Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes an integrated theory that links estuary shape to tidal hydraulics, tidal mixing and salt intrusion. The shape of an alluvial estuary is characterised by exponentially varying width and the absence of bottom slope. This topography is closely related to tidal parameters, hydraulic parameters and parameters that describe 1-dimensional mixing and salt intrusion. Starting from the fundamental equations for conservation of mass and momentum, analytical equations are derived that relate the topography to tidal parameters (tidal excursion, phase lag, tidal damping, tidal amplification), wave celerity, lateral and vertical mixing and salt intrusion. The book presents a review of the state of the art, a comprehensive theoretical background and ample case illustrations from all over the world. It provides tools with which human interference in estuary dynamics can be described and predicted, resulting from, for instance: upstream fresh water abstraction, dredging, climate change or sea-level rise. In describing the interactions between tide, topography, water quality and river discharge, it provides useful information for hydraulic engineers, morphologists, ecologists and people concerned with water quality in alluvial estuaries.Although the book can be used as a text book, it is mainly a monograph aimed at graduate students and researchers.* Provides new integrated theory for tidal hydraulics, tidal mixing and salt intrusion in alluvial estuaries* Presents a consistent set of analytical equations to compute tidal movement, tidal mixing and salt intrusion, derived from the fundamental laws of conservation of mass and momentum* Serves as a practical guide with many illustrations of applications in real estuaries

Book excerpt: The principle objective of this book is to review the biological characteristics of estuaries. The volume has been as a text for undergraduates and graduate students as well as reference for scientists conducting research on estuarine systems. And the rapid development of estuarine ecology as a field of scientific inquiry reflects a growing awareness of the immense societal importance of a coastal ecosystem. While the volume of literature on estuaries amassed, scientists deemed it necessary to synthesize the field periodically. Consiquently, several books have been produced in recent years which examine variuous aspects of the disicpline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-uniform flow is a flow in which the velocity at any given time changes from point to point along a streamline. In estuaries, such flows result from the cross-sectional area increasing in the downstream direction. A solution to the convective-diffusion equation for this type of estuary is obtained in terms of the estuarine geometry and the longitudinal diffusion coefficient. The model is applied to the results of two dye tracer experiments carried out in the upper Patuxent River during August 1969 from which the longitudinal dispersion coefficients were quantitated. The concept of a flushing velocity for an estuary is developed and defined. (Author).

Book excerpt: Proceedings of the First International Conference on Waste Disposal in the Marine Environment focuses on the disposal of sewage, including pollution of beaches, effects of wastes on marine biota and humans, and water quality. The selection first offers information on the fixed and changing valves in ocean disposal of sewage and wastes and characteristics and expeditious detection of bacterial indices of pollution of marine bathing beaches. Discussions focus on the coliform index and illness among bathers; enterococcus group as an index of pollution of saline bathing beaches; characteristics of the coliform group of bacteria; and procedures for expeditious determination of E. coli and coliform indices in water. The book then examines the risk of infection through bathing in sewage-polluted water; water pollution in Marseilles and its relation with flora and fauna; and the benthonic fauna of southern California in shallow depths and possible effects of wastes on the marine biota. The text examines the use of marine invertebrates as indicators of water quality; foraminiferal ecology around ocean outfalls off southern California; discharge of wastes into the sea in European coastal areas; and diffusion of sewage effluent in an ocean. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the effects of waste disposal in the marine environment.
