appropriate modelling. The modification of interface shear stresses between flow boiling and flow condensation in case of annular flow structure may be considered through incorporation of the so called blowing parameter, which differentiates between these two modes of heat transfer. On the other hand, in case of bubbly flows, the generation of bubbles also modifies the friction pressure drop by the influence of heat flux. Presented are also the results of a peculiar M-shape distribution of heat transfer coefficient specific to flow boiling in minichannels. Finally, some attention is devoted to mathematical modeling of dryout phenomena. A five equation model enabling determination of the dryout location is presented, where the mass balance equations for liquid film, droplets and gas are supplemented by momentum equations for liquid film and two-phase core.

This book was released on 1965 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent attempts to predict the heat transfer from a high enthalpy, compressible free jet impinging upon surfaces in its path have suffered from a complete lack of knowledge concerning the behavior of turbulent jets of dissociated gases. Although it had been assumed that high enthalpy gas streams would exhibit the characteristics of cold jets, which have been subjected to extensive study, there had been no experimental evidence to support this contention. A research program was conducted to determine radial and axial variations in fluid properties, i.e., velocity, density, enthalpy, etc., in compressible free jets of dissociated gases produced by electric-arc plasma generators. Experimental investigations were confined to the near flowfield of the jets, since 90 percent of change in jet fluid properties, from their initial values at the arc nozzle-exit plane to the properties of the ambient fluid, was accomplished within 40 nozzle radii from the jet origin. Heat-transfer rates from these jets, when impinging upon a flat surface perpendicular to the jet axis, were determined experimentally. Correlation of this data could then be accomplished by means of a relationship similar to those for stagnation-point heat transfer to blunt bodies in a uniform stream when local jet properties were employed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's first monograph on turbulent jets, in 1936, dealt solely with a free submerged jet. Since that time, the theory of the turbulent jet has been developed in many published works both in the USSR and abroad: it has been enriched with a large amount of experimental material and has been applied in many new fields of engineering. In the last 10 years very substantial progress has been made, and it has now become possible to go beyond the free submerged jet and to solve the problem of a jet in a stream of fluid, to take into account the interaction between the jet and solid walls, to ascertain the relationship between the contour of the jet and the ratio of its density to the density of the surrounding medium, and to establish the characteristic features of a supersonic jet. This monograph contains the results of further research by the author and his colleagues, as well as a critical reappraisal of the more important theoretical and experimental data published by other investigators. The first section deals with the theory of a turbulent jet of incompressible fluid. It gives a systematic analysis of numerous experimental data on velocity profiles, temperature, and the impurity concentration, as well as the outlines of the turbulent mixing lone. The second section sets forth the theory of turbulent gas jets, including strongly preheated and supersonic jets. The theory of free turbulence in a gas, suitable in principle for any degree of compressibility, is revised, and the equations are derived for motion and heat exchange in the boundary layer of a jet at very high temperature. The third section solves several problems of the spreading of jets in finite and semifinite space, and the fourth section describes various applications of the theory of jets, many of which are reported for the first time or have been significantly revised.
