This thesis aims to examine the evolution of turbulence in the wake downstream the turbine. Wind tunnel experiments are carried out downstream a model turbine and a specially designed porous disc to investigate the influence of different turbulent inflows on the wake development. The data is analyzed with respect to common turbulent features using one and two point statistics. Five turbulence regions can be identified in the wakes. These regions are common for all experiments but differ in their locations. In the far wake of all cases a core region with universal properties of homogeneous isotropic turbulence is found. The results are independent on the inflow conditions, which is interpreted as the turbine imprinting its own turbulence onto the flow. engl.

Wind turbines, which convert the kinetic energy in wind into electrical power, are operated within stochastic environments. To account for the influence of environmental factors, we employ a conditional approach by modeling the expectation or distribution of response of interest, be it the structural load or power output, conditional on a set of environmental factors. Because of the different nature associated with the two types of responses, our methods also come in different forms, conducted through two studies. The first study presents a Bayesian parametric model for the purpose of estimating the extreme load on a wind turbine. The extreme load is the highest stress level that the turbine structure would experience during its service lifetime. A wind turbine should be designed to resist such a high load to avoid catastrophic structural failures. To assess the extreme load, turbine structural responses are evaluated by conducting field measurement campaigns or performing aeroelastic simulation studies. In general, data obtained in either case are not sufficient to represent various loading responses under all possible weather conditions. An appropriate extrapolation is necessary to characterize the structural loads in a turbine's service life. This study devises a Bayesian spline method for this extrapolation purpose and applies the method to three sets of load response data to estimate the corresponding extreme loads at the roots of the turbine blades. In the second study, we propose an additive multivariate kernel method as a new power curve model, which is able to incorporate a variety of environmental factors in addition to merely the wind speed. In the wind industry, a power curve refers to the functional relationship between the power output generated by a wind turbine and the wind speed at the time of power generation. Power curves are used in practice for a number of important tasks including predicting wind power production and assessing a turbine's energy production efficiency. Nevertheless, actual wind power data indicate that the power output is affected by more than just wind speed. Several other environmental factors, such as wind direction, air density, humidity, turbulence intensity, and wind shears, have potential impact. Yet, in industry practice, as well as in the literature, current power curve models primarily consider wind speed and, with comparatively less frequency, wind speed and direction. Our model provides, conditional on a given environmental condition, both the point estimation and density estimation of the power output. It is able to capture the nonlinear relationships between environmental factors and wind power output, as well as the high-order inter- action effects among some of the environmental factors. To illustrate the application of the new power curve model, we conduct case studies that demonstrate how the new method can help with quantifying the benefit of vortex generator installation, advising pitch control adjustment, and facilitating the diagnosis of faults. These equations are derived from R-S turbulence data which were measured at the vertical-plane array in Clayton, New Mexico. For validation, the equations are applied to the calculation of cyclic flapwise blade loads for the NASA/DOE Mod-2 2.5-MW experimental HAWT's (horizontal-axis wind turbines), and the results compared to measured cyclic loads. Good correlation is achieved, indicating that the R-S turbulence model developed in this study contains the characteristics of the wind which produce many of the fatigue loads sustained by wind turbines. Five turbulence characterization systems were assembled and installed at four sites in the Tehachapi Pass in California, and one in the Green Mountains near Manchester, Vermont. Data processing and analyses techniques were developed to allow observational analyses of the turbulent structure; this analysis complements the more traditional statistical and spectral analyses. Preliminary results of the observational analyses, in the rotating framework or a wind turbine blade, show that the turbulence at a site can have two major components: (1) engulfing eddies larger than the rotor, and (2) fluctuating shear due to eddies smaller than the rotor disk. Comparison of the time series depicting these quantities at two sites showed that the turbulence intensity (the commonly used descriptor of turbulence) did not adequately characterize the turbulence at these sites. 9 refs., 10 figs.

Book excerpt: In order to estimate wind turbine residL2;characteristics in the presence of atmospheric turbulence, the important atmospheric sources for the force excitations felt by the wind turbine system must be identified and characterized. The goal of this research is to develop the wind turbulence input model for horizontal axis wind turbines. The wind turbulence inputs are determined in three basic modeling steps. First, the turbulent velocity field is assumed to be stationary, locally homogeneous, isotropic, and satisfying Taylor's frozen field hypothesis. The Von Karman model is used to characterize the correlation between velocity components at different spatial positions and at different times. The procedure for finding the aerodynamic forces and moments which are caused by the turbulence, is complicated by the distribution of the turbulent velocity across each of the wind turbine blades. In the second step, the spatial variation of the turbulence is approximated by a few terms in a series expansion. Here, uniform terms across the rotor disk, gradient terms which vary linearly across the disk, and terms which vary quadratically across the disk are retained. All of these terms are time dependent. In the third step, the correlation of these turbulent velocity terms can be closely approximated by low order linear systems forced by white noise. The resulting turbulence input model is then validated using the forward square root information filter and the backward square root information smoother. The residuals between the model outputs and actual field tests are calculated and presented in terms of power spectral density functions.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we present a brief overview of our recent research results regarding the impact of organized or coherent inflow turbulence on the dynamic response of operating wind turbines. Previous field experimentation has demonstrated that the greatest structural fatigue damage tends to occur during the nighttime hours from coherent turbulence that develops in the stable, nocturnal atmosphericboundary layer. We have found that under such conditions, intense vertical wind shear and temperature gradients create resonant flow fields that are capable of imparting short-period loading and vibrational energy as wind turbine rotor blades pass through regions of organized or coherent turbulence. This energy is subsequently propagated throughout the remainder of the structure, where it isoften locally dissipated. We also briefly discuss our recent progress in developing a numerical simulation that includes such coherent inflow conditions that can be used to excite wind turbine design codes.
